AMES, Iowa (AP) — The homeless man who pleaded guilty to killing a former Iowa State golfer has told a judge that he’s sorry for his crime. A handwritten letter from 22-year-old Collin Richards says he wanted to show remorse “for stripping a life from society … worse from a loving family.” The letter was filed Tuesday into court records.
Richards is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 23 to life in prison. Police say he killed 22-year-old Celia Barquín Arozamena, stabbing her last September while she was playing on a course near the campus in Ames, leaving her body in a pond. Richards had been staying at a homeless encampment in nearby woods.
Barquín Arozamena was a top golfer in Spain as a teenager and came to Iowa State to pursue her career.

(AP) — The Cardinals activated catcher Yadier Molina from the injured list, placed outfielder Jose Martinez on it with a shoulder injury and selected outfielder Randy Arozarena from Triple-A Memphis before opening a two-game series at Kansas City. Molina has been out since July 8 with a strained right thumb tendon that has caused the nine-time All-Star to miss the past 28 games.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes lit the league on fire last season, throwing for more than 5,000 yards with 50 touchdown passes and a mere 12 interceptions. But the Chiefs quarterback showed in their preseason opener Saturday night that he’s grown even more, as evidenced by a seemingly simple slide toward the end of his only drive against Cincinnati.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa will feature a three-year starter at quarterback in Nate Stanley, a veteran offensive line and a defense led by Big Ten sack leader A.J. Epenesa. The Hawkeyes are optimistic about the season, though the schedule is daunting. Iowa will play Iowa State, Michigan, defending division champion Northwestern and division rivals Wisconsin and Nebraska on the road.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Wins in four of its last six games left Nebraska coaches and players optimistic about what lies in store in 2019. The Cornhuskers are a popular pick to win the Big Ten West. Quarterback Adrian Martinez returns and the defense expects to continue improving in year two of the 3-4 system. Nebraska also has a favorable schedule with most of its key Big Ten games at home. The Huskers open Aug. 31 at home against South Alabama.

Momentum Nebraska built the second half of last season could carry over heading into Scott Frost’s second year. A favorable schedule makes the Cornhuskers a trendy pick for the Big Ten title game.
Licenses to pursue Iowa’s world class deer herd go on sale Aug. 15 at more than 700 license sales agents statewide and online at www.iowadnr.gov. Resident Iowa hunters may purchase one any deer license for a gun season, one any deer license for archery season and one county specific antlerless deer only license.
The number of county specific license quotas for antlerless deer only has changed for 24 counties – 20 counties quotas increased and four county quotas decreased. Hunters may purchase one antlerless only deer license until Sept. 15, then as many as they want until the season ends or quotas fill.
Officials with the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources report Norma McCutchan, life science teacher at Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, is the 2019 recipient of the Brass Bluegill award from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fish Iowa! program. McCutchan started using Fish Iowa! in 2012 to introduce animal behavior and Iowa’s natural resources to her sophomore classes, and share her love of the outdoors. McCutchan says “Many of my students aren’t aware of the nature around them, activities available outdoors, and the impact we have on an ecosystem.” She said also, “I’m an outdoors person and want to share my experiences and passion for nature, and hopefully spark an interest in fishing.”
McCutchan’s students study Iowa fish species found in their regional lakes, and characteristics of the fish. They learn about different fishing baits and lures and make a hypothesis about which lure or bait they could use to catch a specific fish species. McCutchan reminds her students that it’s not always about catching when they go fishing, they need to be aware of lake conditions and weather. After the students’ research is complete, they put their knowledge into practice during a fish outing.
“I want students to experience the outdoors and joys of fishing,” McCutchan said. “Many of my students have never gone fishing, don’t know how to cast a rod, bait a hook, tie a hook/lure on their line, or remove a fish after it’s caught. I get the privilege to teach them these skills.”
McCutchan was presented her award at the Natural Resources Commission meeting in Des Moines on August 8. The Brass Bluegill award has been presented each year since 1996 to an instructor who has established an outstanding local program that exemplifies the goals of Fish Iowa!

Iowa State has been on the rise with consecutive eight-win seasons under coach Matt Campbell.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball will open its 2020 season March 26, its earliest start other than international games. The schedule also features an April series in Puerto Rico between the New York Mets and Miami Marlins. Globe Life Field, the new home of the Texas Rangers, opens March 31. The 2020 regular season is to end Sept. 27, putting the World Series on track to run from Oct. 20-28.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Missouri State volleyball coach Melissa Stokes has resigned after an investigation launched by the university found apparent NCAA violations. The university announced Stokes’ resignation Monday. She will receive an $80,000 severance payment. The university says an investigation concluded that Stokes allowed a “non-qualifier” to accompany the team during a foreign tour without personally paying costs and allowed currently enrolled athletes to participate as campers in Stokes’ volleyball camps.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A legislative committee has delayed a portion of new sports gambling rules that would allow the state to collect some the winnings of those who owe child support, back taxes or criminal debt.
The Iowa Administrative Rules Review Committee on Monday approved a request by the state’s casinos to delay that portion of the rules to allow lawmakers next year to clarify how they want debts collected from sports gambling winnings.
The bill creating sports betting didn’t specify how casinos should collect debts, and the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission rules regulating sports betting were written in a way that casinos say do not meet federal guidelines.
They asked the committee to delay that portion of the rules until lawmakers could draft a bill to conform to federal law. Democratic Sen. Rob Hogg voted against the delay, saying people who owe child support, back taxes or criminal debt to the state should pay up.
Iowa’s legalized sports betting starts Thursday.
