3 juveniles killed; 3 others injured in an eastern Iowa crash today (Monday)

(Clinton County, Iowa) – A collision this (Monday) morning in eastern Iowa resulted in the deaths of three juveniles. Three other people were injured. The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened in the 3700 block of the outside lane of eastbound Highway 30, when a 1999 Jeep that was stopped in the lane for reasons unknown, was hit from behind by a 2023 Dodge 4500 pickup truck. The accident took place at around 9:20-a.m.

The impact caused the Jeep to be enter the south ditch, where it came to rest. The pickup came to rest on the south shoulder of the road.

Authorities say the three juveniles died from their injuries. None of them was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the pickup was transported by Clinton Fire to Mercy Hospital in Clinton. The driver of the Jeep, who was not wearing a seat belt. They were transported to helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. A passenger in the Jeep, who was not wearing a seat belt, was also transported to the UIHC.

No names have been released at this time. The crash remains under investigation.

The return of Payton Sandfort is a key as the Iowa Hawkeye men look to make a retun to the NCAA Tournament. Sandfort returns for his senior season after testing the NBA Draft. Sandfort averaged nearly 16 and a half points and more than six and a half rebounds as a junior.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says Sandfort is developing a complete game.

The Hawkeyes were 19-15 last season and played in the N-I-T. They were picked to finish 11th in the expanded Big Ten Conference.

The Hawkeyes open at home on Monday, November fourth against Texas A@M Commerce.

Northern Iowa’s Mark Farley on bouncing back from a loss to South Dakota State.

Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley may make a change at quarterback before Saturday’s game at fourth ranked South Dakota. Starter Aidan Dunne threw two interceptions in a 41-3 loss to top ranked South Dakota State. Matthew Schecklman was nine of 16 for 67 yards.

The Panthers had four turnovers and had a punt blocked against South Dakota State.

Farley says before moving on from a loss like that you have to grasp what went wrong.

Farley says you don’t just forget about a loss like that.

The Panthers are 2-3 overall.

JUDY WOOD, 72, of Greenfield, died Saturday, October 5, 2024. Funeral services for JUDY WOOD will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation at the Greenfield United Methodist Church is on Thursday, Oct. 10th, from 2-until 7-p.m., with the family greeting friends from 4-until 7-p.m.

Burial is in the Greenfield Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.

Memorials may be directed to the Judy Wood Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

JUDY WOOD is survived by:

Her husband – Larry Wood.

Her daughter – Sheila (David) Juhler,

Her son – Dallas Wood (& fiance’ Pamela Stokes), of Des Moines.

Her brother – David (Ronda) Shannon, and Bruce (Peggy) Shannon, all of Murray.

Her sister – Donna (Steve) Morey, of West Bend.

6 grandchildren, other relatives and dear friends.

2 UI Student-Athletes Depart Football Team

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Monday that two players have left the team and are planning to enter the transfer portal in December.

Senior running back Leshon Williams (Chicago/Richards HS) and junior wide receiver Kaleb Brown (Chicago/St. Rita HS/Ohio State) both informed Coach Ferentz of their plans on Monday.

“We thank both players for their contributions to the program and wish them the best as they move forward,” Ferentz said.

Williams competed in 32 career games as a Hawkeye, including limited action in three contests this fall.

Brown saw action in 14 games since last season, including limited action in three contests in 2024.

MADELINE MARIE “Mickey” HILEY, 96, of Griswold, died Saturday October 5, 2024, at Griswold Nursing and Rehab in Griswold. A Mass of Christian Burial for MADELINE HILEY will be held 10:30-a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold.  Rieken-Dune Funeral Home in Griswold has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the funeral mass, at the church.

A private interment will be at Pleasant Township Cemetery south of Griswold.

The second edition of the IHSAA’s 2024 football rankings are available below, with Ratings Percentage Index for Class 5A, Class 4A, and Class 3A now provided.

Current district standings are also available below for available classes.

Rankings for Class 2A, Class 1A, Class A, and Eight-Player will be determined throughout the 2024 regular season by official rankings committees, as debuted in 2023. The committee rankings for 2A, 1A, A, and 8P will feature a top 10 consensus-built list as compiled by a six-person group: Two former head coaches and one media member – each representing different state regions – and three IHSAA staff members. The IHSAA will use the rankings as a primary tool for postseason assignments, while maintaining school and geographic considerations.

Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is a formula instituted in 2018 using records to determine a team’s relative strength in a single regular season.

IOWA STATE-UCF TO KICK OFF AT 6:30 P.M.

AMES, Iowa – No. 11 Iowa State’s Oct. 19 game against UCF (3-2, 1-1) at Jack Trice Stadium will kick off at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on either FOX or FS1.

The Cyclones (5-0, 2-0) travel to West Virginia (3-2, 2-0) this weekend for another Big 12 tilt. The game will be at 7 p.m. (CT) on FOX.

SUE MARDESEN, 85, of Atlantic (& formerly of Elk Horn), died Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Funeral services for SUE MARDESEN will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 11am at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn. Ohde Funeral Home in Kimballton has the arrangements.

Friends may visit with the family from 10-a.m. until the time of service, Thursday, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.

Burial is in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.
