Cranberry-Stuffed Apples (9-25-12)

  • 5 medium apples
  • 1/3 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, thawed and chopped
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, optional

Core apples, leaving bottoms intact.  Peel top third of each apples; place in a 5 quart slow cooker.  Combine the cranberries, brown sugar, walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg; spoon into apples.  Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until apples are tender.  Serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.

Yield:  5 Servings

All-Day Meatballs (9-25-12)

Mom's Tips

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

In a large bowl, combine the first four ingredients.  Crumble the beef over mixture and mix well.  Shape into 1 inch balls.  Place in a 5 quart slow cooker.  In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, water, vinegar and sugar.  Pour over meatballs.  Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until meat is no longer pink.

MARY GERVASE (GERRY) BARRON, 88, of Audubon died on Monday, September 24 at Audubon County Memorial Hospital.  Mass of christian burial for MARY GERVASE (GERRY) BARRON will be held on Thursday, September 27 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon.  Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has arrangements

Family visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 26 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.

More Info About Fatal Woodbine Fight

More information is now available about a fight that occurred on Friday in Woodbine that left one man dead.

The Omaha World Herald reports that Harrison County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a fight taking place in Woodbine between 54-year-old Robert Jablonski and 38-year-old Curtis Jensen.  When deputies arrived, they found Jablonski laying in the street.  He later died from head injuries.

Iowa Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lettie Prell tells the  World Herald that Jensen was on probation after an August conviction for being an offender who provided false information to the sex offender registry.  Although Jensen has not been charged in connection with the fight Friday night, he was being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail suspected of violating his probation.

Two Incidents Reported in Clarinda

The Clarinda Police Department reports two incidents occurred during the past week.

On Monday shortly before 4AM, management at Clarinda West Apartments reported an incident of vandalism to the apartment complex located at 940 S. 27th Street. Various items of graffiti had been drawn on the walls and doors throughout various parts of the building. Damage is estimated at $3,000.00. The incident remains under investigation.

On Wednesday at about 11:50 p.m. officers arrested 33-year-old Justin Allen Williams of Clarinda for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, second offense. Williams was arrested at the intersection of West Garfield Street and Cardinal Drive. Williams was transported to the Page County Jail in lieu of $2,000.00 bail pending an initial appearance before the Page County Magistrate Court.

The Top Workplaces are determined based solely on employee feedback. The survey is conducted by WorkplaceDynamics, LLP, a leading research firm on organizational health and employee engagement.
