Sports

September 8th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will McElvain threw for three touchdowns as Northern Iowa rolled past Southern Utah 34-14 on Saturday. McElvain had 262 yards passing for the Panthers (1-1). Trevor Allen ran for 77 yards on 17 carries.

McElvain hit Deion McShane for a 56-yard touchdown late in the first quarter and followed up early in the second with a 39-yard scoring throw to Isaiah Weston. Matthew Cook’s 45-yard field goal made it 17-0 with 7:54 left in the half and a 10-yard strike from McElvain to Jaylin James capped the first-half scoring with the Panthers up 24-0.

Cook added a 27-yard field goal to make it 27-0 early in the third quarter and later Nick McCabe ran for a score and the Panthers were up 34-0. Southern Utah scored late in the third on a 4-yard Chris Helbig run to close to 34-7 but failed to capitalize on two consecutive fumble recoveries in the fourth. Helbig managed another short touchdown run just before the end of the game for the final score.

Helbig finished with 126 yards passing for the Thunderbirds (0-2).

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer to break out of his slump and Adam Wainwright pitched seven strong innings, helping the St. Louis Cardinals maintain their lead atop the NL Central with a 10-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ozuna hit his 26th homer. The cleanup hitter also walked twice after having two hits in his 35 at-bats. Wainwright helped himself with a double and single while lasting seven innings for the second straight start.

MIAMI (AP) — Ryan McBroom doubled twice and had three RBI and the Kansas City Royals beat the Miami Marlins 7-2. McBroom’s bases-clearing double off Miami reliever Ryne Stanek in the seventh capped a six-run seventh inning. Jorge Soler hit his 41st homer, a solo blast in the ninth, and Hunter Dozier had two hits for the Royals, who have won six of seven.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit to beat No. 25 Nebraska 34-31 in overtime. The Buffs and Cornhuskers combined for 38 fourth-quarter points. Colorado took its first lead on James Stefanou’s 34-yard field goal and won it when punter Isaac Armstrong didn’t come close on a 49-yarder with the Huskers’ regular kicker out with an injury.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 20 Iowa rolled past Rutgers 30-0 in its Big Ten opener. New Jersey native Ihmir Smith-Marsette caught two TD passes for the Hawkeyes, who’ve allowed just 14 points in two games ahead of next week’s rivalry showdown at No. 25 Iowa State.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kelly Bryant threw three touchdown passes, Missouri held rebuilding West Virginia to 171 yards of total offense, and the Tigers rolled to a 38-7 victory in their home opener. Albert Okwuegbunam had two touchdown grabs. Larry Rountree added 99 yards and a score on the ground. Nick Bolton had a pair of interceptions and returned the second for a fourth-quarter touchdown. West Virginia’s lone TD came in late in the game.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Malik Knowles had 99 receiving yards and two touchdown catches and Skylar Thompson threw for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Kansas State beat Bowling Green 52-0 on Saturday afternoon.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A two-touchdown performance by CJ Marable fueled Coastal Carolina to a slim 12-7 victory over Kansas despite the heavily-anticipated return of Pooka Williams Jr.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State has announced a $105 million capital improvement project that includes a large renovation of Bill Snyder Family Stadium and additional projects to help other athletic programs. The school already has raised $69 million for the work, which will begin in May.

No. 20 Iowa rolls past Rutgers 30-0, Stanley throws 3 TDs

Sports

September 7th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 20 Iowa rolled past Rutgers 30-0 on Saturday in its Big Ten opener. New Jersey native Ihmir Smith-Marsette caught two TD passes for the Hawkeyes (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who’ve allowed just 14 points in two games ahead of next week’s rivalry showdown at No. 25 Iowa State.

Stanley found Smith-Marsette and Tyrone Tracy for first-half touchdowns to help Iowa take a 20-0 lead at the break. Stanley then connected with Smith-Marsette from 23 yards out to make it 27-0. Smith-Marsette finished with 113 yards receiving. Iowa’s defense smothered Rutgers (1-1, 0-1), which scored 48 points in its opener over UMass. The Scarlet Knights gained just 125 yards, punted 10 times and turned it over three times.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa: Rutgers has yet to beat a ranked league opponent since joining the Big Ten, so it’s not as though the Hawkeyes faced a ton of resistance. Still, Iowa’s defense crippled the Scarlet Knights from their opening drive, and the 97-yard touchdown drive the Hawkeyes put together in the second quarter was a good sign for their surging offense.
Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights thought they had found their quarterback when McLane Carter threw for 340 yards last week. But Rutgers made the switch back to Artur Sitkowski at halftime after Carter threw for just 22 yards — only to watch Sitkowski throw for 19 in 11 attempts. It could be another long year in Piscataway.
POLL IMPLICATIONS
Iowa could move up a few spots after thoroughly dominating a conference opponent.
UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes travel to face rival Iowa State next week.
Rutgers has a bye next week. The Scarlet Knights host Boston College on Sept. 21.

Quick start not enough for Trojans against Creston

Sports

September 7th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team got off to a rousing start against Creston on Friday night with two early big plays to lead 13-0. That lead wouldn’t hold up as the Panthers scored 35 unanswered the rest of the way to win 35-13. Creston senior quarterback Eli Loudon threw for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran for another score, leading the Panthers to a 2-0 start to the season.

Atlantic started the game hot on two big plays by senior running back Tyler Moen. Moen intercepted a Loudon pass on the Panthers first offensive possession and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The Trojan defense then forced a turnover on downs to give Atlantic the ball back on their own 22. Moen then ripped off a 78 yard touchdown run on the first offensive play after the turnover and gave Atlantic the early 13-0 lead. It didn’t take long for Creston to answer. Two plays later Creston tailback Rylan Luther went 80 yards for a score. The Panthers then intercepted Trojans quarterback Garrett McLaren and then took a shot down field at the end of the first quarter. That shot paid off, with a 76 yard scoring strike from Loudon to Cael Kralik. That tied the game and the Panthers kept the momentum up until half. Loudon hooked up with Derek Paup for a 23-yard score on a 7 play drive. Then the Panthers got a great catch from Luke Latham near the goal-line at the end of the half to set up a Loudon 1 yard scoring plunge. The Panthers tacked on one more score on the first drive of the second half to provide the final margin.

Atlantic had three drives in the second half to the Creston 20 or closer,  but couldn’t come away with points. Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott said the red zone execution is something they will have to work on.

Atlantic showed flashes of good play on both sides of the ball, but just couldn’t do anything with consistency throughout the game.Coach McDermott said that will be a focus in practice this week.

Creston improves to 2-0 on the young season and will face another strong test with a road trip to Carlisle next week. Atlantic falls to 1-1 and they will travel to face Clarinda next Friday night. We’ll have that game for the Trojans next week on KJAN.

Frazier, Bell help rally Pirates past Cardinals 9-4

Sports

September 7th, 2019 by admin

PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis’ bullpen is a big reason why it leads the NL Central.

It just didn’t work so well Friday night.

Adam Frazier capped Pittsburgh’s six-run seventh inning with a two-run triple, and the Pirates rallied for a 9-4 victory over the Cardinals.

St. Louis relievers were tagged for eight runs in three innings. Their 3.64 ERA coming into the game was the second-best mark in the major leagues.

“We couldn’t bring this one home,” manager Mike Shildt said.

Last-place Pittsburgh scored each of its runs in the seventh with two outs. Josh Bell hit a two-run single off Andrew Miller. After run-scoring hits by pinch hitter Melky Cabrera and José Osuna, Frazier made it 7-4 when he tripled high off the 21-foot wall in right field.

“One at a time, guys put together good at-bats,” Frazier said. “It was pretty impressive by everybody.”

The Cardinals had won six of eight. They maintained a 2½-game advantage in the division over the Chicago Cubs, who lost 7-1 at Milwaukee.

Miller (4-5) got just one out and was charged with three runs and three hits.

“It stinks losing any game, but especially these ones late in the season because they are so important,” Miller said. “You like to find a way to get it done. It was a pretty bad inning for us. Some balls fall. You don’t get a call here. You don’t get a call there. It’s baseball. It happens sometimes. We’ll all to go to sleep and come back and try to do a better job tomorrow.”

Tommy Edman went deep twice for St. Louis in the rookie’s first career multihomer game. Miles Mikolas struck out seven while pitching five innings of one-run ball.

Pittsburgh won for the sixth time in eight games.

Felipe Vazquez got four outs for his 25th save in 28 opportunities. He struck out Edman with runners on second and third to end the eighth inning.

Starling Marte tacked on a two-run single in the bottom half, breaking it open for the Pirates.

“Just love the finish,” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. “Love the battle the whole game. And then five straight hits. A lot of fun to watch our guys.”

Wei-Chung Wang (3-0) got the last two outs of the seventh for his second win in three days.

Fill-in starter Alex McRae allowed two runs and three hits in five innings for Pittsburgh. He replaced Joe Musgrove, who was scratched because of right foot discomfort.

It was the second major league start for McRae, and both have come on short notice. He was called up to pitch July 29 at Cincinnati hours after Jordan Lyles was traded to Milwaukee.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: RHP Adam Wainwright (10-9, 4.30 ERA) will start Saturday night. He is 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA in his last five starts.

Pirates: LHP Steven Brault (4-3, 3.88 ERA) won his previous start last Sunday at Colorado, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings and hitting his first career home run.
