ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brandon Beachy pitched six innings of one-run ball and helped himself with an RBI single, Michael Bourn added a solo homer and the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 Saturday night. Beachy (4-1) allowed only two singles and lowered his ERA to 1.60, fifth best in the NL. He struck out six and walked four. Bourn went 3 for 6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and the homer was his first since Aug. 19, 2011, against Arizona. Atlanta did most of its damage against Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (2-4). Wainwright had won all six career starts he’d made against his former team, but he lasted just 4 1-3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, with five walks and five strikeouts. The Cards and the Braves face off again Sunday afternoon, beginning at 12:20, on AM 1220 KJAN.

KINGSLEY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa high school senior who took a cardboard cutout of Tim Tebow to her prom at Kingsley-Pierson High School has received a signed jersey from the NFL quarterback. Rachel Bird decided the Tebow cutout was a better date than no date for last month’s prom. FRS, an energy drink company Tebow endorses, heard about Bird’s “date.” Bird told The Sioux City Journal  that the company emailed her and said a signed Tebow jersey was on the way. It arrived on Friday. Bird says she was surprised by all the attention but is focusing on a more important task. She has a speech to deliver on Sunday as the valedictorian for her class of 28 students.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Carlos Marmol on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured hamstring. The Cubs made the move Saturday and called up righty Casey Coleman from Triple-A Iowa. Marmol was hurt Friday night while pitching during the seventh inning in a game against Milwaukee. He returned to Chicago to have an MRI, which revealed the injury. Marmol is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA in 15 games this season. “He was really sore when he was walking out last night and it seemed to actually be getting worse,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. Coleman was 2-3 with a 3.48 ERA in seven appearances at Iowa, including six starts. He is expected in Milwaukee on Saturday, but not in time for the first pitch against the Brewers.
