Nebraska Uses Long Ball to Beat Iowa 79-73

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nebraska senior guard Brandon Richardson insists he’s much happier with assists than buckets. When the Huskers needed Richardson to be more selfish, he responded with the best offensive game of his career. Richardson scored a season-high 25 points on 6 of 7 shooting from 3-point range and Nebraska rallied to beat Iowa 79-73 Thursday night for the program’s first Big Ten road win. Bo Spencer added 16 for the Huskers (11-9, 3-6 Big Ten), who bounced back from an ugly loss to Ohio State with their third win in five games. Nebraska used a late 14-4 run to take a 70-65 lead with just under three minutes left. Three-pointers from Matt Gatens and Eric May brought the Hawkeyes within two, but Toney McCray hit two free throws with 27 seconds left and Iowa couldn’t answer against Nebraska’s defense, which made a late but effective switch to zone. The Hawkeyes allowed Nebraska to score 48 points in the second half, an ugly number given that the Huskers entered play averaging just 60.7 points a night. Zach McCabe matched a career high with 20 points for the Hawkeyes (11-10, 3-5), who led by as much as 11 in the first half. It was the first meeting in 36 years between the border-state schools, who will now see each other at least once a season. Iowa will always remember the reunion as the one it let get away.

Hooper Leads No. 19 Nebraska Women Over Iowa 60-53

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska had another bad shooting night — and another good outcome. Jordan Hooper recorded her Big Ten-leading ninth double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds, and the No. 19 Cornhuskers held off Iowa’s late comeback attempt for a 60-53 victory Thursday night. The Huskers posted season lows with their 32.1-percent shooting overall and 20-percent efficiency from 3-point range. But Iowa was even worse — 31 percent overall, 29 percent on 3s — and the Huskers had Hooper playing at her best. The Huskers have managed to win seven times this season when shooting under 40 percent. Lindsey Moore added 15 points for the Huskers (17-3, 6-2), who remain two games behind first-place Purdue in the conference race and one game back of Ohio State.Jaime Printy had 17 points, Kamille Wahlin 11 and Samantha Logic 10 for the Hawkeyes (11-10, 3-5). The Hawkeyes shot just 21 percent and committed 13 of their 20 turnovers in the first half. The Huskers struggled against Iowa’s zone defense in the second half, missing 10 shots in a row and turning the ball over five times during their 11-minute field-goal drought.

Illegal hunter in trouble again in Page County

Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer said Thursday, a Clarinda man cited last month for trespassing while hunting near Hepburn, and arrested five days later for illegally possessing a firearm, is in trouble again. The Sheriff says 29-year old Donald Ernest Runyon was arrested at around 2-p.m. Thursday, on a warrant charging him with two counts of Failure to appear on the original charge of Dominion / Control of Firearm / Offensive weapons by a person convicted of Domestic Abuse Assault. Runyon appeared before the magistrate, posted a $5,000 bond, and was released from custody.

The Iowa DNR had cited Runyon on December 17, 2011, for trespassing while hunting near Hepburn. He pleaded guilty January 4th and paid nearly $400 in fines and court costs. Five days later, he was arrested after officials realized he should not have had a gun in the first place. Runyon was once convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, which prohibits him from possessing firearms. A violation is a Class D felony. He was later released on a $5,000 cash bond.

WB I-80 Rest Stop to remain closed through Friday Between Adair & Casey

The Iowa Department of Transportation says the scheduled closure of the westbound Interstate 80 rest area, located between Adair and Casey at milepost 80, is being extended into Friday, Jan. 27th, to complete work underway at that location.  The facility had been scheduled to re-open today (Thursday), at 5-p.m.  The rest area is closed to allow two large cranes to install a 148-foot tall, vertical wind turbine blade.

The blade will essentially serve as sculpture, and will join several other pieces of art and plaques at the rest area that highlight Iowa’s wind energy industry. Last year, Iowa became the first state in the nation to generate at least 20 percent of its electricity from wind power. Iowa currently has nearly 2,900 wind turbines creating 4,500 megawatts of electricity.

JEROLD “JERRY” GAINES, SR, 76, of Atlantic died Wednesday, January 25th at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center.  Funeral services for Jerry Gaines will be held on Saturday, January 28th at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic.  Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Family visitation will be held on Friday from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.

WINGERT, 81, of Avoca died Wednesday, January 25th at the Avoca Nursing & Rehab Center.  Mass of Christian Burial for Anthony “Tony” Wingert will be held on Monday, January 30th at 10:30 am in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca.  Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home in Council Bluffs has the arrangements.
