Taxing, spending agreements elusive at statehouse

News

February 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Fundamental disagreements over taxing and spending policies continue to divide the two political parties in the Iowa legislature — and the disputes threat to derail key initiatives. Iowa’s Republican governor is even at odds with his fellow Republicans on some key spending priorities, like a 25-million dollar state grant program for businesses that promise to expand in Iowa. House Speaker Kraig Paulsen of Hiawatha, the top Republican in the Iowa House, says that money is not included in the House G-O-P’s budget plan. “It’s not a hard no,” Paulsen says. “But we’re going to have to get some more detail on it.” Senate Democratic Leader Mike Gronstal suggests it’s not a new concept to set aside state tax money for direct grants to businesses.

“If you look at our state, over the last 30 years we have provided somewhere between $15 and $50 million every year for job creation,” Gronstal says, “though Democratic administrations, through Republican administration.” Gronstal says it would be a “disaster” to discontinue that program as House Republicans suggest. “While some might say we shouldn’t be engaged in that game, I think to unilaterally disarm…when 49 other states have those kind of programs, I think that is foolhardy,” Gronstal says. The top Republican in the House, meanwhile, is critical of Gronstal and his fellow Democrats for not considering the property tax reform plan House Republicans have crafted.

“Unquestionably there is tax relief in that bill for every single taxpayer in the state of Iowa,” Paulsen says. “Over $400 million for homeowners and you can try to slice it up any way you want, but at the end of the day, that’s just simple facts.” The Democratic leader in the Senate disputes those numbers and Paulsen says voters in November may have to decide which party has the right answer, as legislators may not be able to come to an agreement on property tax reform.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

ADEL, Iowa (AP) — A 24-year-old Iowa man is in custody in the shooting death of a 26-year-old man. Adel Police officers and the Dallas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting report around 11 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say Brandon Madren is jailed in Iowa’s Dallas County on suspicion of slaying Nathan Greene of Adel, who died at a hospital.

CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) — Officials are investigating a small plane crash in southwest Iowa that killed the pilot. Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer says 53-year-old Jac Crain of Clarinda was killed in the crash around 1:30 p.m. yesterday. The wreckage of Crain’s BD-4 plane came to rest about 100 yards away from a farm house about 2 miles southwest of Clarinda.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa lawmakers are unsure whether to support or oppose a proposed increase in the fuel tax. The tax, which stands at 21 cents a gallon, was last raised in 1989. A Senate panel has approved a 10-cent-per-gallon increase and a House panel has backed an 8 cent increase. It’s a difficult issue for lawmakers, especially Republicans, because powerful GOP groups have taken strongly opposing views on the issue.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa senior Matt Gaten scored a career-high 30 points and Iowa beat No. 18 Indiana 78-66 yesterday. Melsahn Basabe had 13 points for the Hawkeyes, who beat the Hoosiers in Iowa City for the seventh time in eight tries.

Powerball Ticket Sold in Western IA worth $1-million

News

February 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Lottery say someone in Guthrie County bought a two-dollar Powerball ticket for Saturday’s drawing, that earned them a cool $1-million. The lottery says the ticket was purchased at a Casey’s convenience store in Guthrie Center. Officials say the lucky player matched the first five numbers in Saturday’s drawing but missed the Powerball. The entire $50 million jackpot went unclaimed. So far, no one has fessed up to owning the winning $1-million ticket. In January, the cost to play Powerball increased to $2 from $1. But the prize for matching the first five numbers increased to $1 million from $200,000, the lottery said. Saturday’s winning numbers were 23, 28, 50, 56, 59 and Powerball 5.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa senior Matt Gaten scored a career-high 30 points and Iowa beat No. 18 Indiana 78-66 on Sunday, snapping the Hoosiers’ three-game winning streak. Melsahn Basabe had 13 points for the Hawkeyes (14-13, 6-8 Big Ten), who beat the Hoosiers in Iowa City for the seventh time in eight tries. Iowa jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead and pushed it to 52-33 midway through the second half. Indiana closed to 10, but Gatens responded with four crucial 3s to guide the Hawkeyes to the easy victory. Freshman Cody Zeller had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Victor Oladipo added 15 points for Indiana (20-7, 8-7), which is now just a game over .500 in the Big Ten. Despite being just a game over .500, the Hawkeyes are now 3-3 against ranked opponents.

Cards’ Wainwright says he’s ready for heavy duty

JUPTER, Fla. (AP) – Adam Wainwright’s season-ending elbow injury last February was supposed to ruin the St. Louis Cardinals’ season. Now, the former 20-game winner is healthy again, ready to rejoin a rotation that was strong enough to win it all without him.  That’s a major reason why the Cardinals are optimistic at the opening of their first spring training without Albert Pujols, Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan in a very long time. Even if the 6-foot-7, 230-pound Wainwright throws fewer than 200 innings, the estimate the Cardinals have used in their desire to play it safe with a right-hander not yet a year removed from elbow reconstruction, they view it as a major plus. The 30-year-old Wainwright was a workhorse before getting hurt last spring, totaling 266 1-3 innings in 2009-10.
