(Atlantic, Iowa) – Iowa Workforce Development announced that Cass Health received $849,240 in grant funding through Iowa’s Health Careers Registered Apprenticeship Program. With a goal of serving 70 apprentices, Cass Health has developed strategic workforce planning initiatives focusing on growing nursing careers including Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Nurses.

Over the past several months, Cass Health facilitated conversations with schools in Cass County, including Atlantic Community School District, CAM Community School District, and Griswold Community School District, as well as Iowa Western Community College (IWCC), to discuss the potential of developing a healthcare registered apprenticeship program for Cass County, focusing on the nursing pathway.

“Cass Health is committed to developing programs to grow our local talent pipeline by attracting, hiring, and employing the best and brightest healthcare professionals in our community. It’s very exciting to be at this point where now that we have this grant funding, which will complement our existing career pathways initiatives and allow us to finally begin a robust apprenticeship program to assist individuals towards their goal of a nursing career,” stated Chief Human Resources Officer Kolton Hewlett.

In addition to a high school-based apprenticeship program, the Cass Health apprenticeship program will also include an adult track for existing Cass Health employees and others in the community interested in pursuing a career in nursing. This program will provide an alternative pathway to health education, degrees, and certifications, including a combination of on-the-job learning and related training instruction traditionally taught in a classroom setting.

“We are committed to growing local talent while at the same time retaining as many of our apprenticeship participants as employees and residents of our rural service area after they complete their education,” said Hewlett.

The Iowa’s Health Careers Registered Apprenticeship Program was established in 2022 to help increase healthcare careers in the state. A total of $13.5 million was awarded to 21 programs to support 1,463 apprentices in nursing, EMT, behavioral health, substance abuse, and other key healthcare career fields.

More information about the application process for the Cass Health apprentice program will be announced this summer.

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic School Board will hold a Special Meeting 5:30-p.m. Wednesday, in the High School Media Center. The meeting will be shown on YouTube (viewing only) through a link found HERE.

On the agenda is discussion with regard to a Technology Update. Roger Warne will talk with the Board about: Cyber Security; the state of current technology; access controls; cameras and the role of technology personnel.

The Atlantic School Board will then act on approving the resignation of HS Night Custodian Mikade Thompson, and Contract Recommendations for:

• Lori Namanny, Melissa Balch and Tina Franken – Summer Food Service
• Deborah Hensel – SPED Bus Monitor
• Kerry Jepsen – Paraeducator/Summer School Voc Rehab, and
• Ashley Gacke – 5th Grade Science Teacher.

Other action items on the agenda include: 2023-24 Non-Union Contracts (Central Office, Technology & Directors). Superintendent Steve Barber is recommending a 5.91% increase for non-union hourly employees (including grounds workers), and a 4% increase for all Directors except for the Food Service Director, who will receive a $10,000 increase. Mr. Barber notes: “The Food Service Director [FSD] was originally hired as an “Interim” (position) in 2019-2020, “which resulted in a lower than average annual salary. In addition, when compared to the salary of other Director Positions in the district, the [FSD] salary is significantly lower than those salaries.” The increase, he said, “will be paid out of the Nutrition Fund, which will have no impact on the General Fund.”

The Atlantic School Board will also act on approving 2023-24 Principal Contracts amounting to $30,322.48 (a 4% increase), and 2023-24 Tentative Agreement/Master Contract with the Atlantic Education Association (representing the teachers). The agreement says “Effective July 1, 2023, each current employee’s base wage will increase by 4% from the employee’s 2022-23 base wage. (See the chart below for details). The Agreement also stipulates the parties agree to increase the generator by $1,000 to $46,650. (See the Supplemental Pay list, below).

And, the Board will act on approving a Pay Application to Trane U.S., Inc., for the HS Air Quality Project, in the amount of $19,437.50.

(Glenwood, Iowa) – A Council Bluffs man was arrested Sunday, in Glenwood. According to Glenwood Police, 25-year-old Zachary Shively was arrested for Violation of no contact order. He was being held without bond set until seen by a Magistrate Judge.

(Greenfield, Iowa) – The Adair County Sheriff’s Office is reporting five arrests from over the past week. Those arrested include:

• On April 16th, 26-year-old Luis Miguel Garcia Reyes, of Greenfield, for OWI/1st Offense. Reyes was later released on bond.
• On April 19th: 19-year-old Xachariah Mickale Hinson, of Greenfield, was arrested by Police in Fontanelle, and charged with Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree, and Stalking – 1st Offense, after Hinson allegedly broke and/or destroyed several windows at a residence not his own. Hinson was arrested also on April 20th by Adair County Deputies in Greenfield, on an Adair County warrant for: Theft in the 1st Degree; Eluding/Injury, OWI, Drugs or Participation in a Felony; Dominion/Control of a Firearm/Offensive Weapon by a Felon; & Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree. Hinson was being held in the Adair County Jail on a total bond amounting to $16,000; Also on the 19th, 39-year-old Trisha Jae Johnston, of Creston, was cited by Adair Police for Driving While Barred. She was released from a traffic stop with the citation.
• On April 20th, 37-year-old Kathryn Anne Mortensen Zimmerman, of Mount Ayr, was arrested in Adair County, on a Ringgold County warrant for False Report to [a] Public Entity, & Interference with Official Acts. She was being held on a $600 cash-only bond; 41-year-old Jesse Elvis Finley, of Essex, was arrested April 20th by Adair Police, for Reckless Driving and OWI/2nd Offense. He was later released on a $2,300 bond.
• And, 46-year-old Brandon James Corkrean, of Orient, was arrested April 21st, in Greenfield, for OWI/2nd Offense. He was later released on a $2,000 bond.

(Harlan, Iowa) – An arrestwarrant was served Friday, on a Shelby County man facing charges stemming from a September 22, 2022 fatal accident. According to court records, 50-year-old Robert Arkfeld, Jr., of Manilla, is charged with Homicide by Vehicle/OWI, a Class-B Felony. Arkfeld, Jr. was also charged with: Introducing intoxicants or drugs into a (correctional) institution – a Class-D Felony; Keeping a premises or vehicle for controlled substance; [Being a] Person ineligible to Carry Dangerous weapons, and Possession of a Controlled Substance/1st offense. He posted a $19,000 bond on the combined charges, and was released.

The Homicide by Vehicle charge follows an investigation into an accident on Highway 59 last Fall, that claimed the life of 33-year-old Timothy McFarland, of Emerson. The State Patrol has stated that a 2001 Harley Davidson, driven by McFarland, was traveling northbound on Highway 59 when a 2005 International tractor driven by Arkfeld attempted to pull out from a farm drive trying to turn south on Highway 59. The Tractor turned into the path of the motorcycle. The Patrol said McFarland couldn’t stop in time and collided with the front of the Tractor. Timothy McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.

(Radio Iowa) –  Governor Kim Reynolds says after getting key priorities like private school tuition assistance through the 2023 legislature, she plans to be front and center in the fight over abortion. “The overturning of Roe v Wade last year was just the beginning and since then we’ve seen some in our movement concede ground to abortion extremists,” Reynolds says. “Not in Iowa and not on my watch.”

Reynolds signed a law in 2018 to ban nearly all abortions after the sixth week of a pregnancy. While other states have recently enacted similar laws, Iowa’s law was ruled unconstitutional four years ago and Reynolds is asking the Iowa Supreme Court to overturn that opinion. “Earlier this month I attended oral arguments for the fetal heartbeat bill. While the left criticized my attendance, I wanted Iowans to know that I will always be front and center in this fight,” Reynolds says. “I will not rest until Iowa’s courts allow the will of the people to finally take effect, until every unborn child has that our Lord endowed upon us — life.”

Reynolds made her comments this weekend at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition Spring kick off event.  “There’s one more battle that I’ll never back down from,” Reynolds said, “the fight for the most important freedom of all, the freedom to be born, to grow up and to live up to the image God made us in.” Reynolds recorded her message to the conservative Christian group, an important part of the Iowa G-O-P coalition.

A spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee says Republicans are hellbent on banning abortion.

(Exira, Iowa) – The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton School District’s Board of Education met last week, and held a Public Hearing along with a presentation, with regard to the proposed 2023-24 School District Budget. After receiving no oral or written comments, the Board adjourned the Public Hearing and called to order their regular, monthly meeting. The meeting minutes were provided courtesy of Mallory Meyer, District Business Manager & Board Secretary/Treasurer.

During their regular session, the Exira-EHK School Board acted to pass the following:

• A Resolution authorizing the Redemption of General Obligation School Bonds, Series 2018, dated May 1, 2018, an amendment to an Escrow Agreement, and the Levying of a Tax for FY 2024 for the redemption of the G.O. Bonds mentioned.
• The 2023-24 Proposed Budget, as presented.
• 2023 Graduates (pending the meeting of graduation requirements).
• And they set the date and time for a 2022-23 Budget Amendment Public Hearing, as May 16, 2023, at 6-p.m.

In other business, the Board approved a bid of $40,188.30 for siding and roof construction project for the Exira Bus Barn, a FY2024-2026 Agreement of Services with Timberline Billing Service, LLC, and 2023-24 School-Based Interventionist Contracts with Green Hills AEA.

The following resignations were approved by the Exira-EHK School Board during their April 18th meeting: Jessica Allen, 5-12 Band Teacher; Jennie Irlbeck, Shared Administrative Asst.; Doug Newton, Boys Basketball & JH Boys Track Coach, and Paula Yates, Food Service.

They also approved two new hires: Christina Baggett – MS Special Education Teacher, and Andrea Schwery, TAG & Computer Science Teacher.
