Schedule shifting for a number of area high school football teams

Sports

August 6th, 2019 by admin

There have been some adjustments to the 2019 high school football schedule for some area teams. The changes are due to the Stanton and Essex programs sharing a team now for the 2019 season and Clarinda Academy not fielding a team this year. Those changes left some holes in the schedule for 8-Man District 7 teams and they were allowed to seek game additions to fill the schedule out.

The Griswold Tigers recently released their revised schedule which will add a Week 0 contest on August 23rd against Ar-We-Va. The Tigers will also now play a home-and-home within the season against Stanton/Essex. Stanton/Essex will have a Week 0 game as well, against Murray.

Some other Week 0 games added for 8-Man District 7 teams include: East Mills @ Audubon, Sidney @ Seymour, and Lenox @ Bedford. The revised schedules for Griswold and Stanton/Essex can be seen below.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer and rookie Tony Gonsolin pitched six stellar innings of two-hit ball for his first victory in the Dodgers’ 8-0 win over the Cardinals. Gonsolin retired 14 of the Cardinals’ first 15 batters and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of his second career start. Michael Wacha couldn’t get out of the fourth inning for the Cardinals, who dropped to 0-3 on their five-game California road trip.

BOSTON (AP) — Rick Porcello pitched six innings of one-run ball, Sam Travis hit a two-run homer and the Boston Red Sox halted their eight-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the struggling Kansas City Royals. Rafael Devers added a solo shot for the Red Sox.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jovan Dewitt’s happy place is on the practice field. He’s never appreciated being there as much as he does now. Dewitt is back at his job as Nebraska’s outside linebackers coach following intense treatments for throat cancer that caused him to lost 102 pounds and zapped most of his energy. He had 38 rounds of radiation and three rounds of chemotherapy and was hospitalized most of April. He weighed about 310 pounds before his diagnosis and was just over 200 after the treatment regimen.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have as many as eight new starters on defense this season, so they are counting on a couple of newcomers to provide some leadership. And given the backgrounds of safety Tyrann Mathieu and defensive end Frank Clark, it makes sense that they have arrived in Kansas City with chips on their shoulders.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears rookie running back David Montgomery will get his first chance to test his skills against NFL players on Thursday in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. The third-round draft pick out of Iowa State hasn’t had much chance to run against live tackling in camp but has been learning the passing game in the Bears’ offense. The Bears also have questions about their tight end position to address.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Tanner Roark pitched five innings to get the win in his Oakland debut, and the Athletics beat Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2. Jurickson Profar connected for his 15th homer as the A’s won for the sixth time in seven games. Dustin Garneau had two hits and two RBIs after he was claimed off waivers Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Devin Smeltzer pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning for his first major league win, and the Minnesota Twins completed a three-game sweep by blanking the Kansas City Royals 3-0. Jason Castro homered and Eddie Rosario drove in two runs for the Twins, who maintained their three-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central. Luis Arraez had two hits and scored twice.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Infielder Matt Carpenter was activated from the injured list by the St. Louis Cardinals and was set to lead off against the Oakland Athletics. Carpenter fouled a ball off his right foot against Pittsburgh on July 15 and missed 17 games with a bruise. He went 2 for 26 with seven walks in nine minor league injury rehabilitation games. Catcher Yadier Molina began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

SEATTLE (AP) — Felipe Gutierrez scored twice in the first half, including his fifth penalty kick conversion of the season, boosting Sporting Kansas City past the Seattle Sounders 3-2. Erik Hurtado also scored for Sporting, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Jordan Morris scored twice for the Sounders, giving him seven goals for the season and three in the past two games.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mike Fiers took a shutout into the sixth inning for his eighth consecutive win, and the Oakland Athletics beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3. Pinch-hitter Chad Pinder delivered a three-run homer to keep the A’s unbeaten in three games against the Cardinals this season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Cruz hit three home runs in a game for the second time in 10 days, powering the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals 11-3. A day after he homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, Cruz again had five RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo drive in the second and a two-run homer in the sixth. Cruz didn’t get a chance at a record-tying fourth home run _ he was left on deck when Jorge Polanco grounded out to end the eighth.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Tony Gonzalez probably could have been a star in the NBA. Instead, he chose the NFL path, and the most productive tight end in history has entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A six-time All-Pro, Gonzalez helped revolutionize the position, lining up in traditional tight end spots as well as flanked out or in the backfield _ pretty much everywhere on the field

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Marcell Ozuna from the injured list Saturday and put him in left field and batting cleanup against the Oakland Athletics. Ozuna missed 28 games with fractured fingers on his right hand, an injury he suffered against San Diego on June 28.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are still sorting out their running back situation with a week to go before their preseason opener, and the job hasn’t gotten any easier with starter Damien Williams sidelined by a hamstring injury. Carlos Hyde, Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson and cornerback-turned-running back Tremon Smith are among those in the mix.
