ST. LOUIS (AP) — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor survey shows an increase in extreme drought conditions in four Plains states but a slight decrease in the overall area of the lower 48 states experiencing some form of drought. The map posted Thursday on the monitor’s website shows that nearly two-thirds of the lower 48 states is experiencing some drought. Recent rainfall pushed the percentage down to 62.91, from last week’s 63.86. The report says one-fifth of the U.S. is experiencing extreme drought. That number ticked up nearly 2 percentage points to 22.3 percent, largely because of worsening conditions in parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Another quarterback battle is under way at Iowa State. Senior Steele Jantz and sophomore Jared Barnett say the players who improves his accuracy is likely to get the starting job. The two start preseason practice dead even on the depth chart after each led the team to three victories during the Cyclones’ 6-7 season a year ago. But Jantz completed just 53 percent of his passes, Barnett was a 50 percent passer and they combined for 17 interceptions against 16 touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham says they have to settle for taking what the defense gives them instead of trying to force the ball in hopes of making a big play.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Tamba Hali didn’t turn down a single autograph request. Even after a grueling two-hour workout on the campus of Missouri Western State University on Thursday, the star outside linebacker signed for more than half an hour. In Hali’s world, nothing gets done halfway. The 28-year-old Penn State product serves as the elder statesman and most experienced player on Kansas City’s defense, a unit that ranked in the top half of the league last year. Hali led the Chiefs in sacks five of his first six seasons after Kansas City took him with a first-round draft choice in 2006. Coming off a 7-9 season, the Chiefs are counting on Hali to help the younger players around him develop.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Over 200 hogs from Iowa that were stranded in a broken-down semitrailer in central Nebraska have been released from custody. KNOP-TV in North Platte) says the hogs were loaded into another livestock truck Wednesday night for the trip to California. The hogs were stranded for several hours on Tuesday when the semi broke down on Interstate 80 in North Platte. Officials had to hose down the animals in the 90-plus degree weather, and they were finally taken to the Lincoln County fairgrounds. The truck was repaired but the driver was cited for several violations, including animal cruelty. A judge issued a court order to release the hogs Wednesday afternoon. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema says star running back Montee Ball won’t be ready for camp after suffering a concussion during a street fight. According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Bielema said during a taping of a show at WISC-TV studios in Madison on Thursday that Ball won’t be ready when practice begins Monday. The Badgers open the season at home Sept. 1 against Northern Iowa. Bielema gave no indication Ball would suffer any long-term problems. He said Ball’s absence will spare last year’s Heisman Trophy finalist hits and give other backs more repetitions. Police said five men knocked Ball down as he was walking near campus early Wednesday. The men kicked him in the head and chest before fleeing.

Douglas became the third straight American to win gymnastics’ biggest prize, taking the lead on the very first event Thursday night and never really letting anyone else get close. She finished with a score of 62.232, less than three-tenths ahead of Viktoria Komova of Russia.

Douglas, who lives and trains in West Des Moines, brought the house down with her energetic floor routine, and U.S. teammates Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross jumped to their feet and cheered when she finished. Douglas flashed a smile and coach Liang Chow lifted her off the podium.
