Iowa’s Rick Heller on the status of leading hitter Keaton Anthony

Sports

May 10th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller is not sure if leading hitter Keaton Anthony will be back in the lineup on Friday when the Hawkeyes open a three game series at home against Michigan State. Anthony was one of a handful of baseball players benched for last weekend’s series against Ohio State as the University investigates gambling allegations involving more than two dozen athletes. Anthony leads the Big Ten in hitting with a .463 average and has driven in 19 runs in 14 conference games.

Heller says the Hawkeyes are preparing as if they won’t have Anthony in the lineup.

Heller says he is confident in how the University investigation is handling it.

Losing an All-American during a stretch run is a tough break but Heller believes the Hawkeyes are still a team that can make a run to an NCAA Regional.

Without Anthony in the lineup the Hawkeyes still managed to take two of three games from Ohio State.

The Hawkeyes are 10-7 in the Big Ten and 34-12 overall.

Governor signs bill to let physician assistants practice independently

News

May 10th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa will no longer require experienced physician assistants — known as P-As — to be work under the direct supervision of doctor in order to practice medicine. P-As who are newly licensed, though, will have to have an agreement with a supervising doctor for two years before they may practice independently. Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill making those changes into law today (Wednesday).

“This is a game changer for rural hospitals and it really makes a difference to be able to provide that access to Iowans who need it,” Reynolds says. “We want to make sure that we do everything we can to maintain health care in rural Iowa.” Over half of the licensed P-As in Iowa today are working in rural communities. Representative Josh Turek, of Council Bluffs, says about 40 percent of the P-As who graduate in Iowa, though, leave to practice elsewhere. “Allowing the PAs to operate independently I think will lead us to keeping more of our PAs here as we are the Harvard of the PAs,” Turek says.

The first class of P-As graduated from the University of Iowa in 1974. The P-A program at Des Moines University has been operating nearly four decades. In the past decade, St. Ambrose University in Davenport and the University of Dubuque started P-A training programs. The P-A program at Northwestern College in Orange City started in 2020.

May 10th, 2023 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser announced the addition of Cody Chittum to the program Wednesday afternoon. Chittum was ranked as the No. 1 pound-for-pound high school prospect by FloWrestling after the 2021-22 season.

Chittum brings an impressive list of credentials to Ames. The projected 157-pounder has won Who’s Number One, Super 32 – one of the country’s most prestigious high school wrestling events – and a junior freestyle national title.

The Tennessee native also took fourth at the U20 men’s freestyle world team trials and won gold at the Junior Pan-American Games in Colombia last year. Wrestling unattached, Chittum reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 Southern Scuffle before suffering a high-ankle sprain and medically forfeiting out of the tournament.

Chittum spent his freshman high school season at Blair Academy where he was a Beast of the East champion and a National Prep runner-up. As the pandemic hit, Chittum stayed in Tennessee and enrolled at Cleveland High School, where he won a state title in 2021.

Most recently, Chittum competed on the senior level freestyle circuit and medaled in three events. He earned silver at the Bill Farrell and bronze medals at the Henri Deglane and Egypt Ranking Series.

State income tax refunds up $107 million through end of April

News

May 10th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A report on tax collections since July 1st of 2022 shows state revenue is up nearly two percent compared to the previous 10 month period. In March, the State Revenue Estimating Conference predicted state tax revenue would drop by half a percent this fiscal year. The uptick in ACTUAL tax receipts happened despite the state paying out 107 million dollars MORE in state income tax refunds than it did through the end of April last year.

Jeff Robinson of the Legislative Services Agency says there’s been a bit of a slow down in overall state tax collections since April 3rd, though. That includes a dip in sales tax payments to the state. Iowans who filed their 2022 STATE income tax returns by May 1st and are owed a refund should get it within the next two weeks according to Robinson.
