Police: 2 stole life-sized cutout of Mahomes, then had wreck

Sports

September 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Two suspects are being penalized after they allegedly stole a life-sized cutout of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, then had a wreck as they fled.
Lawrence police spokesman Patrick Compton says a man and woman grabbed the cutout at a McDonald’s restaurant Monday, ran out the door, then jumped into a car and sped away.

Officers investigating a two-car accident nearby saw the cutout in one of the vehicles. Compton said the vehicle also matched the description of the car that drove away from the McDonald’s.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports the two were issued notices to appear for theft and were cited in the accident. One person was treated for minor injuries.

The cutout of the popular Chiefs quarterback wasn’t damaged and is back on display at the McDonald’s.

Meetings set to discuss waterfowl season, zone structure for 2021-2025

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has scheduled five meetings across the state in October to present its proposed waterfowl season and zone structure for the 2021-2025 waterfowl hunting seasons. Staff will present information including the results from the statewide hunter survey, the federal rules and guidelines that govern waterfowl hunting and the proposed season and zone structure. All meetings are scheduled from 6-8 p.m.  in Southwest Iowa, the meeting will be held Oct. 14, at the Three Mile Lake Lodge, near Afton.

Feedback collected at these meetings will be reviewed before an official proposal is submitted to the Natural Resource Commission for consideration. If approved, the rule would have an open comment period before going in front of the commission again for a final vote. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows states to make changes to their waterfowl zones and boundaries once every five years. Any changes will be reflected in the 2021-2025 waterfowl seasons.

Any person attending the public meeting and has special requirements such as those related to mobility or hearing impairments should contact the DNR or ADA Coordinator at 515-725-8200, Relay Iowa TTY Service 800-735-7942, or Webmaster@dnr.iowa.gov, and advise of specific needs.

UI and ISU athletics directors issue joint statement about marching band safety

News, Sports

September 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa and Iowa State athletics departments have issued a joint statement about “rude, vulgar and, in some cases, violent behavior” directed at the Hawkeye and Cyclone marching bands during their rivalry games.

The statement indicated both the Hawkeye and Cyclone marching bands “have been the target of unacceptable behavior at football games” in Ames and Iowa City in recent years. The athletic directors said everyone should be embarrassed when students in the bands don’t feel safe when performing at an away game. The athletics directors said fans are “a significant part of the solution” by providing a “safe stage” for both bands inside the stadiums and showing respect to the musicians.

On Monday, University of Iowa athletics director Gary Barta issued a written statement about “inappropriate actions” toward band members and staff during Saturday’s Iowa-Iowa State football game in Ames, indicating an investigation was underway.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mark Canha hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning and the Oakland Athletics edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 to hold their lead atop the AL wild-card race. The Athletics, who have won seven of eight, began the day two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot. Cleveland was a half-game behind the Rays. Starters Homer Bailey of the A’s and Danny Duffy of the Royals each pitched seven sharp innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher is headed to Philadelphia to have surgery on his injured groin, leaving the Kansas City Chiefs without their blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes for the foreseeable future. Fisher hurt his groin in practice Friday but tried to play Sunday in Oakland. He only lasted a few plays before Cam Erving replaced him, and Fisher underwent additional testing when he returned to Kansas City.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright put on another sharp performance while outpitching Max Scherzer, right fielder Dexter Fowler made a sensational catch and the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 5-1. Wainwright has won all four of his starts this month, allowing just one earned run in 27 innings. Trailing by four, the Nationals put two on in the eighth. Asdrúbal Cabrera hit a drive that had the distance to leave the park, but Fowler reached far over the wall to make the grab.

UNDATED (AP) — St. Louis had better dig in for its repeat bid. The defending Stanley Cup champion Blues will have their hands full in the Western Conference, which seems to have a slew of contenders. Dallas, Vegas, Calgary, Colorado, San Jose and Winnipeg all go into the season with a shot to knock off St. Louis. It’s not wise to count Nashville out in the race, especially with the addition of center Matt Duchene.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 11 Michigan at No. 13 Wisconsin are coming off open dates heading into a matchup that should provide some clarity about how good they really are. Michigan’s new spread offense has been unable to gain traction because of turnovers and penalties. The Badgers have outscored two overmatched opponents 111-0. Nebraska’s defense will be tested by Illinois running back Reggie Corbin. Northwestern is an underdog at home against a Michigan State still smarting from its quirky loss to Arizona State.
