Chiefs offense a no-show the last 2 games

Sports

October 17th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The struggling offense of the Kansas City Chiefs has more than a quarterback controversy to work on this week. The Chiefs (1-5) have not scored a touchdown in the last eight quarters while losing 9-6 to Baltimore and getting blown out 38-10 at Tampa Bay. Here’s how bad it was for offensive coordinator Brian Daboll last week in Tampa: When the Chiefs had the ball, the Buccaneers outscored them 7-3. Trying to get the offense back on track is a big priority for the Chiefs during their bye week.

LAUGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) — Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith is planning to auction his 13 Gold Gloves and a pair of World Series rings he received from the St. Louis Cardinals in retirement. SCP Auctions said Tuesday that bidding for the online sale will start Nov. 14 and end Dec. 1. SCP said Smith decided on the auction, which also includes 11 All-Star game rings, as part of estate and family planning.

In a separate sale, bidding began Tuesday at Goldin Auctions for Pete Rose’s copy of the 1990 agreement in which he agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball following an investigation of his gambling while manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Bidding runs through Nov. 17th.

Cardinals back home for NLCS Game 3 against Giants

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kyle Lohse is all about efficiency, about avoiding extended at-bats and letting the hitters get themselves out. The St. Louis Cardinals are in a spot where they could really use that kind of game. The 16-game winner can pitch his team to the lead today (Wednesday), with the NL championship series against the San Francisco Giants tied 1-1.

St. Louis has gone three straight games without a starter getting an out in the fifth inning. Lohse gets a chance to end that troubling trend when he faces Matt Cain in a matchup of 16-game winners. The game carries more of the usual Game 3 buzz due to the uncertainty of Marco Scutaro’s availability after getting rammed by Matt Holliday while busting up a double play on Monday night. A person with knowledge of the injury told the Associated Press that Scutaro strained his left hip.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A homecoming celebration has been scheduled for 30 members of the Iowa Air National Guard. The guard says the airmen from the 132nd Fighter Wing in De Moines are scheduled to return tomorrow morning. The airmen have been in Southeast Asia for the past six months.

CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a young woman and a girl were injured when their horse-drawn Amish buggy collided with a semitrailer in southern Iowa. The Appanoose County sheriff’s office says the buggy was heading east on a rural road yesterday morning. The horse unexpectedly moved to the left and pulled the buggy into the path of a westbound truck. The truck driver wasn’t injured. It’s unclear what happened to the horse.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say thieves are scaling great heights in Iowa in the search for copper. Pottawattamie County officials say the thieves are yanking wiring from cellphone towers and wind turbines. Sheriff Jeff Danker says the thieves are risking jail or death for a few dollars.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The National League Championship Series is coming to St. Louis for the seventh time since 2000, and the city is clearing some parking space. The Cardinals and Giants split the first two games in San Francisco. The next three games are in St. Louis Wednesday through Friday. If necessary, the final two games would be back in California. Today’s (Wednesday’s) game is scheduled to start shortly after 3 p.m. Central time. City Treasurer Larry Williams says overtime parking violations will not be enforced at meters in parts of downtown near Busch Stadium — specifically in the area bounded by Tucker, Chouteau, Locust and the Mississippi River. All other regulations will be enforced.

It’s back to work for surging Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Bill O’Brien allowed himself to relax a little for his first weekend without a football game in nearly two months — but only briefly. After taking his wife out for a nice dinner, it was back to the work early the next day for Penn State’s coach. Following an off week, the Nittany Lions want to keep the momentum of a four-game winning streak rolling into this weekend’s tough trip to Iowa. Both teams enter this weekend’s tilt with identical records (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten). A win Saturday for Penn State, coupled with a victory by No. 7 Ohio State over Purdue, would set up a high-stakes showdown on Oct. 27 for first place in the Leaders Division. But the Nittany Lions vow they’re only concentrating on Iowa.
