Matheny Raring for Cardinals Opener

Sports

April 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) — Mike Matheny held a team meeting with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon, then emerged to take his first look around Marlins Park and announced he would be throwing batting practice. He’s trying to keep everything as simple as possible. Maybe that’s the right move for the rookie manager of the reigning World Series champions, who begin their defense of the crown today (Wednesday) against the newly renamed Miami Marlins. Matheny says he tried to learn something new every day during spring training, and that he has spoken to several people with managerial experience to pick their brains. And of course, he’s been in contact with Tony La Russa, who retired after last season — but is still a mentor of sorts for Matheny. You can hear the game this evening on KJAN, beginning at 5:10.

FOOD AND FARM-HIGH-PRICED HAM

Ag/Outdoor, News

April 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A traditional Easter dinner with ham as the main dish could stretch budgets as prices remain high heading into the holiday. Ham prices have been higher than usual for the past two years because the cost of pig feed has gone up. On the wholesale level, ham is selling for about 75 cents a pound this spring, which is in line with last year. But that price is well above the average 55 cents per pound price in the previous five years. Recent retail prices in grocery stores were around $2.20 per pound. Omaha shopper Paula Vejvoda (VAY’-veh-da) says she bought her Easter ham when they were on sale around Christmas and froze it to save money.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Northern Iowa assistant Ben Johnson is leaving the Panthers to join the staff of new Nebraska coach Tim Miles. Miles, who announced Johnson’s hiring Tuesday, already has said he would bring recruiting coordinator Ron Coleman and operations director Jayden Olson with him from Colorado State. Miles still has an opening for one full-time assistant. The 31-year-old Johnson was an assistant under Ben Jacobson at UNI for four years, serving as the Panthers’ recruiting coordinator this past season. Johnson previously spent two years as an assistant at Texas-Pan American and was a graduate assistant at Dayton. Johnson was a starting guard for four years at two Big Ten schools. He spent his first two seasons at Northwestern and finished at Minnesota.

Drake organizers announced Tuesday that Simpson and two-time U.S. outdoor 200-meter champion Wallace Spearmon, Jr., will compete in the meet, which is set for April 26-28. Marlins Open New Ballpark Against Champion Cards

Sports

April 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) – Perched atop the Miami Marlins’ colorful, provocative home-run sculpture is a blue marlin, poised for splashdown whenever the home team hits one out. Call the artwork what you will – gaudy, goofy, grotesque, great – but there’s no denying it’s new. For the Marlins, that’s what this season is all about. They’ve become a big-spending, attention-grabbing team as they open the season at home Wednesday night against the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins predict they’ll contend for the NL East title – and more. When ace Josh Johnson throws the first pitch in the new ballpark, the Marlins will begin trying to supplant the Cardinals, who mounted an improbable late-season charge to the World Series title.
