DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Three state officials will decide today whether Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson’s name appears on the Iowa ballot in November. Documents challenging Johnson’s candidacy were filed Friday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — President Barack Obama has added a stop in Sioux City to his Iowa travel plans this week. Obama will hold an event today at Iowa State University in Ames, then will return to the state Saturday. The Democrat had previously announced a visit Saturday to Des Moines, and yesterday a campaign official confirmed Obama added the stop in Sioux City.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa farmers are hopeful last week’s rain will help the soybean crop as the corn harvest gets under way during the nation’s worst dry spell in a generation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says farmers are still chopping corn for silage and starting to harvest corn for grain and seed. Fifty-three percent of the corn crop is in poor to very poor condition.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Board of Regents has started the search for a replacement for University of Northern Iowa President Ben Allen. The regents met by telephone yesterday to authorize the board to hire a firm to help with the search.

Chiefs Still Trying to Find Identity in Preseason

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are heading toward their preseason finale Thursday night at Green Bay with what appears to be an identity problem. Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis give Kansas City one of the league’s best backfields — a quintessential thunder-and-lightning look. And with the play of Matt Cassel at quarterback one of the biggest question marks entering the regular season, there’s little doubt the Chiefs prefer to be a defensive-minded, ball-control team. That makes the way Friday night’s 44-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks played out all the more surprising. New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll aired it out 44 times. Even Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel sounded a bit perplexed by the direction the team is headed, and admitted that it needs to figure out quickly what it does well.

ROBERTA “BERTIE” MARIE REIFF, 62, of Griswold, died Mon., Aug. 27th, at her home in Griswold.  Funeral services for ROBERTA REIFF will be held 11-A.M. Thu.,  Aug. 30th, at the Oakland Christian Church. Rieken-Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland has the arrangements.

There will be an open visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, with the family will be present from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Interment will be at the Oaklawn Cemetery.

ROBERTA “BERTIE” REIFF is survived by:

Her children: Rodney Pendgraft and his wife Angela; Tracy Beason; and Stephanie Reiff.

Her step children: Joyce and Anita.

Her brother: Robert

Her grandchild, other relatives and friends.

Holliday Homers to Lead Cards over Pirates 4-3

Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking home run and Kyle Lohse won his eighth consecutive decision, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Holliday led off the sixth inning with his 24th homer, a drive to right field off A.J. Burnett that put St. Louis ahead for good at 3-2. Lohse (14-2) pitched five innings before being lifted following a 34-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth. He allowed two runs and five hits while striking out three and walking none. Lohse has not lost in 13 starts dating to June 15 and raised his career record against Pittsburgh to 9-2. Burnett (15-5) gave up four runs, three earned, and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He lost at home for just second time this season in 10 decisions and 13 starts.

Rain may help Iowa soybeans, but too late for corn

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa farmers are hopeful last week’s rain will help the soybean crop as the corn harvest gets under way during the nation’s worst dry spell in a generation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says farmers are still chopping corn for silage and starting to harvest corn for grain and seed. Fifty-three percent of the corn crop is in poor to very poor condition. The USDA says farmers are hoping soybean plants will produce more pods because of the rain, which averaged 1.29 inches last week. It was the wettest week in 10 weeks. Nineteen percent of the soybean crop is turning color, and some leaves are dropping. Soybeans are rated 36 percent poor or very poor, 39 percent in fair condition and 25 percent in good or excellent shape.

Obama plans weekend stop in Sioux City

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — President Barack Obama has added a stop in Sioux City to his Iowa travel plans this week. Obama will hold an event Tuesday at Iowa State University in Ames, then will return to the state Saturday. The Democrat had previously announced a visit Saturday to Des Moines, and on Monday a campaign official confirmed Obama has added the stop in Sioux City. The events follow Obama’s three-day bus tour of the state earlier in August. Likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney also has visited Iowa, including an event last week in Bettendorf. Iowa is among seven states where neither candidate is believed to have a significant advantage, making the states key to deciding who will win the November election.

Clarinda woman arrested for attacking a man with a shovel & stun gun

Police in Clarinda report a 28-year old female was arrested Sunday evening on an aggravated assault charge after allegedly accosting a 65-year old man with a shovel and stun gun. Jenifer Leann Holmes was taken into custody following the incident, which allegedly occurred at around 7-p.m., at a residence on East Lincoln Street. Officials say Gary Laverne Holmes did not appear to be injured following the incident. Jennifer Holmes was transported to the Page County Jail where she later posted bail in the amount of $2,000.00.

Producers Reminded of Deadlines for CRP Emergency Grazing and Haying

The Iowa Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds producers who requested emergency grazing and haying on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres of the deadline dates to remove cattle or hay from the CRP acres. Producers with emergency grazing authorization must remove livestock no later than September 30, 2012. For those producers haying the authorized acreage, all haying must be completed no later than August 31, 2012. Bales must be removed by September 30, 2012.

CRP participants who participated in the emergency grazing and haying must report the number of acres actually hayed or grazed no later than September 30, 2012, and reports are subject to spot check by USDA. In addition, participants must report the tonnage harvested or the number of livestock grazed by September 30. For more information about the deadline dates and required information for emergency grazing and haying of CRP acres contact your local FSA office.
