University of Iowa senior quarterback Nate Stanley and Iowa State sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy have been named to the 2019 Davey O’Brien Award Watch List, a group that includes 30 of the nation’s top quarterbacks.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award and is presented annually to the nation’s best collegiate quarterback by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Stanley (6-foot-4, 243-pounds) passed for 2,852 yards and 26 touchdowns — the second-most in the Big Ten and 22nd-most in the country — last season. Stanley’s 52 career touchdowns rank fourth in program history and are the most by a Hawkeye over a two-year span. The Menomonie, Wisconsin, native also ranks ninth in career passing yards (5,351) and total offense (5,240).

Purdy took over play-calling duties in the Cyclones 5th game in 2018 and broke or tied season school records in completion percentage (66.4), passing efficiency (169.9) and 300-yard passing games (three). His 169.9 passing efficiency clip ranked sixth nationally and was the best by a FBS true freshman in NCAA history. Purdy, who accounted for 21 of ISU’s 35 touchdowns in the final nine games, passed for 2,250 yards and 16 touchdowns, the fifth-best total in school history. He was also second on the team in rushing yards (308) and rushing touchdowns (5) in 2018.

The award was established in 1977 and named after TCU quarterback Davey O’Brien, who led the Horned Frogs to an undefeated season in 1938 en route to their second National Championship. He became the first ever player to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray won last year’s award.

Sixteen semifinalists for the award will be named Nov. 13 and three finalists will be announced Nov. 25. The 2019 Davey O’Brien Award winner will be unveiled live Dec. 12 on ESPN, during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.

AMES, Iowa – Two former football players responsible for changing the culture of the Iowa State football program have joined the Cyclone staff.

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell announced today that Joel Lanning, a 2017 First-Team All-American linebacker and 2018 Iowa State Gary Thompson Male Athlete of the Year, and Kyle Kempt, a 2017 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 quarterback who posted one of the greatest Cinderella stories in school history, will work as quality control assistants.

Lanning will assist with the Cyclone defense, while Kempt will help with the offense.

“Joel and Kyle are two of the biggest reasons we have been able to change the culture within our program at Iowa State,” Campbell said. “As captains, they were leaders who inspired greatness in their teammates. They also have sharp football minds and are eager to get into coaching. This will be a great first step for them as they initiate their coaching careers and they will be a valuable asset to our coaching staff and players.”

Lanning’s senior season in 2017 was one of the most memorable in school history. After spending his first four years in Ames as a quarterback, Lanning switched to linebacker for his final season. He proceeded to earn All-Big 12 honors and First-Team All-America accolades while leading the Cyclones to an 8-5 mark and a victory in the Liberty Bowl.

The two-time team co-captain was also one of the most versatile players in college football during his final season as a three-way player. The Ankeny, Iowa native took an astounding 1,001 snaps during the year- 822 on defense, 51 on offense and 128 on special teams.

He led the team and ranked third nationally in tackles per game (8.8), rushed for 135 yards and completed 3-of-4 passes for 47 yards. He became the first FBS player since 2006 (Eric Weddle) to record a sack, interception, fumble recovery, rushing TD and passing TD in a season.

His incredible versatility earned him national acclaim and runner-up honors for the Paul Hornung Award, given annually to the nation’s most versatile college football player.

Lanning played for the Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders in 2019.

“Coach Campbell and this staff helped turned my football career around and I will do whatever I can to give back,” Lanning said. “I also want to learn a lot from them and help the program out any way I can. You have to start your coaching career somewhere and I am blessed to be able to do it at Iowa State. This will be fun and a great opportunity for me.”

Kempt, a native of Massillon, Ohio, came to Iowa State as a walk-on in 2016. He saw action in two games and entered the 2017 campaign deep on the Cyclone depth chart at quarterback.

In the fifth game of the season, however, Kempt became an overnight sensation, leading the Cyclones to a 38-31 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., in his first career start. He threw for 343 yards (18-of-24) and three touchdowns in one of the greatest wins in school history.

He went on to tally a 5-3 record as a starter, leading the team to a national ranking, an 8-5 record and a victory in the Liberty Bowl.

Kempt threw for 1,787 yards, tossed 15 touchdown passes and completed 66.3 percent of his passes, the second-best clip in school history.

He is the only quarterback in Cyclone history to lead his team to a pair of wins over top-five opponents.

Kempt received a sixth season of eligibility in 2018 and was named a team co-captain prior to the season. Unfortunately, a severe knee injury in the first game of the season vs. Iowa derailed his last year on the team.

Kempt’s leadership didn’t falter, however. He took Brock Purdy under his wing and played a huge role in Purdy’s incredible rookie season where he set an NCAA record in passing efficiency (169.9) for a first-year quarterback.

“When I wasn’t the starting quarterback I always found a way to help out the other guys in the quarterback room,” Kempt said. “When I got hurt in my final year, I got the opportunity to help coach in the QB room with Coach (Joel) Gordon. That’s when I realized this was something I really wanted to do. Getting hurt and going through that situation, it opened another door for me. I am just thankful I was able to find something great out of that situation. I am passionate about this and really excited to help the team out.”

Kempt developed a strong bond with Coach Campbell, a fellow native of Massillon and a person who has been a positive influence in his life.

“With all of the events that have happened with Coach Campbell helping me out, I now have the chance to give back to the program that gave me so many opportunities,” said Kempt. “To be able to work under a coach as great as Coach Campbell, who is considered one of the best in the nation, is really special.”

Campbell also announced that Josh Rosenthal has been added to the staff as an assistant director of scouting.

Rosenthal was the director of football operations and wide receivers coach at Concordia (Minn.) in 2018. He worked four years at St. Thomas (Minn.) assisting the wide receivers prior to his stint at Concordia.

(AP) — Danny Duffy pitched a strong six innings and ended a nine-start winless streak, and Jorge Soler and Nicky Lopez hit back-to-back RBI singles twice as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5. Duffy scattered six hits and struck out five in sending Chicago to its season-worst sixth straight loss.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Michael Feliz in the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 6-5, dealing the Pirates their fifth loss in six games. St. Louis trailed 4-3 when Tommy Edman singled off Francisco Liriano with one out in the seventh and José Martinez walked. Feliz relieved, and Goldschmidt followed with his 18th homer. John Brebbia struck out four in two perfect innings. Carlos Martínez gave up an RBI single to Bryan Reynolds in the ninth.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ernie Broglio, a 21-game winner in 1960 who is remembered most as the player traded by the St. Louis Cardinals for Hall of Famer Lou Brock, has died. He was 83. Broglio’s daughter, Donna Broglio Cavallaro, confirmed her father’s death on social media. Another daughter, Nancy Broglio Salerno, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Broglio had been battling cancer and died Tuesday night..

NEW YORK (AP) — Speedy outfielder Terrance Gore has been traded to the New York Yankees by the Kansas City Royals for $100,000. The deal was announced before New York’s scheduled game against the Tampa Bay Rays was postponed due to a forecast of severe inclement weather. Gore was not added to the Yankees’ 40-man roster, and will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed shortstop Adalberto Mondesi on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder injury. Mondesi injured his shoulder in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game against the White Sox when he attempted to make a diving catch on the warning track in shallow left field.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas will begin selling beer and wine at home football games this season, joining a growing number of Big 12 schools to offer alcohol sales at sporting events. Jayhawks athletic director Jeff Long says it is an expansion of a trial program. Liquor sales will stop after the third quarter.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt was looking for a single. He ended up getting a whole lot more. Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Michael Feliz in the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 6-5 on Wednesday, dealing the Pirates their fifth loss in six games.

Tyler O’Neill also homered for the Cardinals, who won two of three from the Pirates.
O’Neill singled in a run in the first and hit a solo homer in the fifth. He is 10 for his past 20 with four home runs. Daniel Ponce de Leon made his first start since the Cardinals announced he was joining the rotation and gave up four runs, eight hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.

Cardinals: INF Jedd Gyorko (right wrist surgery) hit off a tee for the first time since getting hurt. “I don’t want to get too excited about anything yet because there’s still a lot of steps to go,” Gyorko said. “But we’re definitely I think on the mend. Everything is feeling better than what it used to so we’re headed in the right direction.”

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports conservation officers cited dozens of paddlers on July 6th for no life jackets on board their kayaks. The 300 plus paddlers, most in kayaks, some in inner tubes, were floating from the Puckerbrush Access to the Booneville Access on the Raccoon River, north of Van Meter, in Dallas County.

Nate Anderson, Iowa DNR conservation officer, says “It’s so important to have a life jacket on or at least available, as small paddling craft can easily tip and throw a paddler into the water. If you are sitting on the life jacket instead of wearing it, it won’t be there when you really need it.”

Safety incidents are on the rise among Iowa paddlers.  Forty-seven percent of Iowa’s 19 boating deaths from 2016 through 2018 were paddlers. Four paddlers, not wearing life jackets, died this year. Iowa law requires a life jacket to be on board all canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. Children 12 and under must wear a life jacket at all times when in a canoe, kayak or on a paddleboard.

Todd Robertson, paddling instructor and Outreach Coordinator for Rivers Programs at the Iowa DNR, says “You should always wear your life jacket, regardless of your swimming ability or paddling experience. This is super important when paddling on moving water, like a river, where changing currents and hazards can dump you into the river.”

(AP) — Glenn Sparkman pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game, Whit Merrifield and Hunter Dozier both had three hits including a home run, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White sox 11-0. Sparkman walked one and had a career-high eight strikeouts in the Royals’ first complete-game shutout since June 2, 2017, when Jason Vargas beat Cleveland 4-0.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Colin Moran drove in the go-ahead run with an infield single and the Pittsburgh Pirates scored twice in the ninth for a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Francisco Liriano pitched the eighth and earned the victory. Felipe Vazquez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 21st save. Carlos Martinez worked one inning of relief and took the loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chicago outfielder Eloy Jimenez and Kansas City shortstop Adalberto Mondesi have left Tuesday night’s game due to injuries. The White Sox said Jimenez left the game with right elbow soreness after a collision and that he will undergo further examination. Mondesi was led off the field with head trainer Nick Kenney holding his left arm.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed infielder Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with a right foot contusion. Carpenter injured his foot in the seventh inning of Monday night’s 7-0 win over the Pirates. He fouled a pitch off the top of his foot. The teams says X-rays on the foot came back negative.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Montgomery and Danny Duffy are being reunited on a pitching staff for Kansas City for the first time since 2011, when they were highly regarded left-handers in the Royals’ minor league system. Montgomery was traded to Kansas City by the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs for catcher Martin Maldonado on Monday.

The Audubon Wheelers and Southeast Warren Warhawks came out on top of their contests in a Class 1A District Semifinal doubleheader in Milo on Tuesday night. The Wheelers and Warhawks will meet back again on the same field in the District Final on Saturday night.

The Wheelers pulled off a bit of a surprise with an 11-1 victory over the CAM Cougars in the first game of the night. The Wheelers jumped out early to take a 1-0 lead in the first. They would then pile on 4 more runs in a breakout 5th inning before piling on 6 more in the top of the 7th to assure the win. Jackson Jensen and Skyler Schultes combined for a stellar night on the mound for the Wheelers. They gave up only 6 hits to the Cougars with 8 strikeouts (all from Jensen) and 4 walks and 1 hit batter. Gavin Smith and Aiden Alt both had 2 RBI doubles in the contest. The Wheelers improved to 13-13 and CAM ends their season at 24-6.

Southeast Warren woke up the cornfield beyond the left field fence with three homeruns in their 15-0 win over the Nodaway Valley Wolverines in the nightcap. The Warhawks got a 3-run shot from Brock Kyner to start the scoring in the 2nd. Bryce Hall hit a 2-run blast in the 3rd. Colby Page ended the game with a grand slam in the 4th. The Warhawks went around the order in the 4th and piled up 10 runs in the frame to prompt the mercy rule win. The Wolverines struggled on the mound by giving up 8 walks and hit 3 batters on the short night. Southeast Warren improved to 27-5 and Nodaway Valley ends the season at 15-11.

Southeast Warren will host Audubon on Saturday night at 7:00pm in Milo for the District Final. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 6:45pm.
