JAMES PIERCE, 76, of Atlantic, died Tue., Oct. 2nd, at the Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center. Services for JAMES PIERCE will be held 11-a.m  Sat., Oct. 6th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Perry.  Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Open visitation will be held from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday (10/4), at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, with a family visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. An additional family visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Saturday,from 10:00 am to 11:00-a.m. (prior to the service). Online condolences may be left in the James Pierce guest book, at www.rolandfuneralservice.com, or at www.murdockfuneralhome.net., for the Murdock Funeral Home, in Perry.

Burial in the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.

Chicken in Sour Cream Sauce (10-2-12)

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
  • 6 bone-in chicken breast halves, skin removed
  • 1 can (10 3/4 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 1 cup (8 oz) sour cream
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
  • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced

In a small bowl, combine the first four ingredients; rub over chicken.  Place in a 3 quart slow cooker.  In a large bowl, combine the soup, sour cream and wine or broth; stir in mushrooms.  Pour over chicken.  Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until a meat thermometer reads 170 degrees.  Thicken the sauce if desired.

Slow-Cooked Pork Roast (10-2-12)

  • 2 cans (8 oz each) unsweetened crushed pineapple, undrained
  • 1 cup barbeque sauce
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 boneless pork top loin roast (3 pounds)

In a large saucepan, combine the first nine ingredients.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 3 minutes.  Meanwhile, cut roast in half.  In a non-stick skillet coated with cooking spray, brown the pork roast.  Place the roast in a 5 quart slow cooker.  Pour sauce over roast and turn to coat.  Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours.  Let stand for 15 minutes before carving.

Cass Co. Republican Party HQ to open Wednesday

The Cass County Republican Party has announced the opening of the county Republican headquarters, located at 319 Chestnut St. in downtown Atlantic (formerly the U.S. Army Recruiting Office).  The headquarters will be open beginning on Wednesday, October 3rd.  Its hours of operation will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, and from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays through Election Day.

Yard signs for the candidates will be available for pick-up at the headquarters, in addition to other materials that detail information about the candidates.  A grand opening event is pending.  Contact Party Chairman David Wiederstein at 712-249-8417 for inquiries about the headquarters and for other volunteer opportunities.  The County Party extends a special thanks to the former party chairman, Jim Field, for his assistance in securing the location of the headquarters.

Accident in Pott. County Monday morning injures 2

Two people from Missouri Valley were injured early Monday morning during a rear-end collision on DeSoto Avenue, in Pottawattamie County. Pott. Co. Sheriff’s officials say the accident happened after an animal darted in front of a vehicle driven by 43-year old Teresa Powley, and she slowed to avoid a collision. In the process, her 2011 Chevy SUV was hit from behind by a 2008 Dodge pickup, driven by 57-year old Timothy Thares. The accident happened at around 4:45-a.m., near the bridge over Interstate 29, on DeSoto Avenue. Authorities say the impact spun Powley’s SUV around, and resulted in her being trapped inside the vehicle. The woman was flown by helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center. A report on her condition is not available. Thares was treated at Mercy Hospital, and released.

V.P. Biden to campaign in C.Bluffs, Thursday

Campaign officials say Democrat Vice President Joe Biden will make a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Thursday. The Council Bluffs office of Obama for America (at 1851 Madison Ave., Suite 200) will make tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis for the event, beginning today (Tuesday), at 8-a.m. Only one ticket per person is allowed, and a ticket is necessary for the free event, which will be held at the Mid-America Center. Doors open at 11-a.m. Thursday.
