DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa investigators are looking into absentee ballot problems in Muscatine and Floyd counties. Officials say they appear to center on voters receiving ballots without having signed a request form. More than 624,000 absentee ballots have been mailed to Iowa voters. More than 470,000 have been returned.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton will campaign for President Barack Obama this week in Iowa. Clinton will also hold events in Minnesota and Wisconsin to partially fill a void for the president, who will be in Washington dealing with Hurricane Sandy.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A businessman from Indiana has pleaded guilty to ripping off an Iowa company in a fraud scheme. Lowell Hancher admits he abused his position on the board of Spencer-based manufacturing company Cycle Country to misappropriate more than $500,000 for himself under a phony stock buyback program. He also admits defrauding Iowa investors in a Colorado construction company.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An explosion blew out windows and caused a fire at a house in Des Moines this morning. A fire inspector says it happened when a woman who needs an oxygen tank when she sleeps left it on after she woke up and then lit a cigarette. The woman, her grandson and the family dog all escaped. The home has at least $50,000 damage.

PHYLLIS JEAN OLSEN, 80, of Elk Horn (formerly of Atlantic), died Sun., Oct. 28th, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. Funeral services for PHYLLIS OLSEN will be held 1:30-p.m. Fri., Nov. 2nd, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family is from 6-8pm Thu., Nov. 1st, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and/or the Salem Lutheran Home.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery at 4-p.m. Friday (11/2).

PHYLLIS OLSEN is survived by:

Her husband – G. Wayne Olsen, of Atlantic.

Her children – Steve (Laura) Olsen, of Marne; Gary (Linda) Olsen, of Atlantic; Carol (Todd) Swenson, of Bloomington, MN, and Keith (Barb) Olsen, of Atlantic.

Her brothers – Norman (Dorothy) Henricksen, of Atlantic, and Dale Henricksen, of Audubon.

Her sisters – Ardyth (Marvin) Laursen, of Muscatine, and Marilyn Hash, of Brigham, UT.

and 11 grandchildren.

Weekend accident under investigation

Sheriff’s officials in Cass County are investigating the circumstances surrounding a property damage accident that happened early Saturday morning, when a pickup struck a utility pole. Authorities report the Cass County Communication Center received a call at around 2:05 a.m.,  of a one-vehicle accident on 540th Street. When deputies arrived, the driver of a 2006 Chevy Silverado pickup, 45-year old Danny Leroy Lewis,  of Red Oak, was no where to be found.

Officials later learned he had walked away from the scene of the crash, and was transported by private vehicle to the Cass County Memorial Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

Assault and other arrests reported in Atlantic

A Pottawattamie County man was arrested Friday on an assault charge in Cass County. Sheriff’s officials say 53-year old Joseph Anthony Hardin, of Hancock, was taken into custody on a Cass County warrant for Aggravated Assault. Hardin was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

Sheriff’s officials said also,54-year old William Clarence Shearer, of Atlantic, was arrested Oct. 23rd, on a District Court Warrant for Violation of Probation. Shearer was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $5000 bond. And, on October 18th, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 34-year old Michael Lee Moller,  of Griswold, on a Cass County warrant for Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree (D Fel). Moller was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on $5000 bond.

Atlantic woman arrested on drug charge

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, that an Atlantic woman was arrested last week, on a drug charge. 54-year old Mary Helen Adams was arrested October 25th, on a charge of Possession of Controlled Substance (Meth) (Serious Misdemeanor). Adams was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $1000 bond.

Chiefs QB Quinn being evaluated for concussion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn is being evaluated for a possible concussion and his status for Thursday night’s game at San Diego remains uncertain.  Coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Quinn will start against the Chargers if he’s cleared to play. Otherwise, Matt Cassel will be back under center for the Chiefs.

Quinn was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday’s 26-16 loss to the Oakland Raiders, though it’s unclear when the injury occurred. He was sacked by Rolando McClain late in the first quarter and then took another shot while floating a pass that was picked by Matt Giordano.

Crennel said that Quinn wasn’t at the practice facility Monday while he underwent tests, and Cassel would run the first-team offense during a walk-through practice.

Shelby County Fire Danger “Moderate” through Thursday

The Shelby County Emergency Management Agency has upgraded the Fire Danger Index in the County, to “Moderate.” The index had been in the “Low” category last week, but Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Seivert says winds and drying conditions this week will increase the risk for field and grassland fires.

Man arrested on Open container charge

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 34-year old David Francis Hughes, Jr., of Red Oak, was arrested Sunday evening. Hughes was cited for having an open container in a vehicle, as a passenger. He was subsequently released on the citation.
