Gymnast Shawn Johnson ends comeback, retires

Sports

June 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

(AP) — Shawn Johnson is calling it a career, ending her attempts at making a second Olympic team because of a lingering knee injury.  The Olympic gold medalist and 2007 world champion announced her retirement Sunday, four days before the start of the U.S. gymnastics championships. Johnson says her left knee, injured in a January 2010 ski accident, continued to slow her down, and she worried about the long-term damage if she kept competing.

The 20-year-old from West Des Moines, Iowa, was one of the biggest stars at the Beijing Olympics. Along with her gold on balance beam, she won silvers in the all-around, team competition and floor exercise. At the 2007 world championships, Johnson won the all-around, led the Americans to their third team title and took gold on floor.

No injuries reported following rollover accident

News

June 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a woman and her two children escaped injury following a rollover accident Friday afternoon, southeast of Stanton. Official say 28-year old Erin Nicole Johnson, of Villisca, was turning north onto Q Avenue from 250th Street at around 4:15-p.m. Friday, when she lost sight of the road due to dust created by another vehicle.

When the  2012 Dodge Durango she was driving got too close to the shoulder, the loose gravel pulled the SUV into the east ditch, causing it to roll over onto its top. Johnson refused treatment for herself and the children, but the trio were later transported to the Clarinda Regional Hospital to be checked out. The Durango, registered to 31-year old Lane Richard Johnson, of  Villisca, was a total loss.

(Update) New Omaha superintendent resigns over emails

News

June 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha school board has accepted the resignation of the incoming superintendent. The board voted 9-1 at a special meeting convened Saturday afternoon to accept Nancy Sebring’s letter of resignation. The vote came amid media reports that the discovery of sexual emails Sebring exchanged with her lover hastened her departure from a similar job in Iowa. Sebring was to assume the superintendent’s position on July 1. She abruptly resigned as superintendent of the Des Moines school system last month, saying she needed to attend to family matters ahead of her move. Sebring now acknowledges she stepped down earlier than expected after emails she exchanged with her lover using her district account were discovered.
