DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines school officials say a suspended high school football coach broke policies for bullying, harassment and corporal punishment in an incident involving a former player. The Des Moines Register says school district investigators also concluded that Lincoln High coach Tom Mihalovich violated conduct rules. The report, dated Oct. 1st, says Mihalovich forced the player to submit to bullying, harassment and excessive conditioning drills after the player posted a message blasting the team on Twitter on Aug. 31st. Mihalovich has been on paid administrative suspension since Sept. 4. Two assistant coaches are also suspended. The coach’s attorney, Marc Ward, says Mihalovich is “stunned by many of the assertions” in the report and questions its release as “legally and ethically unacceptable” since the process is still ongoing.

Jones expected to try pushing bobsled

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Olympic hurdler and Iowa native Lolo Jones is going to try bobsleds. For at least one day, anyway. The 30-year old is among a group of Olympic track athletes who were invited and are expected to compete in the U.S. women’s bobsled push championships Friday. Jones created a buzz earlier this week when she challenged former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand to a race on Twitter, saying afterward she did not know LeGrand had a serious spinal cord injury in 2010. LeGrand said he did not take it personally.

Jones finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at the London Olympics in August amid criticism that she receives more attention and endorsements than her results warrant. Four years earlier in Beijing, the American came in as the favorite and was in position to win gold when she hit the ninth of 10 hurdles and wound up seventh.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have what has become an unsettling weekly routine. Coach Romeo Crennel sits down with reporters and says: “All right, I’m going to start with our injuries.” And then he starts his roll call. Peyton Hillis, out with an ankle injury. Glenn Dorsey a calf injury. Jon Baldwin, Jalil Brown and Devon Wylie all have hamstring trouble. Derrick Johnson has a sore groin, Ropati Pitoitua an elbow injury, Kendrick Lewis an ailing shoulder and Ryan Lilja a bad back. It’s not the way the Chiefs (1-3) want to head into Sundays’ game against Baltimore.

UNDATED (AP) — TCU quarterback Casey Pachall has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Coach Gary Patterson announced the suspension Thursday morning, hours after police say Pachall was pulled over for running a stop sign near TCU’s Fort Worth campus. In February, Pachall admitted to police that he smoked marijuana and failed a drug test two weeks before his roommate was arrested in a sting operation. The 15th-ranked Horned Frogs, who are 4-0, host Iowa State on Saturday.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Council Bluffs construction office say lane restrictions will be in place on westbound Interstate 80 over the South Expressway in Council Bluffs, to allow crews to remove and replace the back wall on the South Expressway bridge. Work on the project will begin 7-p.m. Friday, Oct. 5th, and continue until 8- a.m. Monday, Oct. 8th, weather permitting. Work is being scheduled for the weekend to minimize traffic delays on I-80.

Motorists may want to select the South Omaha Bridge Road (U.S. 275) or I-680 to I-29 east of the metro area as alternate routes. Construction work will continue on the weekends for up to four weeks until the project has been completed. The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limits and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.

Former Iowa, Nebraska pastor sentenced

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A former minister convicted of three sexual assault charges in Council Bluffs will be resentenced on one of them, now that the Iowa Appeals Court has lowered the severity of one of his crimes. 57-year-old Efrain Umana had been convicted in January 2011 of second-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sexual abuse and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. Umana, who had led churches in Iowa and Nebraska, was given 35 years in prison. Umana had appealed the convictions, and in its ruling issued Wednesday, the Appeals Court said prosecutors didn’t present enough evidence of specific intent to commit sexual abuse. The court returned the case to district court for resentencing on a reduced assault charge.
