Backfield clarity only place Chiefs edge Steelers

Sports

November 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — In a season during which very little has gone right for the Kansas City Chiefs this season, running back Jamaal Charles is the exception. A year removed from a knee injury that limited him to just two games, Charles is ninth in the NFL in rushing and perhaps the only reliable weapon the struggling Chiefs (1-7) have on offense heading into Monday night’s game against surging Pittsburgh.

The Steelers (5-3) have few problems at the moment, but clarity in the backfield is one of them. Pittsburgh’s running game is humming and backups Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer have both rushed for over 100 yards in a game while subbing for injured starter Rashard Mendenhall.

The reserves are playing so well, coach Mike Tomlin is making no promises that Mendenhall will get his job back whenever he returns from a strained right Achilles tendon.

November 11th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Flood recovery, appropriate prioritization of flood control in river management and water allocation are the top items on the agenda for the State Interagency Missouri River Authority’s Nov. 14th meeting in Council Bluffs. The Iowa DNR says the group will get an update on the continuing dry conditions, and in a related matter, will discuss two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ reports.

One report provides a five-year plan for managing surplus water in the Missouri River system of reservoirs. The other is a report on the corps’ start-up efforts to change the permanent allocation of Missouri River water for municipal and industrial use. Also on the agenda are updates from the state hydrology work group, the sediment management meeting, the county official coalition and a committee working on the Missouri River Recovery. MidAmerican Energy will discuss its perspective on operation of the river.

The Missouri River Authority is an interagency, interstate group that makes recommendations on policies affecting the Missouri River. The group will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Iowa School for the Deaf, Lied Multipurpose Complex, 3501 Harry Langdon Boulevard, Council Bluffs. The meeting is open to the public.

Interested persons can attend the meeting on a conference call by dialing 866-685-1580. Then they should follow the prompts, typing in the conference code of 4510673319 followed by the pound (#) sign.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Paul Griggs drilled a 46-yard field goal as time expired and Purdue stunned Iowa 27-24 Saturday, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Robert Marve threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns for the Boilermakers (4-6, 1-5 Big Ten), who won for the first time in Iowa City in 20 years.

Purdue led 24-14 before Iowa (4-6, 2-4) rallied to tie the game with 3:32 left. But the Boilermakers stuffed the Hawkeyes on fourth down at the Purdue 35-yard line, and then drove 37 yards to set up the game-winning kick by Griggs.

James Vandenberg had 190 yards passing and a TD for Iowa, which has lost four straight for the first time since 2007.
