KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Beltran spent time chatting with some old friends Friday night and reminiscing about his days playing for the Kansas City Royals. Then he made everyone at Kauffman Stadium remember what he looked like as a youngster. Beltran hit two-run doubles his first two times at the plate, leading a St. Louis Cardinals offense that matched a season high with 17 hits to an 11-4 victory over their I-70 rivals. David Freese and Tyler Greene added two RBIs each for St. Louis, and everybody in the starting lineup had a hit before the fourth inning ended. Jon Jay returned from the disabled list to go 1 for 5 and score twice, and Matt Carpenter came off the DL to go 2 for 4 with an RBI.

In other game notes:  The Royals optioned Tommy Hottovy to Triple-A Omaha;  St. Louis optioned Outfielder Adron Chambers and 1st baseman Matt Adams to Triple-A Memphis;  The Cardinals have won nine of their last 12 in Kansas City; Freese and Holliday both reached base four times; Royals relievers lead the major leagues with 268 1-3 innings pitched this season; Adam Wainwright starts today (Saturday) for St. Louis. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyler Webb and Matt Price combined for seven innings of shutout relief, and two-time defending national champion South Carolina returned to the College World Series finals with a 3-2 win over Arkansas on Friday night. The Gamecocks (49-18) took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on Barrett Astin’s two-out, bases-loaded walk to Adam Matthews. South Carolina will play Arizona in the best-of-three finals beginning Sunday. The Gamecocks erased a 2-0 deficit in the fifth, with DJ Baxendale walking Christian Walker with the bases loaded to force in the tying run. Matthews looked ready to swing on a 3-2 pitch from Astin in the seventh, but he held up as the slider dropped low and Joey Pankake trotted home for the going-ahead run. Price (5-4) pitched three innings to earn his record fifth career win in the CWS. Colby Suggs (7-1) took the loss for Arkansas (46-22).

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Dario Franchitti won the third of the first three qualifying heat races in the history of the current IndyCar series Friday to take the pole for tonight’s (Saturday’s) Iowa Corn Indy 250. Franchitti, the Indianapolis 500 winner, has two victories in four starts on Iowa’s short oval. Helio Castroneves will start on the front row with Franchitti, followed by 2011 winner Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe. The starting grid was set by three 30-lap heat races seeded according to practice times. The eight fastest in the last practice competed in the final heat, which set the first four rows for the Saturday night race. The opening two heats seeded the rest of the starting grid.
