News

July 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A dozen Union Pacific employees will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange today (Monday), to celebrate the railroad’s 150th birthday. The nation’s largest railroad will also celebrate at its Omaha headquarters on Monday with a bell-ringing reception for its employees. Union Pacific is holding a number of events in 2012 to commemorate the day when President Abraham Lincoln signed the law creating the railroad on July 1st, 1862. The only problem with today’s celebration, is that it is happening one day after the actual anniversary. Union Pacific had to adjust its plans because July 1st falls on a Sunday this year.Union Pacific started laying rail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked westward to meet the Central Pacific railroad. The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Allen Craig homered for the second time in three days and All-Star Yadier Molina also connected as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 5-4 on Sunday.  St. Louis avoided getting swept in a three-game series at home by Pittsburgh for the first time since 1991. Jason Motte got the last four outs for his 17th save in 21 chances to end the Pirates’ four-game winning streak. Motte was the last in a flurry of moves by rookie manager Mike Matheny that left three players seeing time at two positions.  Michael McKenry’s three-run homer capped a four-run fourth that put the Pirates ahead for the first time and also gave them a homer in nine straight games. They’ve totaled 15 homers in their longest streak since another nine-gamer in June 2008.  Next up for the Cards is the Colorado Rockies. Catch the action Monday, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:20-p.m. on KJAN. The 1st pitch is at 7:15-p.m.
