UNDATED (AP) — NASCAR has suspended truck driver Johnny Sauter for one race for intentionally ramming into Austin Hill during the race at Iowa. The sport’s sanctioning body announced that Sauter will be kept out of the next race outside of St. Louis for his actions. But Sauter’s postseason eligibility will not be affected.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa junior A.J. Epenesa knows he has a strong shot at being picked in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft should he choose to go pro next spring. He’s choosing not to think about it until then. Epenesa, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive end who led the Big Ten with 10 1-2 sacks a year ago despite coming off the bench, is poised for a monster season in 2019.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Louisville-Auburn game at the College World Series will resume Wednesday after being suspended after the fourth inning because of rain. The Cardinals led Auburn 4-1 when the TD Ameritrade Park grounds crew rolled the tarp over the field. The Vanderbilt-Mississippi State game scheduled for Tuesday night and regularly scheduled game between Texas Tech and Florida State will follow.

SEATTLE (AP) — Whit Merrifield had two homers and a career-high six RBIs, Homer Bailey pitched into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 9-0. The Royals jumped on struggling starter Yusei Kikuchi to get their third straight win. Kikuchi allowed six runs in five innings. Merrifield drove a three-run homer against Kikuchi in the fourth and added a two-run shot against Jesse Biddle in the eighth. Jorge Soler also homered for the Royals, and rookie Nicky Lopez had three hits.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Jordan Yamamoto dazzled again, matching his first career start by pitching seven scoreless innings against St. Louis, and the Miami Marlins beat the Cardinals 6-0. Yamamoto allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. He gave up three hits in seven innings in his major league debut, on June 12 in Miami against the Cardinals. Before that game, he had not pitched above Double-A. Relievers Tayron Guerrero and Sergio Romo completed the two-hitter.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State has dismissed forward Teddy Allen after he was arrested following a disturbance at a woman’s home. Athletic director Darron Boatright says he and Coach Gregg Marshall wished Allen well but decided his dismissal was best for the basketball program. The West Virginia transfer was arrested last week after a woman accused him of causing a disturbance at her home. He was later charged with domestic violence property crime and petty theft, both misdemeanors.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dexter Fowler and Matt Carpenter homered to back a strong outing by Miles Mikolas and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-0 win over the Miami Marlins. Mikolas (5-7) snapped a career-high losing streak of five straight decisions.

SEATTLE (AP) — Jorge Soler hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning off Anthony Bass, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 6-4 win over Seattle, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Mariners. After the Royals were shut down for most of the night by Tommy Milone, Soler hit a 1-1 pitch on the outside corner out to deep right-center field for his 19th home run of the season. Martin Maldonado added a solo home run in the ninth.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Henry limited Florida State to three hits and Jesse Franklin’s first-inning home run stood up in Michigan’s 2-0 win at the College World Series. Bluder announces staff changes for Iowa women’s hoops

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder announced several staff changes on Friday. Abby Stamp has been promoted to interim assistant coach, Kathryn Reynolds has been promoted to director of player development, while associate head coach Jenni Fitzgerald will now serve as a special assistant to the head coach.

The search for a new director of operations is ongoing.

“I am excited to add a new position to our staff and find a different role for Jenni to assist our program,” Bluder said.  “With the change, we have found a way for Jenni to take a step back but keep her expertise within our program.

“I am excited to have Abby begin her journey as an assistant coach.  She is a loyal Hawkeye and has a very talented basketball mind.”

Fitzgerald, a native of Long Grove, Iowa, completed her 19th season on the Iowa sidelines in 2019. She has helped the Hawkeyes to 18 postseason appearances, including 13 NCAA Tournament berths and an Elite Eight appearance in 2019.

Under Fitzgerald, Iowa perimeter players have garnered numerous awards. She has coached 14 players to a total of 31 All-Big Ten honors, including 11 first team selections. She has mentored six all-district honorees, one All-American, and four honorable mention All-Americans.

Fitzgerald has coached four WNBA draft picks, including three athletes that made WNBA rosters. Sam Logic was a first round selection in 2015 (10th overall, Atlanta Dream).

“After being in Division I basketball for the past 33 years – four as a player and 29 as a coach – I have decided it is time to take a step back from coaching and assume a different role within our basketball program,” said Fitzgerald.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to coach so many wonderful players over the past 29 years, and I don’t know if I can truly put into words how much coaching at the University of Iowa has meant to me. The coaches, players, administration, support staff, and fans are the best in the country. I’m excited to take on this new role within our basketball program and help keep Iowa women’s basketball moving forward.”

Stamp completed her 10th season with the Iowa women’s basketball program in 2019. After spending eight seasons as Iowa’s director of operations, Stamp was promoted to director of player development in 2017. Stamp was also a member of the Iowa women’s basketball team from 2005-08.

Over the last 10 years, Stamp has worked closely with Iowa student-athletes, helping them develop into strong leaders and role models in the Iowa City community. She has also assisted the basketball staff in day-to-day activities of the program, and served as Iowa’s chief scheduler – building one of the most exciting and demanding schedules in the country.

Reynolds completed her second season as director of basketball operations in 2019. During the past two years, she has worked closely with the Hawkeye basketball staff, coordinating and carrying out day-to-day activities of the program. She was responsible for arranging team travel, supervising public service opportunities, and coordinating summer camps and training tables.

Reynolds was a member of the Iowa women’s basketball team from 2011-15. The 2015 co-captain played a pivotal role in Iowa’s 2015 Sweet Sixteen run.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR overturned a victory for the first time since 1960 when Brett Moffitt was declared the winner of the Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway after Ross Chastain’s No. 44 truck failed a post-race inspection. Chastain led the final 141 laps of the 200-lap race. But series managing director Brad Moran said that the No. 44 was too low when it was measured with NASCAR’s height sticks. NASCAR put strict new rules into place at the start of this season to deter cheating.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Christopher Bell won the NASCAR Xfinity series race at the Iowa Speedway, his fourth victory of the season and his second straight in Newton. Bell led 186 of 250 laps to claim his second short track win of 2019 by nearly two seconds. Bell also won at Bristol in April.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Austin Martin homered on Reid Detmers’ first pitch of the game and he went deep again in the seventh to break a tie in Vanderbilt’s 3-1 victory over Louisville on Sunday in the College World Series. Drake Fellows came off a poor outing in the super regionals to pitch seven strong innings and help No. 2 national seed Vanderbilt (55-11) set a program record for wins and improve to 4-0 in its CWS openers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Paul DeJong tagged the Mets again, hitting a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning that sent the St. Louis Cardinals over New York 4-3. The Cardinals won despite getting outhit 10-3. They took three of four in the series, and DeJong homered in each victory.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Martín Maldonado celebrated Father’s Day by wearing a blue necktie on his chest protector and had three hits to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins 8-6. Maldonado had several names scribbled on the tie, along with “Happy Father’s Day.” Pittsburgh Pirates backstop Elias Diaz wore the same tie in a game against Atlanta, which appeared to be provided by equipment manufacturer All-Star.
