Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Carpenter homered in the 10th inning against Craig Kimbrel in the All-Star closer’s return, and the St. Louis Cardinals regrouped after blowing a late lead to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4. Emerging ace Jack Flaherty shut down Chicago over eight innings, and despite a three-run ninth inning, the Cubs dropped a game behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild card and four games behind St. Louis for first place in the NL Central.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Cruz hit two of Minnesota’s four home runs and matched his season high with five RBIs, igniting another impressive power display by the first-place Twins during an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals to keep their American League Central lead at four games. They have nine games to go. Miguel Sanó homered and hit the tiebreaking RBI double in the fifth following the ejection of Royals starter Mike Montgomery, who started that inning by giving up a home run to Mitch Garver.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs were in the mix to acquire Minkah Fitzpatrick. There have been rumors swirling about Jalen Ramsey. Patrick Peterson remains a popular topic. And while everyone wonders whether cornerback help will arrive in Kansas City, the Ravens and red-hot Lamar Jackson are coming to town for a big matchup this Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Two of the NFL’s exciting young quarterbacks, and their high-flying offenses, will meet on Sunday when Lamar Jackson and the Ravens visit Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Much of the attention this offseason was focused on Kansas City, where the team’s young QB was coming off a record-setting MVP season. But Jackson has been just as good through two games this season, and both teams are 2-0 heading into Arrowhead Stadium.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Two suspects are being penalized after they allegedly stole a life-sized cutout of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, then had a wreck as they fled. Lawrence police spokesman Patrick Compton says a man and woman grabbed the cutout at a McDonald’s restaurant Monday, ran out of the store, jumped into a car and sped away before being involved in the wreck. Officers investigating the two-car accident saw the cutout in one of the vehicles. The two were issued notices to appear for theft.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — West Virginia, Kansas State and Kansas were supposed to occupy the Big 12 basement this season. Big wins last weekend over fellow Power Five schools stirred up some much-needed optimism in Morgantown, Manhattan and Lawrence with Big 12 play on the horizon.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — The Big Ten Conference knows the value of having good punters, and it is willing to go a long way to get them. The league has four of the nation’s top 23 punters going into this weekend’s games. They include Michael Sleep-Dalton of Iowa, Adam Korsak of Rutgers, Isaac Armstrong of Nebraska and Blake Hayes of Illinois.

Griswold travels to Sidney for district contest on KJAN

Sports

September 19th, 2019 by admin

The Griswold Tigers (0-4, 0-1) will travel to face the Sidney Cowboys (1-2) in an 8-Man District 7 football contest on Friday night and we’ll have the game on KJAN. The Tigers will be searching for their first win of the season and are coming off a district loss to East Mills last week. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett said they have seen some good things from the team and injuries have made the last couple of outings difficult. One guy the Tigers have leaned on is senior quarterback Derek Mueller and Coach Everett has been impressed by his leadership.

The Sidney Cowboys have spread the ball around to multiple backs this season and Coach Everett expects the same tough run game they always expect out of the Cowboys.

Sidney Head Coach Donnie Sears said they have been impressed by the number of guys that have stepped up to help the offense on different nights. He said with multiple guys capable the coaching staff just has to search for the hot hand.

Sears knows the Tigers are similar with a run first mentality but he knows his defenders will need to be ready for misdirection.

The Tigers and Cowboys are set for a 7:00pm kickoff in Sidney. Chris Parks and Jim Field will have the call with the Dvorak Tire and Service pregame starting at 6:30pm. You can catch the game on-air, online, or watch the game on KJANTV. Catch our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm and stay tuned after the game for all the scores around the state on the Iowa High School Scoreboard show from 10:00pm-11:30pm.

Atlantic football gears up for home tilt against Harlan

Sports

September 19th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (1-2) football team is gearing up for a non-district tilt against the Harlan Cyclones (2-1) at the Trojan Bowl on Friday night. The Trojans are looking to put a complete game together after struggling in portions of the past two games, losses to Creston and Clarinda. A number of mental errors and turnovers doomed the Trojans last week against the Cardinals and Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said they have been working on limiting those mistakes this week in practice. For the third straight week the Trojans will face a quarterback that is having a strong season. Harlan’s Johnathan Monson has thrown for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns, he’s also rushed for 209 yards and 5 more scores. Coach McDermott said slowing him down will certainly be a key.

Atlantic hasn’t had consistent play at the line of scrimmage so far this season and Coach McDermott said matching the Cyclones physicality will be important.

Atlantic has been able to hit on some big plays this season on offense but sustaining drives has been a struggle at times. Coach McDermott thinks part of that improvement will come as their young quarterback Garrett McLaren improves. You can hear the full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm Friday on KJAN.

The Trojans and Cyclones are set to tee it up at the Trojan Bowl at 7:00pm.
