IA Governor, lieutenant governor uninjured in deer/SUV collision

News

May 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The black Chevy Tahoe that ferries the governor and lieutenant governor around Iowa was damaged Wednesday in a deer-versus-vehicle crash. At the time of the wreck both Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds were riding in the S-U-V, which was being driven by a state trooper. Tim Albrecht, the governor’s press secretary, says the accident happened at about 1:40-p.m., on southbound Interstate 35.  “Governor Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Reynolds were traveling back from an event at Pine Lakes State Park in Eldora,” Albrecht says. ”

At mile marker 126.5 — just north of Story City — two deer crossed the path of the S.U.V. in which they were traveling. A third deer was struck by the S.U.V. and the vehicle sustained damage, but everybody’s o.k.” The deer was killed on impact according to Albrecht, and the trooper was able to drive away from the scene. “The SUV was still driveable. It did sustain quite a bit of damage on the driver’s side and the driver’s door is actually unable to be opened at this point,” Albrecht says. “The vehicle is fixable and it’ll be in the shop a few days we imagine.”

Iowa law requires the state’s governor to be driven by a state trooper. The law was passed over half a century ago after an Iowa governor who was driving himself was killed in a car wreck. Governor Bill Beardsley was killed on November 21, 1954, during his third term as governor. U.S. Senator Richard Louis Murphy of Dubuque, Iowa, was killed an a car wreck in Wisconsin in 1936.

Beltran Powers Cardinals to 12-3 Rout of Pirates

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran drove in a career-best seven runs with a pair of three-run home runs and RBI single in the first three innings, leading the way as the St. Louis Cardinals punished A.J. Burnett and the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-3 on Tuesday night. Rookie Lance Lynn (5-0) joined Steve Shields as the major leagues’ only five-game winners, allowing three hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings with six strikeouts to beat the Pirates for the second time in three starts. Lynn has a 1.61 ERA as the replacement starter for Chris Carpenter, sidelined indefinitely with nerve issues in his right shoulder. Burnett (1-2) entered with a 1.38 ERA but trailed 4-0 after six pitches. The right-hander surrendered 12 runs on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Rod Barajas and manager Clint Hurdle were ejected in the second inning of their game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Wednesday night. Barajas threw his mask after getting tossed by home plate umpire Angel Campos, apparently for arguing after a pitch from A.J. Burnett called a ball. The pitch came with none out, two on and the Pirates down 5-1. Hurdle apparently was tossed for protecting his player. It was the sixth ejection with the Pirates for Hurdle, in his second season with the team. Michael McKenry replaced Barajas at catcher for Pittsburgh, and the Cardinals scored two more runs for a 7-1 cushion.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A person with knowledge of the search says Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby has been offered the Big 12 commissioner job to replace the ousted Dan Beebe. The person confirmed Wednesday night that Bowlsby had received the offer after ESPN first reported the news. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the offer weren’t made public. Bowlsby is a nationally respected college administrator in his sixth full season at Stanford. He was hired away from Iowa in 2006, following 15 years running the Hawkeyes’ athletic department. Stanford’s rigorous academic standards present unique circumstances, and Bowlsby has shined and helped oversee the transformation of the football program back into a national power. Beebe was fired in September 2011 and replaced on an interim basis by Chuck Neinas.
