Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched an eight-hitter and Tyler O’Neill hit a pair of two-run homers, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the first complete game this season and second overall for Mikolas, who lasted just four innings in his last start before the All-Star game. It was first complete game by a Cardinals pitcher this season. Mikolas had the only one last year on May 21 against Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jakob Junis struck out a career-high 10 and Nicky Lopez drove in a pair of runs and scored twice as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2. The Royals beat Lucas Giolito for the first time and thwarted his bid for a 12th victory.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have acquired catcher Martin Maldonado in a trade with Kansas City that sent left-hander Mike Montgomery to the Royals. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein announced the deal following Chicago’s 6-3 loss to Cincinnati _ adding that All-Star catcher Willson Contreras was going on the 10-day injured list with a strain to the arch area of his right foot.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kansas coach Les Miles figures he’s back where he belongs, on the sideline after 2½ years away from coaching. The national championship winner at LSU has a rebuilding job similar to the last time he was in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State 18 years ago. Miles led the Cowboys to bowl games the last three of his four seasons there. He was fired at LSU midseason in 2016 with a 114-34 record. Now Miles is trying to lift a woebegone program with an 18-90 record since 2010.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma has won four Big 12 titles in a row while Kansas finished last each of those years. The Sooners are the league favorite again under Lincoln Riley. Oklahoma has been to the College Football Playoff twice with different Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks in Riley’s two seasons. Kansas is again expected to be on the opposite end of the Big 12 standings. But new Jayhawks coach Les Miles is the only Big 12 head coach with a national championship at college football’s highest level.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says there is no discussion at any level about expanding the 10-team league. Bowlsby began the league’s football media days talking about the successes of the smallest Power Five conference. That includes increasing revenue and new media opportunities. Bowlsby says the league likes its 10 schools and that won’t be an active topic within in the conference in the foreseeable future.

Geolocation part of new sports betting

News, Sports

July 15th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission got a look at some of the technology that will be used for sports gambling during their meeting last week. Iowa Racing and Gaming administrator, Brian Ohorilko, says the goelocation technology will ensure that online betting comes from within the state. “The way the federal laws work with regard to georegulation — is the individuals who are conducting the bets — they have to be located within the boundaries within the state in which the sports wagering is authorized,” Ohorilko explained.

The 19 state-licensed casinos can create their own betting apps, or team with a company that will provide them. Ohorilko says the apps include the ability to know the user’s location. “Geolocation is a very fascinating technology, it works very, very well. Customers when they are using their apps, those apps can work anywhere, but the wagering element will not work unless the geolocation provider can identify that the person is located within the state of Iowa,” Ohorilko says.  He says even if you are in neighboring states — you can’t complete a bet. “If someone is just across the river, those attempts to wager are being denied,” Ohorilko says.

Ohorilko says the geolocation technology can accurately know whether you are in or out of the state. “Those boundaries will be drawn for the state of Iowa — and it does not matter if it is a river boundary or a land boundary — they will be precise,” according to Ohorilko. “And if someone is attempting a wager outside of the state — that attempt will be denied.”

The Racing and Gaming Commission held a hearing on the rules for sports gambling at their meeting last week and a special meeting is set for July 30th, where it is expected they will adopt the rules.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered, Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2. Wainwright relied on a mixture of cutters, change-ups and curve balls as he allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven. Arizona trailed 5-0 going to the ninth before scoring twice and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, Carlos Martinez got Eduardo Escobar to hit a fly ball to center.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jeimer Candelario hit a bases-clearing double and Gordon Beckham added a two-run homer during a seven-run third inning, and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of Kansas City’s late pitching switch to beat the Royals 12-8. Nick Ramirez earned the win with three solid innings in relief of Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann. Brian Flynn took the loss after the late start in place of Homer Bailey, who was dealt to Oakland for an infield prospect.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals are sending Homer Bailey to the Oakland Athletics after scratching the veteran right-hander about 45 minutes before his scheduled start against Detroit. In return, Kansas City is getting minor league infielder Kevin Merrell. He’s been playing at Double-A Midland and will report to the Royals’ affiliate at Northwest Arkansas.

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Dylan Frittelli won the John Deere Classic for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over Russell Henley. The South African earned a spot next week in the British Open, finishing at 21-under 263 after the bogey-free final round at TPC Deere Run. Henley shot a tournament-best 61.

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama’s dominance ranks among the most impressive dynasties in college football history. It has also made the Southeastern Conference a bit stale recently as the league’s 14 teams gather for their annual media days this week in Hoover, Alabama. A group of talented quarterbacks might make the SEC a bit more interesting this fall. Georgia’s Jake Fromm, LSU’s Joe Burrow and Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond are among the standouts.
