Olympics: Iowa native Lolo Jones posts 2nd fastest time in 100 hurdles heat races

Iowa native Lolo Jones advanced to the semifinals of the 100 meter hurdles Monday, at the London Olympics. The Des Moines Roosevelt graduate won her quarterfinal round heat by posting the second fastest time (12.68 seconds) of the 50 athletes in the field. Des Moines Register sports columnist Bryce Miller, who’s in London, believes Jones has a good shot at winning a medal. Miller also watched Jones compete in Eugene, Oregon in June at the Olympic Trials where she narrowly qualified for the final spot on the U.S. team.

“I don’t think I would’ve said she had a shot to medal at the trials, but I’m rethinking that a bit now,” Miller told Radio Iowa. Sally Pearson of Australia, the ’08 silver medalist who’s ranked number-one in the world, posted the fastest time this morning at 12.57 seconds. Americans Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells also advanced to the semifinals. Harper won Olympic gold in 2008 after Jones was leading the race, but Jones clipped the second to last hurdle and stumbled to a 7th place finish. Miller said Monday, this is the healthiest Jones has been in over a year.

“She had surgery last August, a year out from the Olympics, and then she had a couple of hamstring injuries earlier this year,” Miller said. “So, they really went into the trials without training or working out significantly. To make the Olympic team with the (quality) field they had, that said something, and then today (Monday) she ran with even more confidence. You could tell talking to her and her coach, I think she truly is significantly healthier than she’s been (dating) all the way back into last summer.” Jones posted her best time of the season Monday. Miller said Jones and the other medalist hopefuls will run even faster, Tuesday.

“Who didn’t put the foot on the gas all the way during the heat races? I would imagine Dawn Harper, looking at her race, didn’t go at top speed because she won so easily. Kellie Wells was in the same situation. So, we’ll find out, but it was a good start (for Jones), there’s no doubt about it,” Miller said. Dawn Harper, like Jones, has ties to Iowa. Harper’s father and siblings live in Iowa City. The semifinal races for the 100 meter hurdles are scheduled for 1:15 p.m., Iowa time,  Tuesday. The final will take place at 3 p.m., Iowa time.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — After finishing next-to-last in scoring last season, the Kansas City Chiefs have several reasons to hope for a big offensive rebound. Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles is back from ACL surgery, as is tight end Tony Moeaki. A new offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll, has installed a new offense, and quarterback Matt Cassel looks to be 100 percent healed from a hand injury that shelved him for the last seven games in 2011. Kansas City also will be counting on a trio of free agent acquisitions: right tackle Eric Winston, running back Peyton Hillis and tight end Kevin Boss. Romeo Crennel, who has replaced Todd Haley as head coach, refuses to put a label on his new system other than calling it “a winning offense.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Reserve defensive back Collin Sleeper of Iowa will serve what coach Kirk Ferentz termed a multigame suspension because of past rules violations. Ferentz announced the suspension Monday at the Hawkeyes’ media day. He did not specify the length of the suspension other than to say it would last at least two games. Ferentz also did not say what rules Sleeper had violated. Sleeper, a senior from Solon, is listed as a backup at strong safety on the team’s depth chart. He played in 11 games last year and made 14 tackles.

Cubs place Garza on DL

Sports

August 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be shut down “indefinitely,” general manager Jed Hoyer said Monday. Garza hasn’t pitched since he felt stiffness in his right elbow in a July 21 start at St. Louis. An MRI of his elbow showed some irritation at the tip of a bone in what is being characterized a “stress reaction.” Hoyer said Garza won’t throw for at least two weeks, but he didn’t rule out the possibility of his return this season. Garza was 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 18 starts. Raley was 4-8 with a 3.62 ERA in 14 starts with Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs are expected to recall left-hander Brooks Raley to make his major league debut Tuesday in San Diego.

Omaha school board votes to retain president

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha school board has retained its president. The board voted 8-4 Monday night to keep Freddie Gray as its leader. She was under fire over the Nancy Sebring case. The board hired Sebring, the superintendent of the Des Moines, Iowa, school board, in April to replace John Mackiel, who retired. Sebring abruptly left her Iowa job in May. She lost the Omaha job after emails to a lover on her district computer became public. At issue was whether board members thought Gray acted appropriately by withholding information about Sebring’ resignation in Iowa. Board officers are elected by majority vote and serve for a year. Gray took the position in January. The board action came after 90 minutes of public comment and board discussion.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin running back Montee Ball hasn’t been cleared to practice as he recovers from a concussion sustained when he was roughed up by five men in an early morning incident near campus last week. Badgers coach Bret Bielema says the team will work Ball back into practice slowly, and hopes he will be ready for the Sept. 1 season opener against Northern Iowa.

Iowa crops continue slide in hot, dry summer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s crops continue to decline as the drought tightens its grip on key farm states. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 49 percent of the corn crop is in poor to very poor condition. Last week, it was 46 percent. Just 16 percent is rated good or excellent. The USDA says 37 percent of the soybean crop is in bad shape. That compares to 30 percent a week ago. The dry summer is also taking a toll on Iowa’s pastureland, with 86 percent rated poor or very poor. Storms arrived late Friday and Saturday with over 2 inches of rain in eastern Iowa. The statewide average for the week was 0.62 inches, or two-thirds of the normal. Audubon got 0.01 inches of rain, ending a streak of 41 dry days. In Atlantic, we received just one-tenth of an inch of rain Saturday, ending our dry streak of 37 days.
