Powerful storm strikes Sioux County over the weekend

 HULL, Iowa (AP) – Many in northwest Iowa spent Monday cleaning up after a severe thunderstorm hit Sioux County.  The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says trees, branches and power lines were knocked down during the storm as it passed over Hull, Hawarden and Boyden on Sunday night.  The Sioux City Journal reports several homes were hit by downed trees but that no injuries were reported. Officials say wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour were also reported and some residents lost power for about three hours.

Audubon City Council to vote on budget amendment tonight

A public hearing is set for this evening in Audubon, with regard to an amendment to the 2011-2012 Budget. The hearing will take place during the City Council’s regular session, which begins at 7-p.m. The amendment is being made necessary, after receipts in the general fund turned out to be higher than expected. Following the public hearing, the Council will act on a resolution approving the budget amendment.

In other business, the Audubon City Council will hold a separate public hearing on the sale of the vacated portion of an alley in Lot 14 of the west Audubon addition, followed by action on a resolution to proceed with the sale.

Adair County Board to hold budget talks with Sheriff

The Adair County Board of Supervisors will discuss budget matters when they hear from Sheriff Brad Newton this morning, during their meeting at the courthouse in Greenfield. Other matters to come before the board for their 9-a.m. session, include a report from County Conservation Director Kevin Blazek, on wages and status…and a report from County Recorder Janelle Schneider, with regard to a copier lease agreement

At 10-a.m., the Supervisors will move from their Board Room to the Adair County Public Safety Center Meeting Room, where they will hear from ISU Professor Carlton Basmajian,who will discuss a Comprehensive Plan, and, the V.A. Administrator, about matters pertaining to that office.

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (AP) — Volunteer firefighters in Mount Vernon celebrated the opening of a new firehouse yesterday, replacing its aging headquarters. The $2 million building replaces the department’s downtown location, which opened in 1967. The new building was mostly paid for by the city of Mount Vernon.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A California man has been killed in motorcycle accident in Marshalltown. The Iowa State Patrol says 24-year-old Ryan Viramontes of Norwalk, California was speeding Sunday night when he lost control and hit a guard railing. The fatal accident happened just before midnight.

ATLANTIC, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in Adair County say a toddler has died after a tree fell on him. Fontanelle’s police chief says 3-year old Nathan Hutt was playing in a yard on Sunday when a large tree blew over. Funeral services for Hutt are currently pending.

Montgomery County Teen in Car-Deer Accident Saturday

No injuries were reported following a car-verus-deer collision over the weekend, in Montgomery County. Sheriff’s officials said Monday, the accident happened at around 10:20-pm, Saturday.  Authorities report a 2004 Dodge Stratus owned and driven by 19-year-old Bradey Melvin Telschow, of Red Oak, hit a deer while traveling east on 150th Street, about one-half mile west of F Avenue.  The car sustained approximately $6,500 damage. No citations were issued.

Descalso hits HR, Cards beat reeling Braves, 8-2

ATLANTA (AP) – Lance Lynn joined Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels as the major leagues’ first eight-game winners, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ extended the Atlanta Braves’ longest losing streak in two years to eight games with an 8-2 victory Monday.  Lynn (8-1) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. While he was dominating the Braves, Hamels pitched the Phillies to an 8-4 win at the Mets.  Atlanta is on its worst skid since the Braves lost nine in a row from April 21-29, 2010. The Braves have given up seven runs or more in four straight games. Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer as a fill-in starter at third base for David Freese, who was given a day off with a mild sprain of his right hand. The Cards and the Braves face off again Tuesday. Pre-game on KJAN is at 5:15, with the first pitch at around 6:10.

GERALD ESSLINGER, 85, of Bayard, died Mon., May 28th, at the Guthrie County Hospital. Graveside services for GERALD ESSLINGER will be held 11-a.m. Sat., June 2nd, at the Highland Township Cemetery, south of Bayard. Ohde Funeral Home in Bayard has the arrangements.

Friends may gather at Noon Saturday for lunch, at the Bayard Community Center building.

His son – Randy Esslinger, of Bayard.

His daughter – Diane Groth, of Perry.

3 grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren.
