Harlan woman cited after dog bite incident

Authorities say a Harlan woman was cited last Sunday after her dog allegedly bit a Harlan woman. According to the Harlan Police Department, 50-year old Teresa Wells was cited for allowing a dog to run at large, and for failure to license a dog. She was cited after her animal allegedly bit Becky Jones, of Harlan. The incident reportedly occurred in the 100 block of Market Street. Wells’ dog was quarantined at the City of Harlan Animal Shelter.

Mapleton man to plead guilty in plots to get shot

ONAWA, Iowa (AP) – Court documents say a 33-year-old western Iowa man accused of twice arranging to have someone shoot him has made a deal with prosecutors. Darren Hieber, of Mapleton, will plead guilty to one charge of conspiracy and two counts of solicitation for the shootings. The other charges will be dropped. He is scheduled to plead guilty on Aug. 20th.  Hieber is accused of persuading Brady Chapman to shoot him in a leg on Feb. 5. Hieber also is accused of hiring Joseph Roberts and Timothy Culley, both of Omaha, to shoot at him on March 8 in Mapleton. Authorities say Hieber was trying to gain sympathy from his ex-wife.  Roberts, Culley and Chapman have been given probation.

Prisoner found with drugs in Montgomery Co. Jail

A woman being held in the Montgomery County Jail faces additional charges after a corrections officer discovered the inmate was allegedly in possession of marijuana. According to Red Oak Police, 45-year-old Tammy Raye Thallus was arrested Thursday on a Possession of Contraband charge, which is a felony offense. Thallus is being held in the county jail on $5,000 bond. Court records did not indicate what the original charges against her were.

A Red Oak man arrested earlier this week on forgery and burglary charges has also been charged with felony theft. 27-year-old Kenton Jarvis Schooling was charged Thursday with possession of a stolen motorcycle, a Class D felony, and 3rd degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor. Schooling remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a total of $10,000 bond.

Red Cross says 3 extra donors are needed at blood drives in August

As the Summer winds down, the hustle and bustle of families falling back into school work and routines will begin. The American Red Cross is taking this time to remind eligible donors to add “Help Save Lives” to their list of activities. Officials say at least three extra donors are needed at all August blood drives, above what’s currently expected. The donors are critically needed in order for the Red Cross to readily meet hospital and patient needs this month, and into the coming Fall.

While eligible donors can give blood every 56 days, the average donor gives blood less than two-times per year. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org, to make an appointment, or for more information. All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or two other forms of identification are needed at check-in. Donors must be 17-years of age or older (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110-pounds, and be in generally good health.

Annett returns to Iowa looking for 1st career win

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) – Michael Annett says there would be no better place to win his first NASCAR Nationwide Series race than Iowa Speedway. The track in Newton is 30 miles from his hometown of Des Moines, and Annett has been on the verge of a breakthrough for weeks. The 26-year-old goes into Saturday’s U.S. Cellular 250 on a career-best run. He came in sixth last week at Indianapolis and was in the top five in three of four races before that. Annett is among three native Iowans in the Nationwide field this week. He’s joined by Joey Gase of Cedar Rapids and Brett Moffitt of Grimes, who will make his first career series start. Annett has more than $3.6 million in career earnings. He’s sixth in the point standings this year.

Weekend fight leads to an arrest in Shelby County

A fight last weekend led to the arrest of an Avoca man, and complaints filed against two other people. Police in Harlan reported Thursday, that 18-year old Terry Ward, of Avoca, was arrested last Saturday for Disorderly Conduct, Public Intoxication and Assault, for allegedly striking 43-year old Shannon Graves, of Des Moines. The incident occurred in the pit area of the Shelby County Speedway. Graves was transported to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, where she was treated for minor injuries. Officials say complaints were filed against Graves, and 24-year old Andrew Coffman, of Des Moines, for Disorderly Conduct.

The H-PD also reports 56-year old Ricky Lee Hansen, of Harlan, was arrested July 27th, on Driving While Intoxicated/2nd offense, and careless driving, charges. The arrest took place following a traffic stop in Harlan.

And, last Sunday, officers in Harlan investigated the theft of a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix from the Jerry Davis residence. The vehicle was later recovered at the J.J. Jensen sports complex. An investigation into the theft continues.

Vandalism reported in Villisca

Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating an incident of vandalism in Villisca. Officials said Thursday a resident in the 100 block of East 2nd Street in Villisca reported someone scratched words into the driver’s side door of her 2002 Ford Windstar van, while it was parked in her driveway. The incident, which occurred sometime during the nighttime hours of August 1st and August 2nd, caused $700 damage. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department at 712-623-5107, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-432-1001.
