Fewer Iowans buying hunting, fishing licenses

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Fewer Iowans are buying hunting and fishing licenses, but state officials say that doesn’t necessarily mean interest in the sports are waning.  Sales of hunting licenses to Iowa residents dropped 13 percent from 2007 to last year, and resident fishing licenses declined about 4 percent during that period. Nationally, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates hunting is up 9 percent and fishing has increased 11 percent.

Joe Larscheid, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Bureau, says that the national numbers are based on interviews. He says fishing remains strong in Iowa and license declines could reflect recent flooding.  DNR spokesman Kevin Baskins says declining pheasant populations hurt hunting license sales. That decline is blamed on grassland losses and recent harsh winters.

Shenandoah man dies following Aug. 20th crash

News

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A Shenandoah man who was critically injured during a rollover accident last week northwest of Malvern, has died from his injuries. In an updated report from the Iowa State Patrol released early this (Wednesday) morning, officials say 46-year old Robert Gene Ryan, of Shenandoah died at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

Ryan had been flown by helicopter to the hospital on August 20th, after he was ejected from a 1994 Mazda pickup truck at around 10:50-p.m.  The pickup had been traveling west on Highway 34, when it entered the south ditch and crossed 288th Street, before rolling over. Another man in the vehicle 29-year old Lyle Francis Stogdill, also from Shenandoah, was transported by Malvern Rescue to Creighton. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Officials are still not sure which man was driving the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

Pickup hauling hay overturns in Montgomery County

News

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A pickup truck pulling a trailer with four large, round bales of hay overturned into a ditch Tuesday afternoon about three-miles southeast of Elliott, after the trailer began to sway, causing the driver to lose control. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says a 1998 Chevy Silverado 2500 pickup driven by 93-year old James Wendell Henry, of Carson, was traveling south on M Avenue, about one-quarter of a mile north of 140th Street, when the trailer began to sway as the vehicle was traveling down hill.

The whipping action of the trailer and its heavy load of hay caused the rear end of the pickup to slide and jack-knife with the trailer into the west ditch, before the truck rolled onto its side. James Henry was able to escape the vehicle without injury. The truck, owned by Steven Bergren, of Red Oak, sustained about $7,500 damage, but the trailer was not damaged. The accident happened at around 3:15-p.m., Tuesday.

Chiefs enduring their usual wretched preseason

Sports

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are assured of their ninth straight losing preseason. At 1-2 going into Thursday night’s final tuneup at Green Bay, the Chiefs since 2004 are a woebegone 7-28 in preseason games. They haven’t posted a winning preseason since 2003, when Dick Vermeil’s Chiefs won the Hall of Fame game to finish 3-2. They then tore through the regular season 13-3. Anyone who insists that preseason games are meaningless should take note that Kansas City’s combined 6-26 record of the past eight years was followed by 53 wins and 75 losses in the regular season, one playoff appearance and no postseason wins. Coach Romeo Crennel may use the starters against Green Bay much more than first-teamers normally play in a game that usually belongs to backups and longshots.

Pirates rough up Cardinals in 9-0 win

Sports

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Alvarez homered twice and drove in four runs, James McDonald scattered two hits over seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beats the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 on Tuesday night. Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Pirates a comfortable lead, added an RBI double in the fourth then hit a 469-foot blast to center in the sixth. He went 4 for 5 as Pittsburgh drew within two games of the Cardinals in the race for the NL’s second wild-card spot. McDonald (12-6) gave up two hits, walked one and struck out six to beat the Cardinals and Jake Westbrook (13-10) for the second time in the last two weeks. The Cardinals played most of the game without catcher Yadier Molina, who suffered neck, back and shoulder injuries following a violent collision at home plate with Pittsburgh second baseman Josh Harrison.

Iowa RB Bullock the latest hope for Hawkeyes

Sports

August 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Damon Bullock will step into perhaps the most treacherous position in college football on Saturday when he starts at running back for Iowa. The Hawkeyes just can’t seem to keep its tailbacks on the field. Iowa’s bad luck with backs reached a breaking point in the offseason. Five players expected to compete for carries in 2012 won’t be on the field Saturday when the Hawkeyes face Northern Illinois in Chicago. All that’s left is Bullock, a sophomore who also played receiver in 2011, and a pair of true freshman in Greg Garmon and walk-on Michael Malloy. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Bullock had a good fall camp and that he’s been impressed by Garmon and Malloy.
