Creston man arrested Saturday morning on drug & alcohol charges;Massena man arrested for DUI

Authorities in Adams County say a Union County man was arrested early Saturday morning on drug and alcohol charges. 36-year old Andy Gist, from Creston, was taken into custody at around 2:45-a.m., on charges that include Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Possession of drug paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana. He was also cited for speeding, and failure to have a license. Gist was later released on $2,585 bond. And, 55-year old Larry Biehn, of Massena, was arrested Friday night in Adams County, on a charge of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). He was later released on $1,000 bond.

Drug arrests follows traffic stop in Adams County Sunday

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County say three people were arrested early Sunday morning on drug charges following a traffic stop on Highway 148. 48-year old Mark Mitchell, 21-year old Dale Anson and 47-year old Tammy Forsee, all from Corning, face Possession of Narcotics with the Intent to Deliver, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Failure to Affix a Tax Stamp charges, after the vehicle they were in was pulled over on Highway 148 at around 12:30-a.m. Sheriff’s deputies along with the Adams County K-9 unit recovered a large amount of marijuana from the vehicle. A search warrant was obtained for a residence on 9th Street in Corning, during which more drug related items were found. An additional charges of Child Endangerment has also been filed against the trio. The suspects were being held in the Adams County Jail without bond.

Wanted Des Moines Man Arrested after Search in Shelby Co.

A Des Moines man wanted in Story County was arrested after first escaping from authorities in Shelby County.

On Friday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Probation and Parole attempted to serve an arrest warrant to 43-year-old James Ray Sparks of Des Moines at a residence in the 400 block of Mulberry Road in Shelby County.  Sparks fled the residence through the back door when officers arrived.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the escape and responded to the scene to help search a cornfield and bean field near the residence.  Authorities later received help from K-9 units in Cass and Pottawatamie County and from a private aircraft from the Harlan Airport.

After searching for several hours the search was called off and the suspect was not located.

Later that same evening at about 9:30, Sparks was located in in the 400 block of Mulberry Road in Shelby County and taken into custody by the Sheriff Mark Hervey.

Sparks was transported the Shelby County Jail where he is awaiting extradition to Story County for violation of probation charges.

Berkman to 15 Day DL

The St. Louis Cardinals have put first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right knee.

Outfielder Shane Robinson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. He was in the starting lineup on Friday night against Milwaukee.

Berkman went on the DL for the third time this season. He had surgery on his right knee in late May and said his knee is still not fully healed.

“It just needs to get stronger,” Berkman said. “It’s been frustrating.”

Berkman is hitting .267 with two homers and seven RBIs in 28 games.

Cardinals Beat Brewers 9-3

Rookie right-hander Joe Kelly broke a three-start losing streak and drove in the go-ahead run to help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

St. Louis has won three of its last four while Milwaukee had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Kelly (2-4) allowed three earned runs and 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings. His last win was an 11-4 victory at Kansas City on June 22. He entered the game with seven straight quality starts but took the loss in his last three games.

His first-pitch RBI single to left off Randy Wolf (3-8) broke a 3-3 tie and capped a four-run outburst in the fourth inning.

St. Louis managed just two hits in the first three innings off Wolf but scored four runs on five hits in the fourth.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The director of the Iowa Department of Human Services has denied a petition by some Republicans who want the state to stop using public money to pay for abortions in cases of rape and incest. Forty-one House GOP members filed the petition last month seeking to end Medicaid payments for such abortions, contending the state program violates state law. Iowa DHS Director Chuck Palmer announced the decision yesterday.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Workers have cleaned up after a truck spilled some animal entrails and parts on a Sioux City street. The spill occurred about 9:45 a.m. Thursday on the east side of the northwest Iowa City.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) – A federal fugitive has been arrested after a brief standoff with officers in northern Iowa’s Mason City. Twenty-five-year-old Levi Andersen was taken into custody on Thursday evening. Officers had been tipped that Andersen was at the residence in central Mason City, and they went there and made his arrest about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – A 29-year-old man already serving time for sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl has pleaded guilty in another child sex abuse case. Daryl Bentley made his plea on Thursday in Linn County District Court to the lesser charge of lascivious acts with a child. He’d been charged with sexual abuse of a 9-year-old girl between 2008 and 2009. In March 2010 Bentley was sentenced to 10 years in prison for abusing the 4-year-old girl.

EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) — An FBI spokeswoman says authorities returned to a lake in Evansdale to check on leads related to the search for two cousins who have been missing for three weeks. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that FBI agents went to Meyers Lake today but that there were “no positive results.” Ten-year-old Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, whose ninth birthday was Tuesday, disappeared July 13th while riding their bikes in Evansdale.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The value of an acre of Nebraska cropland rose more than any other state over the last year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says cropland in Nebraska climbed nearly 36 percent to $4,480 an acre. Second was North Dakota, which was up nearly 30 percent. Iowa cropland rose nearly 24 percent to $7,300 an acre and farm real estate rose nearly 23 percent to $7,000 an acre.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A Fort Dodge man has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in a shooting of a man who died months later under his family’s care in Florida. Twenty-six-year-old Derrick McElroy entered a written plea of not guilty yesterday in Iowa’s Webster County District Court. McElroy was charged last month in the May 2011 shooting death of 19-year-old Brandyn Preston.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ricky Stenhouse Junior will go for his fourth straight win at Iowa Speedway in tomorrow night’s U.S. Cellular 250. He enters the race in Newton, Iowa 13 points behind Nationwide Series leader Elliott Sadler.
