Molina, DeJong homer off Kimbrel, Cards beat Cubs 9-8

Sports

September 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong homered on Craig Kimbrel’s first two pitches in the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals handed the reeling Chicago Cubs their fifth straight loss with a wild 9-8 victory on Saturday.

Marcell Ozuna also connected as the NL Central-leading Cardinals (88-67) won for the fifth time in six games. Dexter Fowler had two hits and two RBIs, and Paul Goldschmidt also drove in two runs. Chicago (82-73) used pinch-hit homers by Ian Happ and Tony Kemp and a solo drive by rookie Nico Hoerner to carry an 8-7 lead into the ninth. It looked as if it was on its way to stopping a costly slide that pushed it out of playoff position — the Cubs began the day two games back of Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.
But Kimbrel (0-4) was hit hard again in his first appearance since he gave up Matt Carpenter’s 10th-inning homer in the Cubs’ 5-4 loss Thursday night.

Molina jumped on Kimbrel’s first pitch for his ninth homer, touching off a rollicking celebration in the Cardinals’ dugout. Kimbrel looked stunned as the ball soared into the bleachers in left-center.
DeJong then belted an even deeper drive for his 28th homer, sending the party on the Cardinals’ half of the field to another level. Signed in early June, Kimbrel has allowed a career-high nine home runs in only 20 2/3 innings this year, and has blown three of 16 save chances. He permitted seven home runs last season in 62 1/3 innings with Boston.

John Gant (11-1) got the last out of the eighth for the win, and Carlos Martínez finished for his 23rd save. It’s the first three-game win streak for St. Louis at Wrigley Field since June 20-22, 2016.

NEARING THE END
The Cubs paid tribute to longtime broadcast partner WGN-TV with a pregame video. One member of WGN’s crew for Cubs games threw out a ceremonial first pitch, surrounded by some of his veteran colleagues. The Cubs will show their games on their own regional sports network beginning next year, ending their run on WGN after 72 seasons.

TRAINER’S ROOM
Cardinals: 2B Kolten Wong (strained left hamstring) was out of the starting lineup for the second straight game. “The good news is he’s feeling good, he’s moving around,” manager Mike Shildt said. “We’re just going to take it day by day. Encouraging, but no timetable at all.” Wong got hurt during Thursday’s 10-inning win over Chicago.

UP NEXT
Yu Darvish (6-7, 4.02 ERA) pitches for Chicago in what might be the final game of the year at Wrigley. The Japanese right-hander has 34 strikeouts in 18 innings over three September starts. Miles Mikolas (9-14, 4.29 ERA) goes for his 10th win for St. Louis.

Purdy scores 6 TDs, Iowa State throttles ULM 72-20

Sports

September 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State desperately needed a spark after barely beating Northern Iowa and losing a heartbreaker to rival Iowa. Sophomore Brock Purdy gave the Cyclones the jolt they were looking for with one of the best individual performances in school history.

Purdy threw for a career-high 435 yards and tied a school record with six touchdowns and Iowa State throttled Louisiana-Monroe 72-20 on Saturday, its best scoring output in 113 years. “Our offense clicked, the receivers were great, offensive line did amazing,” Purdy said. “It just happened. It’s not something I go into the game thinking (about) records. As long as we’re winning, I’m totally fine.”

Purdy tossed three touchdown passes and ran for 75 yards and three TDs for the Cyclones (2-1), becoming the first player in school history to surpass 500 yards of total offense. Purdy wasn’t the only once piling it on against a ULM team that took Florida State to overtime in its opener.

Iowa State finished with a school-best 714 yards and scored its most points since beating Cornell 81-0 in 1906 — the same year the forward pass became legal. Purdy and the Cyclones broke free in the second half, pushing a 14-point halftime lead to 48-20 with three touchdowns in the third quarter.

Purdy ran it in from 13 yards out, found Deshaunte Jones for an 84-yard TD connection and hit Sean Shaw from 12 yards out to make it a 28-point game with 19 seconds left in the third. Purdy racked up 510 total yards despite sitting out the fourth quarter. Tarique Milton had 142 yards receiving for the Cyclones, and Jones had 100 on just two grabs.

Caleb Evans threw for 176 yards and two TDs and ran for 93 yards for ULM (1-2). The Warhawks allowed 45 points in the second half, the same total it gave up in four quarters and overtime against the Seminoles.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa State: Entering play, Iowa State’s 15 points a game in regulation would’ve ranked 125th out of 130 FBS schools. The Cyclones snapped out of their funk with authority, as Purdy found both opened and seemingly covered receivers with ease. Iowa State’s defense didn’t have a great day, but for once the offense picked it up.

Molina, Cardinals hold off fading Cubs again, 2-1

Sports

September 21st, 2019 by admin

CHICAGO (AP) — Yadier Molina and the St. Louis Cardinals are taking charge of the NL Central by grinding out tough, ugly wins.

And bouncing back after absorbing some unpleasant blows.

Molina overcame a painful foul tip to get three of St. Louis’ four hits, including a two-run single, and the Cardinals held off the fading Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Friday.

“We’re playing good baseball right now,” Molina said. “We can get a little better doing the little things, but we’re winning games. That’s all that matters right now.”

Carlos Martínez got the final two outs a day after a brutal blown save, and the Cardinals maintained a three-game NL Central lead over Milwaukee while opening a five-game margin over Chicago. The Cubs dropped two games behind the Brewers for the second NL wild card with eight games left.

Chicago has totaled nine runs while losing four straight games. The Cardinals have won the first two games of this key four-game set, and they’ll play the Cubs five more times over their final eight games.

The Cubs scored their run following a St. Louis error in the second inning, and the Cardinals rallied in the sixth.

David Phelps (2-1), the second of eight Cubs relievers, walked Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna to start the inning. Steve Cishek took over and walked Matt Carpenter to load the bases before Molina grounded a 2-2 pitch up the middle.

“I pride myself on being able to command the baseball,” Phelps said. “Going out and doing that is embarrassing.”

Molina came through after being hit in the groin by Jason Heyward’s foul tip in the fourth inning. The veteran catcher stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes to regroup.

“When you get hit … it’s going to take a while,” Molina said. “So I just wanted to be part of this game. I just want to be there for the team.”

Last year, Molina needed surgery and missed a month following a similar foul tip.

“That’s the toughest, smartest guy I may ever know,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said.

It was another narrow victory for St. Louis. The Cardinals won 5-4 in 10 innings Thursday night when Carpenter homered off All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel. Chicago had rallied with three runs in the ninth against Martínez and Andrew Miller.

Miller pitched the eighth inning Friday and got the first out in the ninth before Shildt went to Martínez. The right-hander got a popup, walked pinch-hitter Tony Kemp and then got Ben Zobrist to ground out to complete his 22nd save.

Shildt had no qualms about letting Martínez finish this one.

“No question about it,” Shildt said. “He came in the clubhouse and said, ‘I got two (innings) in me today.'”

Michael Wacha pitched four innings of one-run ball for St. Louis, and five relievers shut down Chicago after that. Ryan Helsley (2-0) pitched a scoreless fifth for the win.

The Cardinals left 12 on base. Chicago stranded nine runners and hit into three double plays.

Manager Joe Maddon and his players have no explanation for the team’s slump, which comes on the heels of a five-game winning streak when the Cubs outscored opponents 59-18.

“We have to somehow get more consistent offensively,” Maddon said. “When the opportunities come up, we have to take advantage of them. We’ve had some good at-bats.”

Chicago went up 1-0 after Kyle Schwarber doubled in the second and scored from third when second baseman Tommy Edman bobbled David Bote’s grounder. Bote was awarded an RBI because it was ruled that Schwarber would have scored regardless.

Alec Mills pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings for the Cubs, but the bullpen issued seven walks and couldn’t hold the 1-0 lead. Mills allowed two hits and struck out six.

UP NEXT

Cardinals RHP Dakota Hudson (16-7, 3.35) takes the mound against Cubs LHP Jose Quintana (13-8, 3.35) on Saturday. Hudson is 6-1 in his last seven starts with a 1.59 ERA. Quintana has an 11.32 ERA in his last three starts and has failed to get past the third inning in his last two.

Sidney runs past Griswold 76-46

Sports

September 20th, 2019 by admin

The Sidney Cowboys used an impressive ground game and efficient passing game to top the Griswold Tigers 76-46 on Friday night. Griswold turned the ball over on their first two possessions of the night and the Cowboys built an early 16-0 lead. The Tigers finished the night with 4 turnovers and the Cowboys efficient offense took advantage of those mistakes.

Tyler Hensley led the charge for the Cowboys homecoming win with 4 rushing touchdowns and 1 touchdown catch. Hensley scored the first three touchdowns of the game on the ground.

Griswold climbed within one score on a couple of occasions in the first half but Sidney was able to build a 46-22 lead by halftime and built on that lead in the second half.

Derek Mueller led the Tigers with 2 touchdown runs and had a late kickoff return touchdown as well. The Tigers fall to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in District 7 play. The Tigers travel to face Fremont-Mills next week.

Sidney moves to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in 8-Man District 7. Sidney hosts Bedford next week.

Iowa forward arrested for suspected drunken driving

Sports

September 20th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa forward Cordell Pemsl has been arrested for suspected drunken driving and suspended from the team. The Hawkeyes say in news release that the team suspended Pemsl indefinitely following his arrest early Friday on a driving under the influence charge. Iowa City authorities say in a court filing that the 22-year-old, 6-foot-9 Pemsl had bloodshot eyes, failed a field sobriety test and registered a blood alcohol content of .151 on a breath test when he was pulled over at around 3 a.m. The legal limit to drive is .08.

Pemsl, of Dubuque, has played in 67 career games, averaging 7.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He missed much of last season following knee surgery. A public defender has been appointed to represent Pemsl.

IHSAA announces 2019 Football Hall of Fame inductions

Sports

September 20th, 2019 by admin

The IHSAA is proud to announce the 2019 class for induction into its Football Hall of Fame, with the six selections to be honored on November 22 during the Class 4A championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. These honorees were nominated through their schools, picked by the Football Hall of Fame selection committee, and approved by the Board of Control.

KEVIN BRADDOCK – West Branch – A key contributor on two Class 1A title teams with the Bears, Braddock starred in his senior season of 1991 by earning elite all-state honors as a running back and claiming three championship game records that still stand. Braddock had 311 rushing yards – an all-class title game record – with five total touchdowns, including a 91-yard rushing score, in that 42-13 win over West Bend-Mallard. That capped an unbeaten 1991 season and he became walk-on at the University of Iowa in 1992.

ED DONOVAN – Solon – A four-year starter and Spartan legend, Donovan shined in 1971 and 1972 before becoming a starter at the University of Iowa. A running back for his final two varsity seasons, Donovan scored 36 total touchdowns in the eight-game 1972 campaign, the first year of the IHSAA playoffs. Donovan held numerous Solon records, scoring 36 points in a single game and even scoring four touchdowns in four different ways – rushing, kickoff return, punt return, interception return – in one game.

MATT KROUL – Mount Vernon – A three-time all-state and all-conference pick at linebacker, Kroul was a feared hitter who also rushed for more than 1,000 yards in his senior season of 2003. Mount Vernon played in the UNI-Dome in his three standout seasons, including back-to-back appearances in the Class 3A title game in 2002 and 2003. Kroul then went on to start a record 50 consecutive games at the University of Iowa as a defensive lineman.

TYLER SASH – Oskaloosa – Sash was a two-time all-state selection at Oskaloosa before eventually continuing his football career at the University of Iowa and winning a Super Bowl in the NFL with the New York Giants. In his senior season, Sash scored touchdowns passing, rushing, receiving, and via kickoff return and punt return, and was responsible for nearly 60 percent of his team’s total offense, including 1,173 yards and 20 touchdowns rushing in nine games.

PARKER WILDEMAN – Cherokee, Washington – The physical all-state defensive lineman and state heavyweight wrestling champion led Cherokee to the Class 3A quarterfinals in his senior season of 1989. It was just the program’s second ever trip to the postseason, with Wildeman using that Siouxland success as a springboard for an All-Big Ten run at the University of Iowa and eventually into coaching.

JOE WOODLEY – Valley, West Des Moines – Woodley was a two-time all-state linebacker whose toughness and two-way skills helped set the tone early in Valley’s now-record 27 straight playoff appearances. A standout player and eventual coach from an impressive family coaching tree, Woodley was named CIML player of the year in 1998 and went on to become a team captain and play in three bowl games at Iowa State University.
