ST. LOUIS (AP) – Yadier Molina had three hits and two RBIs in his return to the lineup, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a big 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.  St. Louis bounced back from Friday night’s 2-1 loss in the series opener and pulled within a game of Pittsburgh for the second NL wild-card spot. Jaime Garcia is expected to come off the disabled list to start Sunday’s series finale against Pirates right-hander Jeff Karstens.

Molina also had two RBIs and scored a run after missing the previous three games with a sore back. He hit a tiebreaking two-run double off Erik Bedard (7-13) in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead. Jordy Mercer had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates, who struck out 14 times.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It’s been a brutal month for Lolo Jones. She’s been dissected in the media and dissed by her own teammates. If that wasn’t bad enough, Jones failed to even medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the recent London Olympics after spending four years working to overcome her heartbreaking stumble in Beijing. An over-the-top Olympic-style homecoming in her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, was exactly what Jones needed. An emotional Jones joined a cast of Iowa-based Olympians that included gymnast Gabby Douglas and wrestler Jake Varner, both gold medalists, in a raucous celebration on the campus of Drake University. Jones says the support of her fans is a light in dark times.

A house fire in Council Bluffs early this (Saturday) morning resulted in the death of a young child. According to the Council Bluffs Police Department, the fire at 313 North 34th Street was reported to 9-1-1 just after 6-a.m. Neighbors say they were wakened by the sounds of Crystal Hatcher, the mother three children, screaming in the street. Officials say Hatcher, a six-year old and two-year old child were able to escape the home, but 4-year old Leland Johnson, of Council Bluffs was trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Fire officials said it took firefighters nearly 10-minutes to reach the boy, because of the heavy smoke and flames.

When they found the unconscious child, the boy was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where he died from his injuries. Hatcher and her two other children were provided with food and clothing following the fire, which remains under investigation. The blaze destroyed the house and a car parked in the driveway. The family was reported to have found shelter with area relatives.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A task force created earlier this year by the Iowa Legislature is proposing to raise the base pay for Iowa teachers by $7,000. The Task Force on Teacher Leadership and Compensation’s proposal would bump starting salaries for public school teachers from $28,000 to $35,000. Committee members say the increase would likely raise the average earnings of a first-year teacher statewide from $32,000 to $40,000. Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass says more than 190 of the state’s 348 school districts set their base pay at the state minimum of $28,000. The task force will discuss the proposal and others at its Sept. 21 meeting. Committee members will vote on which recommendations to include in an Oct. 15 report to the Legislature.

Appeals court rejects challenge on ethanol

Ag/Outdoor

August 18th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court has rejected a challenge to Environmental Protection Agency decisions allowing an increase in ethanol content in gasoline. In a 2-1 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said trade associations of engine manufacturers, food producers and petroleum producers did not have standing to sue because they failed to show that their members are harmed by the EPA action.

In two decisions, the agency approved the introduction of a gasoline blend of up to 15 percent ethanol for use in light-duty vehicles from model-year 2001 and later. The national gasoline supply is largely a blend with 10 percent ethanol. Ethanol producers, who sought the 15 percent option, say the ruling keeps a pathway open that could enable ethanol demand to expand.
