WASHINGTON (AP) — Doesn’t matter how bad things look for the St. Louis Cardinals. Trailing by a bunch, down to their last strike, they simply stay calm and do what it takes to win. Erasing an early six-run hole in Game 5 slowly but surely, the defending World Series champion Cardinals got a tying two-out, two-run single from Daniel Descalso and a go-ahead two-run single from Pete Kozma in the ninth inning and came all the way back to beat the Washington Nationals 9-7 Friday night and win their NL division series. It was the largest comeback ever in a winner-take-all postseason game, according to STATS LLC. No other club in this sort of ultimate pressure situation had come back from more than four down.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — One woman has been injured before fleeing with her sister and four children from a house fire in Waterloo. Nineteen-year-old Iesha Coffer says she was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom just before noon Thursday when she was awakened by heat and soon noticed the fire. Damage from the fire was estimated at $15,000.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A former prison guard at the state prison in Fort Dodge is accused of providing contraband to an inmate and performing a sex act on him. Thirty-five-year-old Rhiannon Quintana of Fort Dodge, Iowa is charged with providing electronic contraband and sexual misconduct with an inmate. AMES, Iowa (AP) — The matchup of the year in Big 12 appears to be just a little over a week away, when sixth-ranked Kansas State travels to face 5th ranked West Virginia. The unbeaten Wildcats first need to beat Iowa State in Ames, and the Cyclones aren’t the pushover they used to be. ISU knocked off then 3rd ranked Oklahoma State in Ames last year.

Spartans hoping for faster start against Iowa

Sports

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — When Michigan State beat Iowa last season, the Spartans led 31-7 at halftime. That kind of fast start has been nowhere to be found lately. Michigan State hasn’t led after two quarters in more than a month. The Spartans (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will try to reverse that trend Saturday when they host the Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-0) in a crucial matchup in the Big Ten’s Legends Division. Iowa is one of two teams in the division that hasn’t dripped a conference game yet. Michigan State rallied from an early deficit to beat Indiana last weekend, but it was a struggle. The Spartans began the season with Rose Bowl aspirations, but it’s still hard to get a sense of where they stand in a jumbled league race that’s still taking shape.

Ark. woman admits guilt in sex trafficking ring

News

October 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Arkansas woman has pleaded guilty to helping run a violent nationwide sex trafficking ring that solicited customers for prostitutes as young as age 17. Brittany Lawson, of Hot Springs, pleaded guilty Friday to conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking in federal court in Council Bluffs. She faces a lengthy prison term when she is sentenced because the charge carries a maximum of life in prison. But prosecutors agreed any recommended sentence should be shortened because she was under the coercion of co-defendant Johnelle Bell, described as a violent New Jersey pimp and mastermind of the ring. Bell has pleaded not guilty and faces trial next month. Lawson admitted that she posted ads on backpage.com soliciting customers in Iowa and elsewhere, recruited prostitutes, secured rental cars and rented motel rooms.
