“Click it or ticket” mobilization effort begins Monday

News

May 20th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

If you were traveling on Interstate 80 in western Iowa this (Sunday) afternoon, you noticed a heavy presence of State Troopers, many of them in unmarked vehicles. That was just a prelude to a national “Click it or Ticket” seat belt enforcement mobilization which officially begins Monday (May 21st). In Iowa, city, county and state law enforcement officers are teaming up with highway safety advocates across the country, to help save more lives by enforcing seat belt laws around the clock.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows in 2010, 61-percent of the 10, 647 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes which occurred between 6-p.m. and 6-a.m., were not wearing their seat belts. The daytime, unbelted traffic fatality rate is 42-percent. In 2011, there were 360 motorists killed in crashes on Iowa’s roadways. And, while that was a 66-year low, 115 of those deaths involved vehicle occupants who were not wearing their seat belts.  Iowa’s mandatory seat belt law has been in effect for nearly 26-years.

This year’s “Click it or Ticket” enforcement effort runs May 21st through June 3rd.

Lamberti arrested on suspicion of DUI in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Republican Senate leader Jeff Lamberti has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. A police report cited by the Des Moines Register says the 49-year-old Lamberti, of Ankeny, was stopped on Interstate 235 in Des Moines about 10 p.m. Friday for weaving. Police say Lamberti told the officer he was texting and earlier had two beers — a number he later changed to four and then six. Police say the officer found a cup and near-empty bottle of whiskey in the car. Police say two tests showed Lamberti had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit. Lamberti told the newspaper he made a “stupid mistake” that will never happen again. Lamberti is president of the Iowa Barnstormers, part of the Arena Football League. He served in the Iowa Senate from 1995 to 2006 and ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell in 2006..

PERRY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are looking for a man suspected in the attempted abduction of three girls on the west side of Perry. Perry police say the man stopped his car about 8 p.m. Friday and asked the girls, ages 8 and 9, for directions to a convenience store. He then tried to get the girls into the car, asking for them to show him the way. Police say that when the girls refused, the man made a lewd comment and pointed at his crotch. The girls ran to a neighbor’s house.

Corning’s Caitlyn Stroud Wins 100M and 200M

Sports

May 19th, 2012 by admin

Caitlyn Stroud of Corning fought through injuries to win the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash State Titles in Class 1A Girls competition at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.  Stroud ran a time of 12.75 to win the 100 Meter dash then promptly went to the infield to put a boot back on her left foot.

Stroud followed up that gutty performance with another great run to win the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 22.16.  Immediately after winning the race Stroud went to her knees in obvious pain and holding the small of her back.  She walked off under her own power fine and appeared to be recovering well but it was a pretty gutty performance for Stroud in both races.
