Terry Peak reports second ski death

News

February 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LEAD, S.D. (AP) — Officials at Terry Peak resort in western South Dakota’s Black Hills say a second person died at the resort over the weekend. President and General Manager Tom Marsing says a 46-year-old man collapsed in the Nevada Gulch Day Lodge early Sunday afternoon and died on the scene. Authorities earlier said 24-year-old Tina Heilman, of Orange City, hit a ski lift tower Saturday as she was skiing down a beginner’s slope at the resort and died. Marsing says the woman was a novice skier and she wasn’t wearing a helmet.

A family friend says Heilman worked as a nurse in Sioux Falls. She was a graduate of Dordt College, a Christian college in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Free women’s health screenings offered in Cass County

News

February 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Cass County Health System and Cass County Home Care today (Monday) announced the availability of free women’s health screenings.  The screenings are made available through the Iowa Care for Yourself program and a grant from the Iowa Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  Screenings include mammograms, clinical breast exams, and pelvic exams with or without pap smears. Karla Akers, Care for Yourself Coordinator of Cass County Home Care, says “Regular preventive screenings help diagnose disease at an early stage. Every woman needs to take care of herself first—these screenings are an important part of taking care of yourself.”

Some age, income, and insurance guidelines apply, but Akers encourages women to call about availability.  Enrollment numbers are limited and services must be completed by the end of March.  Pat Markham, Cass County Memorial Hospital Administrator, says “Cass County Health System providers are available to offer screening appointments that will comply with the March 30 deadline.”

Women interested in accessing the women’s health screenings should contact Karla Akers at 712-243-7443.

Adair woman injured during accident east of Anita this morning

News

February 13th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says an Adair woman was injured during a single-vehicle accident this (Monday) morning. 21-year old Jennifer Jean Chrystine Flax was transported by Anita Rescue to the Cass County Memorial Hospital, following the accident which happened at around 8:45-a.m., about one-quarter of a mile east of Anita. Officials say Flax was traveling west on a snow covered White Pole Road (730thStreet), when her 2007 Chevy Uplander went out of control and entered a ditch, where it collided with a culvert. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $6,500.

The Sheriff’s Department reports also, a central Iowa man was arrested following an investigation into a non-injury, single-vehicle accident which occurred on Feb. 8th. 26-year old Kyle Christopher Goudeau, of Cambridge, was charged with OWI 1st Offense and Driving Under Suspension. The accident he was involved in took place at the intersection of 645thand Jasper Road. Goudeau was booked into the Cass County Jail but released later that same day on his own recognizance.
