Creighton economist says Cornhusker fans will flock to Iowa when sports betting legalized

News, Sports

June 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A Creighton University economics professor predicts many Nebraska sports fan will start trekking to Iowa for game days because the state’s casinos will soon start taking bets on sporting events.  “It will move them over to Council Bluffs, there’s no doubt about that.”

Ernie Goss is co-author of a 2007 book titled “Governing Fortune: Casino Gambling in America.” Last June, the U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for states to legalize betting on sports. Officials say some time this summer, the rules will be in place and gamblers will be able to wager on sports inside one of the 19 casinos in Iowa.

They’ll also be able to sign up at one of the casinos for a sports betting app — letting them place bets from anywhere in Iowa. “Is it a wise move? It’s an inevitable move,” Goss says. “And we’re going to more and more to where we’re going to have parties at our houses where you don’t even have to go to the bar, you can sit in your house and bet at the same time.”

Goss made his comments during a weekend appearance on Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press” program. Goss has consistently argued casinos profit off habitual gamblers and that the industry’s benefit to the economy is “an illusion.” Goss released a report five years ago indicating states with casinos had lower economic growth than states that did not legalize casino gambling.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Iowa State have extended their annual football rivalry two more seasons through 2025. The Hawkeyes and Cyclones announced Monday that Iowa State will play in Iowa City in 2024, and the Hawkeyes will visit Ames the following year. Iowa and Iowa State have played each other since 1894, and have done so every year since 1977.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Darin Erstad has resigned as Nebraska’s baseball coach, saying he wants to spend more time with his family. Erstad’s announcement came a day after the Cornhuskers were eliminated from the NCAA Oklahoma City regional with a 16-1 loss to Connecticut. Athletic director Bill Moos said Erstad had earned the right to lead the program into the future but he understood Erstad’s reason for resigning.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Jesse Franklin had four hits and three RBIs to help Michigan beat Creighton 17-6 in the Corvallis regional. No. 3 seed Michigan wasn’t about to squander a 12-run lead.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues have won Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final and they will head back to Boston with the series tied 2-2. Ryan O’Reilly scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period for his second of the night and the Blues beat the Bruins 4-2. Game 5 is Thursday night in Boston.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles selected Oregon State switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft. The announcement at MLB Network studios marked the second time the Orioles led off the draft. They took LSU pitcher Ben McDonald in 1989.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kevin Sutherland birdied the second hole of a playoff with Scott Parel at Wakonda Club to win the Principal Charity Classic in the third-largest comeback in PGA Tour Champions history. Two months after outlasting Parel on the seventh extra hole in Mississippi in a Monday finish, Sutherland overcame an eight-shot deficit in the final round, making eight back-nine birdies in a course-record 10-under 62 to match Parel at 17-under 199. Parel closed with a 70.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright overcame a career-high seven walks to pitch eight shutout innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over Cole Hamels and the Chicago Cubs 2-1 for a three-game sweep. The Cardinals got just four hits in their fourth straight win. Chicago was limited to three hits, and lost for the sixth time in seven games.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Adrian Sampson struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings and earned his first major league win as a starter, leading the Texas Rangers over the Kansas City Royals 5-1. Texas won three of four in the series. The Royals ended a 1-6 trip that left them with a major league-worst 8-23 road record.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — When the Bruins go on the power play, it’s poetry in motion on the ice that comes from a combination of detailed coaching and planning, high-end talent and exquisite execution. Boston scored with precise efficiency on all four of its power-play chances in a 7-2 rout of the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 and is the biggest reason the Bruins lead the Stanley Cup Final 2-1 going into Game 4 Monday night.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Will Hanafan’s two-run single capped Creighton’s seven-run ninth inning and the No. 2 seed Bluejays beat Michigan 11-7 to avoid elimination in the NCAA Tournament’s Corvallis regional. The teams play again Monday, with the winner advancing to a super regional against the winner of the Los Angeles regional, national No. 1 seed UCLA or Loyola Marymount.
