Rollover Accident NW of Atlantic Monday Morning Injures Woman

A local woman was hurt in a rollover accident northwest of Atlantic this (Monday) morning, on Highway 83.

54 year old Jayne Marie Knight, of Atlantic, was taken to the Cass County Hospital by private vehicle for treatment.

The accident happened about eight-tenths of a mile north of the Atlantic City limits at around 6:15-a.m.  Knight was northbound and lost control of her 2005 Nissan Altima, which rolled into the north ditch near a tree line and corn field.

Cass County Sheriff’s officials estimate the damage to the car at 11-thousand dollars.

Villisca Man Arrested on Domestic Abuse Charge

A Villisca man was arrested Sunday night on a charge of aggravated domestic abuse assault while displaying a weapon.  Anthony Duane Pond was taken by Montgomery County deputies to the jail in Red Oak where he is held on two thousand dollars cash bond.  Law enforcement officials say the victim in the assault was not inured.

BILL HUTCHINSON, 68, of Manilla, died Sat., July 7th, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha. A Mass of Christian Burial service for BILL HUTCHINSON will be held 10:30-a.m. Sat., July 14th, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the church, after 9:30-a.m. Saturday.

Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Manilla.

His wife – Vera Hutchinson, of Manilla.

His daughter – Dawn (Dave) Brandt, of Manilla.

and 5 grandchildren.

Lenox Police break-up a fight, arrest TX man on warrant after being pepper-sprayed

The Lenox Police Department reports a Texas man, wanted on a U-S Marshal’s warrant for a parole violation, was arrested Sunday morning after a confrontation with police.

Officials say 23-year old Gilberto Pantoja, of Harlingen, TX, was wanted in Texas for violating his parole, on an original charge of discharging a firearm at a police officer. He was also wanted in Taylor County, for assault on a police officer. On Monday (July 9th), an additional charge of Causing Injury While Interfering with Officials Acts, was also filed.

Pantoja was arrested at around 4:30-a.m., Sunday, after Lenox Police were called to a reported fight in the 200 block of West Michigan Street. When officers attempted to arrest Pantoja, he allegedly resisted. Officers used pepper spray to control the man and him into custody.

Pantoja was transported to the Taylor County Jail where he was being held on the warrants and additional charge, Monday. Additional charges are pending as a result of the incident. One Lenox police officer suffered minor injuries during the incident. He was treated at the Corning hospital, and released.

Family plans funeral for Iowa soldier

EMERSON, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa soldier who was killed in Afghanistan last month will be remembered at a funeral next weekend.

The funeral for 25-year-old Army Sgt. James Skalberg will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Skalberg was one of two soldiers killed on June 27 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. The soldier killed was 24-year-old 1st Lt. Stephen Prasnicki, of Lexington, Va.

Skalberg graduated from Nishna Valley High School in 2005 and attended Peru State College in Peru, Neb. He joined the Army in 2007. Skalberg’s wife and son live in Red Oak.
