Powerball Ticket Sold in Western IA worth $1-million

News

February 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Lottery say someone in Guthrie County bought a two-dollar Powerball ticket for Saturday’s drawing, that earned them a cool $1-million. The lottery says the ticket was purchased at a Casey’s convenience store in Guthrie Center. Officials say the lucky player matched the first five numbers in Saturday’s drawing but missed the Powerball. The entire $50 million jackpot went unclaimed. So far, no one has fessed up to owning the winning $1-million ticket. In January, the cost to play Powerball increased to $2 from $1. But the prize for matching the first five numbers increased to $1 million from $200,000, the lottery said. Saturday’s winning numbers were 23, 28, 50, 56, 59 and Powerball 5.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa senior Matt Gaten scored a career-high 30 points and Iowa beat No. 18 Indiana 78-66 on Sunday, snapping the Hoosiers’ three-game winning streak. Melsahn Basabe had 13 points for the Hawkeyes (14-13, 6-8 Big Ten), who beat the Hoosiers in Iowa City for the seventh time in eight tries. Iowa jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead and pushed it to 52-33 midway through the second half. Indiana closed to 10, but Gatens responded with four crucial 3s to guide the Hawkeyes to the easy victory. Freshman Cody Zeller had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Victor Oladipo added 15 points for Indiana (20-7, 8-7), which is now just a game over .500 in the Big Ten. Despite being just a game over .500, the Hawkeyes are now 3-3 against ranked opponents.

Cards’ Wainwright says he’s ready for heavy duty

JUPTER, Fla. (AP) – Adam Wainwright’s season-ending elbow injury last February was supposed to ruin the St. Louis Cardinals’ season. Now, the former 20-game winner is healthy again, ready to rejoin a rotation that was strong enough to win it all without him.  That’s a major reason why the Cardinals are optimistic at the opening of their first spring training without Albert Pujols, Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan in a very long time. Even if the 6-foot-7, 230-pound Wainwright throws fewer than 200 innings, the estimate the Cardinals have used in their desire to play it safe with a right-hander not yet a year removed from elbow reconstruction, they view it as a major plus. The 30-year-old Wainwright was a workhorse before getting hurt last spring, totaling 266 1-3 innings in 2009-10.

CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) – Officials are investigating a small plane crash in southwest Iowa that killed the pilot.  Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer says 53-year-old Jac Crain, of Clarinda, was killed in the crash that happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.  Crain’s BD-4 experimental, single-engine plane came to rest about 100 yards away from a farm house that’s about 2 miles southwest of Clarinda. The plane was registered to Crain Construction, Incorporated. It was manufactured in 2005.

Sheriff’s Officials couldn’t say Sunday evening if Crain had issued a distress call, or if there was any indication of engine failure prior to the crash. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration will work with local officials on Monday, to determine what caused the crash.

FAA records show the BD-4 Crain flew had a Lycoming engine capable of producing up to 200-horsepower.
