Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press
LEON, Iowa (AP) — Police in southern Iowa say they’ve made one arrest in a bizarre home invasion. The Des Moines Register reports that as many as four masked men broke into a house in Leon occupied by a 26-year-old woman and her children, ages 10, 4 and 3. Officers arrested a 24-year-old Urbandale man they found when they arrived, but the others ran and were not caught. The woman and children suffered minor injuries.
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Utility officials say it was a duck that caused a brief power outage for more than 400 customers in Mason City on Friday. A southwestern segment the city in north-central Iowa was without power for nearly an hour before 10 p.m. Friday.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Davenport police arrested a man suspected of hitting a bicyclist with his van, then throwing the bike on top of the injured cyclist. The 37-year-old driver from Davenport was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of assault. He was released Friday from the Scott County Jail. Police say the man was speeding Thursday night when he ran a stop sign, swerved and hit the bicyclist before beating him.
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A toddler found wandering a Waterloo street at night has been returned to his mother. Police tell the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that the boy, believed to be between 2 and 4 years old, was found on a street around 4 a.m. yesterday. No charges have been filed, but police are still investigating.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Juan Pierre beat out a run-scoring infield single in the 11th inning, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Jimmy Rollins reached off Barret Browning (0-2) on a fielder’s choice. He advanced to second base on a grounder and then stole third. Pierre hit one deep into the hole that shortstop Rafael Furcal made a great stab at and fired to first. Pierre just beat the throw to score Rollins and help the Phillies win two of three against the Cardinals. Philadelphia’s Erik Kratz hit a three-run homer off Mitchell Boggs in the eighth that tied the game 7-all. Ryan Howard also homered for the Phillies. Matt Carpenter had three RBIs for the Cardinals. Jeremy Horst (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win in a game that lasted 3 hours, 53 minutes.
In Saturday’s game, Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer and Jake Westbrook won his fifth straight start to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — With a new school year starting, Iowa drivers are being reminded of a new school bus safety law. “Kadyn’s Law” is named for Kadyn Halverson, a 7-year-old girl who was hit by a pickup and killed last year while walking to her bus. Aaron Gunderson, of Northwood, was sentenced in January to 15 years for her death. Cedar Rapids mother Mandy Norris tells The Gazette of Cedar Rapids that she and her two children live on a busy corner where the school bus stops, so she’s thankful for the new law. The law increases penalties for failure to slow for a bus with flashing lights or stop when the stop arm is extended. Injuring or killing a child under those conditions carries more severe penalties.
