Iowa town hits snag in new water well

News

February 24th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MANSON, Iowa (AP) — The northwest Iowa town of Manson has hit a snag in digging a new water well in a crater left behind by huge meteorite that slammed into Earth 74 million years ago. Mayor Dave George told The Messenger in Fort Dodge that there’s a setback in an attempt to crack through the solid granite that’s blocking the new well due to collapsing shale. The shale will have to be cleaned out before the remaining 30 feet of granite can be cracked. George says when the well was dug last year, crews went through solid granite that had no cracks to allow the water through. The city hired a company to break the rock using a gas gun, but the shale moved during the process.

February 24th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa National Guard say they will host a rededication ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd, commemorating the completed renovation of the Shenandoah Readiness Center, at 601 Ferguson Road, in Shenandoah. Guard Public Affairs Officer, Colonel Greg Hapgood, says Iowa National Guard leadership and representatives from federal, state, and local governments will participate in the ceremony. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the rededication ceremony.

Originally constructed in 1956, the Shenandoah project includes a complete renovation of the existing facility (approximately 16,556 square feet), and the addition of approximately 2,760 square feet to the facility. The existing facility received upgraded finishes, energy-efficient heating-ventilation-air conditioning systems, lighting, and windows. All parking areas were paved and exterior landscape and drainage were improved. New entrances were also constructed to the south and west.

The $2.3 million project also includes a renovated Recruiter office, Family Support office, a new Iowa Communications Network classroom and a newly-remodeled kitchen. The restrooms were upgraded and remodeled in an earlier project completed in 2007.

The Shenandoah Readiness Center is home to Company B, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. 34th Infantry Division, Iowa Army National Guard. Approximately 50 Soldiers are based at the Shenandoah Readiness Center.

New Manager Not Worried About La Russa’s Shadow

Sports

February 24th, 2012 by Jim Field

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Mike Matheny fields the question that comes pretty much on a daily basis with the dexterity of the four-time Gold Glove catcher he used to be.

He insists there is no point trying to replace Tony La Russa. Just like there’s no point trying to replicate Albert Pujols’ bat.

What Matheny promises is he’ll work nonstop to keep the St. Louis Cardinals among baseball’s elite. He isn’t interested in comparisons with La Russa, who retired just a handful of wins away from being the second-winningest manager in history.

Matheny says he sees no sense of satisfaction with players who won the World Series last fall, noting that most reported well ahead of Friday’s first full-squad workout.
