Iowa Lottery says $1M prize awaits ticket buyer

News

September 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

URBANDALE, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Lottery officials say someone who bought a Powerball ticket in suburban Des Moines has won $1 million.   The lottery said in a news release Sunday night that the ticket matched five of the six Powerball numbers drawn Saturday night: 8, 11, 21, 44 and 49. The ticket didn’t match the Powerball number of 22, so the buyer didn’t win the $80 million Powerball prize.  The ticket was sold at a Hy-Vee store on Douglas Avenue in Urbandale.  The lottery says it’s the sixth $1 million-winning ticket sold since the $2 Powerball began in January.

COUNTIES: CARROLL-AUDUBON-GUTHRIE-DALLAS-CASS-ADAIR-MADISON-ADAMS-UNION-TAYLOR-RINGGOLD

451 AM CDT MON SEP 3 2012

TODAY AND TONIGHT: CHANCES FOR THUNDERSTORMS INCREASE ACROSS THE AREA TODAY INTO TONIGHT. THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT…WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS THE MAIN SEVERE THREATS.

COUNTIES: POTTAWATTAMIE-MILLS-MONTGOMERY-FREMONT-PAGE

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND A FEW ISOLATE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE LATER THIS MORNING. SEVERE STORMS ARE NOT ANTICIPATED WITH THIS ROUND OF STORMS…BUT MAY BE POSSIBLE LATER THIS AFTERNOON.  A WEAK FRONTAL BOUNDARY WILL SAG SOUTH TODAY AND WILL BE THE  FOCUS FOR THUNDERSTORMS INTO THE EVENING. A QUICK MOVING UPPER  LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL AID THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT THIS
AFTERNOON. STORMS COULD BECOME SEVERE LATER THIS AFTERNOON WITH DAMAGING WIND AND LARGE HAIL THE PRIMARY HAZARDS. IF CLOUD COVER PERSISTS THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE AFTERNOON…THIS WILL LIMIT THE INSTABILITY AND SEVERE STORMS WOULD THEN BE LESS LIKELY. ANY SEVERE STORMS SHOULD REMAIN GENERALLY SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man will face tougher criminal charges because of what he yelled out while he was being arrested after a July shooting at a Waterloo bar. Prosecutors have now charged 53-year-old Roland Anderson of Waterloo with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of 39-year-old Maurice Stovall on July 22nd. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Anderson yelled that he wished Stovall was dead as he was being put into a police car. Stovall was wounded several times in the attack but he survived.

Strasburg dominant, Nats produce late to top Cards

Sports

September 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg allowed two hits over six scoreless innings, striking out nine before being pulled Sunday as the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3. The NL East-leading Nationals took three of four from St. Louis and passed their 80-win total from last season. Strasburg, rocked for seven runs last Tuesday at Miami, left with a 2-0 lead. The 23-year-old Strasburg has struck out 195 in 156 1-3 innings this season. The Nationals have repeatedly stated they intend on shutting him down in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2010. The Nationals have been vague about an innings limit, but the team sat Jordan Zimmermann at 161 1-3 innings last season in a similar situation.

Missouri Valley gives major programs major workout

Sports

September 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — If the Big 12 ever wants to expand to 12 members again, the league’s powerbrokers might want to take a look at poaching a couple schools from the Missouri Valley Conference. Of course, Kansas and Kansas State might quickly object. Both of them had to work against schools from the Football Championship Subdivision in their season openers Saturday. They weren’t alone, either: Wisconsin had to make a late defensive stand to beat Northern Iowa, Indiana State took Indiana to the brink, and Pittsburgh was embarrassed by Youngstown State in Paul Chryst’s debut as Panthers coach. Yes, it was a banner day for the Missouri Valley, a league better known for its hoops but one that now has 11 football wins against members of BCS conferences since 2000.
