JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) – Gambling will shift from the Missouri River to a Council Bluffs hotel under a plan approved by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The Des Moines Register reports the commission backed the plan Thursday at a meeting in Johnston.  The new casino will move from a riverboat to the first floor of Harrah’s Hotel, replacing a convention center. It will have 600 slot machines and 20 casino tables. The boat will be put up for sale.

The commission also approved an $8.5 million expansion at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in the Des Moines suburb of Altoona.

Cyclones seek to get bowl eligible against Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Paul Rhoads ticked off in his head, one by one, the number of questions it took this week before someone finally asked him about his Cyclones winning their sixth game. “That’s not bad. I thought it would take two,” the Iowa State coach said with a smile.

The Cyclones (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) haven’t been to a postseason game in back-to-back years since the 2005-06 seasons, when they went under former coach Dan McCarney. The program has only been to 11 in its meager history, including the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers last December.

Iowa State can become eligible by beating Kansas on Saturday or West Virginia in its finale.

Chiefs’ draft history big reason for 1-8 record

Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli has often said free agency is a flawed way to build a team, where players available are often overpriced or on the downward side of their careers. Sure, it’s always necessary to sign a few guys to plug holes, but Pioli would much rather draft the right guys, develop them from within the organization, and generate the kind of stability that has made franchises such as the Pittsburgh Steelers the model of NFL success.

Problems arise when you don’t draft the right guys, though. The result can be a 1-8 record.

Chiefs OL Jon Asamoah has surgery on thumb

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs offensive lineman Jon Asamoah will miss Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals after surgery on one of his thumbs. Wide receiver Jon Baldwin has not been cleared following a head injury sustained in last week’s game against Pittsburgh and is unlikely to be available. Tight end Jake O’Connell is also expected to miss the game with an ankle injury.

The Chiefs have been ravaged by injuries this season. Center Rodney Hudson, tight end Kevin Boss and defensive end Glenn Dorsey are all on injured reserve. Quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn have both sustained concussions.

Russ Hochstein is likely to start in place of Asamoah on the line. Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster would help fill the void left by Baldwin.

Hundreds of flags lined the streets of Shenandoah for his funeral on Thursday while the community honored Buttry and supported his family. Buttry was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. He was deployed to Afghanistan in August. He was one of Don and Pam Buttry’s 14 children.

Among the mourners were Darian Slater and Ashley Hummel, students in nearby Sidney. One of their teacher’s is Buttry’s older brother. The girls say it’s important to show the family they care and “honor the sacrifice” that Brandon made.
