It was Kuemper Catholic over Atlantic in 3 games Monday night. The scores were 25-8, 25-5, 25-8.

Coach Chris Jahnke’s Comments: After playing much improved on Saturday we thought we would play well tonight. For some reason we take the floor at home in our gym and we look scared and intimidated by whoever we face. We did not look good in any facet of the game. All season long we have struggled to find 6 consistent players that can hold their own and compete for an entire match. We have an entire team of capable players but we have not been able to come out and perform and sustain momentum. We are quite capable of playing good volleyball and at times we do. The team has to convince themselves that they can do it. We as coaches believe in them and try hard to help them see their potential for themselves. I thought our seniors played their hearts out. I have been proud of this group for showing up each day and staying positive and together. If ever a group deserved to win it is this group.

Iowa harvest nearly complete

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa farmers are close to wrapping up this year’s harvest as much needed rain finally fell across most of the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 87 percent of the corn crop has been harvested, which is a month ahead of schedule. Ninety-three percent of the soybean crop is in from the fields, which is three weeks ahead of normal. The USDA says in Monday’s report that rain over the weekend helped Iowa’s pasture and range land. Hay supplies are running short across 41 percent of the state. Calves are being weaned and sold early due to the short supply of winter hay. The statewide average rainfall last week was 1.65 inches, triple the normal for the week. It was Iowa’s wettest week since early May.

Giants beat Cardinals 7-1 in Game 2 to even NLCS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Marco Scutaro bounced back from Matt Holliday’s hard slide by delivering a big hit of his own that helped the San Francisco Giants get their first home win this postseason, 7-1 over St. Louis on Monday night that tied the NL championship series at 1-all. The game got off to a testy start when Holliday barreled into Scutaro at second base to break up a potential double play in the first inning. The play riled up a crowd that had seen three straight losses by the Giants so far in the playoffs.

There was plenty to cheer all night for the Giants. Ryan Vogelsong pitched seven strong innings, Angel Pagan hit a leadoff homer and Scutaro hit a two-run single off Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter that broke the game open in a four-run fourth. Scutaro left after five innings because of an injured left hip, and was going for X-rays.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has taken custody of a man charged with killing a 5-year-old girl in 2005. State agents took custody yesterday of 33-year-old Casey Frederiksen from a federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill. He’s charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual abuse in the death of 5-year-old Evelyn Miller. He’ll make an initial court appearance tomorrow.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. attorney’s office in Cedar Rapids has set up a telephone line and a website page for victims in the case against Iowa investment broker Russell Wasendorf Sr. A district judge approved the procedure under a law that says victims of federal crime are entitled to notification of certain court proceedings. The 64-year-old CEO of Peregrine Financial Group pleaded guilty last month to misspending investor funds over a 20-year-old period.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The public is being given more time to comment on Iowa’s livestock proposals. The Environmental Protection Agency says it’s extending the comment period until the end of the month. The proposals would change the state’s regulations of livestock operations to be in compliance with the federal Clean Water Act.

Study focuses on Missouri River vulnerabilities

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study says more research and monitoring are needed to reduce the likelihood of damage along the Missouri River in future floods. The study released Monday focuses on remaining vulnerabilities after the Missouri River rose to record levels last year. The 2011 flooding began after the corps started releasing massive amounts of water from upstream reservoirs filled by melting snow and heavy rain.

Most repairs to damaged levees in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri are expected to be finished before next spring, with work on the river’s dams expected to take longer. Numerous studies are in the works, including ones that explore whether climate change played a role in the 2011 flooding.

Okla St deciding on QB for Iowa St game

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy still isn’t sure who the Cowboys’ starting quarterback will be against Iowa State. Gundy said Monday that Wes Lunt, who suffered a knee injury on Sept. 15, is “day-to-day” but has started working with the Cowboys’ starters in practice. Backup J.W. Walsh, who’s started three games in Lunt’s absence, also is getting work in with Oklahoma State’s first team. Gundy says Iowa State (4-2, 1-2 Big 12 Conference) will have to prepare for both quarterbacks.

Whoever start Saturday, Oklahoma State (3-2, 1-1) is looking to improve upon an anemic performance in a 20-14 win over Kansas, in which the Cowboys managed just 371 yards of offense.

KAY JUHL, 65, of Atlantic died Monday, October 15th at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.  Funeral services for KAY JUHL will be held on Thursday, October 18th at 10:30 am in the Hockenberry Family Care Chapel in Atlantic.

Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 18th from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.

Burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.

KAY JUHL is survived by:

Daughters:  Lisa (Dick) Schnackel of Crescent; Amy (Wade) Jessen of Anita; Cindy (Steve) Brownsberger of Adel; Jody (Eric) Stoll of Lake Park; Jane (Donnie) Ward of Lewis.

Brothers:  Jim (Priscilla) Foster of California; Jack Foster of California.

Sister:  Virginia (Verlyn) Berg of Rock Rapids

TEDDY J. WESTON, 79 of Grant died Sunday, October 14th  at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.  Funeral services for TEDDY J. WESTON will be held  on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Grant United Methodist Church.  Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca is in charge of arrangements.
