Open casting call Saturday in Des Moines for movie chronicling last season of six-on-six girls basketball

News, Sports

August 23rd, 2019 by admin

NEW PROVIDENCE, Iowa – An upcoming movie about Iowa’s six-on-six girls basketball could be the big break for anyone hoping to break into show business, particularly high school female basketball players, parents and fans of the game.

Open casting calls are set for this Saturday in Des Moines and next Saturday in Iowa Falls, with producers emphasizing that acting experience and preparation are not needed. The first casting call will be held Saturday at the Des Moines Playhouse lower level, 831 42nd St., from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. The second casting call will be Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Iowa Falls Chamber of Commerce, 520 Rockslyvania Ave, Iowa Falls from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

The movie, “New Providence,” will depict the final season of Iowa’s six-on-six basketball. It’s the story of Jimmy Voss, an often-controversial New York sportswriter sent to a small town in Iowa to cover the final season of the state’s iconic six-on-six high school girls basketball in 1993. What he encounters is a passion for the sport by the coach and team and an undying love for the small town. When he allows himself to enter into their world, Voss discovers that being sent to New Providence, Iowa may have been the best day of his life.

The screenplay’s author, Jack Smith, moved to New Providence himself in 1993 to run a business and quickly became a student of the unique game. Fearless Cinema, LLC is developing the script and producing the film.

“Being a basketball and history junkie, I soon learned that in Iowa, girls six-on-six basketball was what high school football is to Texas and boy’s high school basketball is to Indiana,” said Smith, who interviewed players, coaches and fans, poured over articles about the sport and watched hours of game video as he wrote his work. “Six-on-six basketball was very special and a small town’s status and spirit was often based on how far its girls’ team advanced in the state tournament.”

Audubon hosts East Mills in Week 0 gridiron tilt on KJAN

Sports

August 22nd, 2019 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers open up their 2019 football season Friday night with a Week 0 match-up against the East Mills Wolverines. The game came about shortly before both teams were set to open up camp. East Mills had already lost a game off their schedule with Stanton and Essex sharing a program for this season. Then Clarinda Academy announced they would not be fielding a team for the season just a few weeks ago. East Mills Head Coach Kevin Schafer said they were then scrambling to find another game to add. The Wolverines were turned down by a couple of schools they reached out to, then had a possibility with a school on the Eastern side of the state but decided that commute was too much. Then Audubon stepped up and agreed to the early season game.

The game will feature two teams that narrowly missed the playoffs last year. The Wolverines went 7-2 with losses to district opponents Stanton and Fremont-Mills. Audubon went 6-3 with losses to Fremont-Mills, Exira-EHK, and CAM.

The Wolverines return star quarterback Michael Schafer and a few other nice pieces. Schafer threw for 2,003 yards and 28 touchdowns with 10 interceptions last year. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks said the Wheelers will need to wreak some havoc up front and make Schafer uncomfortable.

The Wheelers will counter with a quarterback coming off a nice season as well, Skyler Schultes. He racked up 954 yards passing with 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and added 1,136 yards rushing with 26 more scores. Wolverines Head Coach Kevin Schafer knows the Wolverines will need to try to slow that run game down.

Coach Birks said the Wheelers hope to work the power run game again this season but also hope to take some of the load off of Schultes.

The Wheelers and Wolverines will tee it up at Chiz Jones Field at 7:00pm on Friday night. We’ll start our coverage with the Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30pm. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on the air, online, and on the web app. You can also catch live video on KJAN TV. Go to kjan.com then click KJAN Video Network under the Community Hub. ST. LOUIS, Mo., August 22, 2019 – Today the St. Louis Cardinals, in conjunction with Cardinals Care, the City of Pagedale and Beyond Housing, announced the dedication of Matt Carpenter Field at the Pagedale Family Resource Center in Pagedale, Missouri.

Cardinals Team President Bill DeWitt III, was joined at the dedication by Cardinals Infielder, Matt Carpenter, Cardinals Vice President of Community Relations & Executive Director of Cardinals Care, Michael Hall; Cardinals Care Director & Youth Baseball Commissioner, Keith Brooks; Mayor of Pagedale, Mary Carter, and Beyond Housing Chief Operating Officer, Deb Dombar.

The professionally designed field is the result of a six-figure investment by Cardinals Care that includes a graded and irrigated playing field, two paved and covered dugouts, bleachers, fencing, and a state-of-the art solar powered scoreboard.  The field will play an integral role in teaching Redbird Rookies participants the values of teamwork, integrity, self-esteem, and leadership.

Matt Carpenter Field is the 24th field dedicated by Cardinals Care since its inception in 1997.  Most recently, the Cardinals dedicated Dexter Fowler Field in August, 2017, at Hess Park in Decatur, Ill.  Carpenter and his wife, Mackenzie, have been long time supporters of Cardinals Care and the St. Louis community.

This season marks the 16th year of Cardinals Care’s innovative Redbird Rookies program, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play.  In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 2,500 kids who participate in the program each year

Brewers knock Cardinals out of 1st place with 5-3 win

Sports

August 22nd, 2019 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Moustakas stopped short of calling Milwaukee’s rain-shortened victory over the St. Louis Cardinals a must win.

“But it was pretty important,” he said.

Moustakas homered and Keston Hiura drove in a pair of runs to lead the reeling Brewers to just their third win in the last nine, 5-3 over the Cardinals on Wednesday night.

The game was stopped after 7 1/2 innings and made official following a rain delay of 66 minutes.

Milwaukee broke a six-game losing streak against the Cardinals, who were knocked out of first place in the NL Central — falling one-half game behind the Cubs. Chicago beat San Francisco 12-11.

The Brewers are in third, 3 1/2 behind the Cubs.

Milwaukee lost four of the first five in the six-game trip including the opening two of the three-game set to the Cardinals.

“It was a tough trip, but we ended on a good note,” manager Craig Counsell said.

Adrian Houser (6-5) gave up three runs — one earned — and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. It marked the third straight start he’s allowed just one earned run. Houser struck out six and walked two.

“You lose those first two, but you make some ground up by getting that last one,” Houser said. “We (didn’t) get swept, it’s a big step.”

Junior Guerra got the last out in the bottom of the seventh and earned his third save.

Moustakas, who also walked three times, hit a three-run homer in the first off Adam Wainwright (9-9) to highlight a four-run outburst. Hiura had run-scoring hits in the first and fourth innings for a 5-0 lead.

“He made a really good pitch and I got lucky,” Moustakas said of his 31st homer of the season. “I was able to stay back just enough and get the barrel to the ball.”

Wainwright gave up five runs and eight hits over five innings.

“I had horrible fastball command,” Wainwright said. “Did not have good stuff and was just out there trying to battle.”

The Brewers needed just 17 pitches to go in front 4-0 as five of the first six hitters had hits.

“Great first inning,” Counsell said. “That was the game for us offensively.”

Moustakas added: “This offense, we can break out at any time. We put together some really good at-bats early in the game.”

St. Louis capitalized on a pair of errors to climb to 5-2 in the fifth. Yadier Molina’s double brought the Cardinals to 5-3 in the sixth.

UP NEXT
Brewers: RHP Jordan Lyles (7-8, 4.96 ERA) will face Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (9-12, 4.63) on Friday in the first of a three-game series in Milwaukee. Lyles has a 7.23 ERA in 20 career games against Arizona. He is making his fifth start for the Brewers after being acquired from Pirrtsburgh in exchange for RHP Cody Ponce on July 29.
Cardinals: RHP Miles Mikolas (7-13) squares off against Colorado RHP German Marquez (12-5, 4.71 ERA) on Thursday in the first of a four-game set in St. Louis. Mikolas is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in four career appearances vs the Rockies.

More experience and confidence for Atlantic Volleyball team in new season

Sports

August 22nd, 2019 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Volleyball team has more confidence and higher expectations heading into Michelle Blake’s 2nd year as Head Coach. The Trojans graduated a few valuable seniors off of last year’s squad but a lot of underclassmen got a lot of playing time last year on a youthful team. That year of experience and a strong summer working together has the Trojans shooting for loftier goals this season. Coach Blake said the girls set their own goals for the season, which included racking up multiple conference wins.

Atlantic returns setter Haley Rasmussen, who had 429 assists last year, and kills leader Alyssa Derby (180). Coach Blake expects them to take on even more of a leadership role this season, starting with Rasmussen.

The Trojans are coming off an 8-28 season in 2018. The Trojans were close in a number of matches last year but fell short more often than not in those tight sets and matches. Coach Blake said the team has shown signs of flipping that scenario this season during summer play.

Atlantic will hold their Trojan night scrimmage on the 27th and then open up regular season play on the 31st at the AHSTW Invitational. You can hear the full interview with Coach Blake on our first week of the fall Saturday Morning Coaches Show on August 31st at 8:30am.

Fowler drives in 4 runs in Cardinals 9-2 win over Brewers

Sports

August 21st, 2019 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dexter Fowler was focused more on his team getting a win rather than his own production.

Fowler hit a bases-loaded double and drove in four runs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals past the Milwaukee Brewers 9-4 on Tuesday night in the second game of the series between NL Central contenders.

“It’s awesome to win games like this,” Fowler said. “Any time you get division wins against a top-tier team in your division, that’s a plus.”

Tyler Webb (1-1) earned his first major-league victory with one-third inning of work in his 79th career game. He struck out pitch-hitter Ben Gamel on four pitches. Six

Cardinals combined to throw 170 pitches in the game.

The Cardinals have won nine of their last 11 games, while the Brewers have lost six of their last eight. St. Louis remained in first place by a half-game over the Chicago Cubs, who beat San Francisco 5-3. Third-place Milwaukee is four games back.

St. Louis broke the game open with a four-run sixth against three Milwaukee relievers. Jeremy Jeffress (3-4) loaded the bases. Alex Claudio came in and struck out Kolten Wong. Junior Guerra entered and walked Harrison Bader, who was recalled earlier in the day. After striking out pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter, Fowler hit a 3-2 pitch into short left field that fell between three Brewers for a double and a 5-2 lead.

“That was a huge play play,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “I knew it had a chance and that it was falling fast. We got the carousel going. And we kept adding on from there.”

The Brewers believed the ball should have been caught.

“That was a tough ball to get to but I think we need to make that play,” Milwaukee shortstop Orlando Arcia said. “I think that was the play of the game. If we make that play, everything changes. Somebody has to call that ball.”

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell agreed.

“Fowler just hit it between our guys,” Counsell said. “We didn’t catch the ball and they scored a bunch of runs. Three guys going for it and nobody could get to it.”

Wong hit a two-run single in the seventh, making it 7-2. The Cardinals added two more runs when Fowler and Tommy Edman drew bases-loaded walks.

Milwaukee went ahead 2-1 in the sixth. A two-out, run-scoring single by Eric Thames off reliever John Gant was charged to rookie Ryan Helsley, who pitched 1 1/3 innings.

Gant allowed back-to-back singles by Hernan Perez and Orlando Arcia for the second run before giving way to Webb.

Yadier Molina drove in the Cardinals’ first run, scoring Marcell Ozuna in the fourth. St. Louis then loaded the bases with two outs. Lane Thomas hit for starter Michael Wacha but flew out to center.

“That’s life in the National League I guess,” Wacha said. “You don’t know how many opportunities you’ll get in a game and that was his decision to make. Obviously, I was feeling good out there.”

Wacha struck out five, allowing three hits and a walk in throwing 73 pitches.

Milwaukee scored its final two runs in the eighth.

UP NEXT
Brewers: Adrian Houser (5-5, 3.76) Houser is 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in three career games against St. Louis. His April 22 start this season in St. Louis resulted in a 13-5 in which Houser went four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, including two home runs.
Cardinals: Adam Wainwright (9-8, 4.33) has nine career home victories over the Brewers are his most against any opponent and his 16 wins overall against Milwaukee are tied for tied for first (with Cubs) for his most wins against any opponent.
