Iowa wrestlers crush Iowa State 32-3

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The fourth-ranked Iowa wrestling team won nine of 10 matches and routed rival Iowa State 32-3, winning its ninth straight dual meet over the Cyclones. Top-ranked Matt McDonough and Derek Saint John cruised to easy decisions for the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes (6-0), who improved to 61-16-2 against Iowa State (0-2).

Mike Evans and Ethen Lofthouse posted early wins for Iowa. The Hawkeyes led 14-3 at intermission and finished off one of the more lopsided meets in the history of the rivalry — one of the biggest in collegiate Olympic sports. Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson was the only Cyclones wrestler to win a match as Iowa State fell to 0-7 against Iowa coach Tom Brands.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad’s administration has proposed freezing wages and increasing health care costs for 20,000 state workers in negotiations with state employee unions. But Danny Homan, president of the state workers’ union, scoffed at the proposal and says Branstad is out to score political points.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Democrat who lost an Iowa House seat by just 22 votes on Election Day has called off a recount of the votes she had earlier sought. Susan Judkins of Clive called off the recount Friday in the Iowa House District 43 race in suburban Des Moines. That leaves Republican incumbent Chris Hagenow as the winner. House District 43 includes the city of Windsor Heights as well as portions of Clive and West Des Moines.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City landlord accused of peeping at tenants in their showers has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of invasion of privacy. Sixty-three-year-old Elwyn Miller pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday. Miller was arrested October 31st when police were called to one of his rental properties by a woman who told police that Miller been watching her through a peephole in her shower.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar County health officials are stepping up flu surveillance since a child there was diagnosed with a flu virus normally found in pigs. The H3N2v influenza A strain was verified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dense Fog Advisory Until 9-a.m. Sunday (12/2/12)

The National Weather Service has issued a DENSE FOG ADVISORY for most of Iowa, and the entire KJAN listening area. The Advisory is in effect until 9-a.m.

VISIBILITY: VISIBILITIES OF A QUARTER MILE OR LESS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH MID MORNING. LOW LYING AREAS NEAR CREEKS AND RIVERS ARE LIKELY TO HAVE THE MOST DENSE FOG.

IMPACTS: HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS CAN BE EXPECTED DUE TO THE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED VISIBILITIES. EXTRA TIME SHOULD BE GIVEN FOR EARLY SUNDAY MORNING TRAVEL.

1 injured during single vehicle accident in Shelby County Saturday evening

One person was sent to the hospital following a single-vehicle accident Saturday evening south of Elk Horn, in Shelby County. The Iowa State Patrol says 56-year old Janet Snyder, of Elk Horn, was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic by Elk Horn Rescue, following the accident which happened at around 5:15-p.m on Highway 173, just north of Interstate 80. The Patrol says according to witnesses, Snyder’s 2002 Ford Explorer left the road slowly just past a residence at 146 State Highway 173 and continued well into a corn field before coming to rest. Officials say it appears the accident occurred when Snyder suffered from some sort of medical condition.

Iowa State thumps BYU 83-62

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Will Clyburn scored a career-high 32 points and Iowa State snapped a two-game losing streak by beating BYU 83-62.  Melvin Ejim added 13 points for the Cyclones (5-2), who shot 48 percent from the floor in a surprisingly easy victory over the Cougars.

Iowa State took control with a 12-0 run spanning the halves. The Cyclones jumped ahead by as much as 58-41 early in the second half and cruised to their 12th straight home win dating back to last season.

Brandon Davies had 20 points to lead BYU (5-3), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. The Cougars hit just four 3s in 20 tries.

Police ID woman killed in Chiefs murder-suicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Police have identified the girlfriend of a Kansas City Chiefs player killed in a murder-suicide as 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins. Police spokesman Darin Snapp says linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot Perkins on Saturday. He then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend had been arguing recently. The two of them have a 3-month-old child. Snapp says Belcher’s mother recently had moved in with the couple, possibly to help with the baby. She called police just before 8 a.m. to report Perkins had been shot multiple times. Perkins was transported to a hospital, where she died a short time later.

Iowa steamrolls Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 88-59

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Melsahn Basabe scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half as Iowa throttled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 88-59 on Saturday. Devyn Marble added 15 points for the Hawkeyes (6-2), who never trailed and used a 20-0 run in the first half to bounce back from two straight losses. Joy Williamson scored 14 points to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-5).

Basabe came off the bench to spark Iowa’s big first-half rally. The junior scored the final 13 points of the 20-0 run during a seven-minute stretch of the half. Basabe made 5 of 6 field goals and 7 of 8 free throws for the game. Iowa freshman Adam Woodbury added 13 points and five rebounds. Josh Oglesby scored 12 points.

Cedar County child diagnosed with swine flu

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar County health officials are stepping up flu surveillance since a child there was diagnosed with a flu virus normally found in pigs. Cedar Rapids television station KCRG-TV reports that the H3N2v influenza A strain was verified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. State epidemiologist Dr. Patricia Quinlisk says the child, who has since recovered, had not been in contact with swine, one of the modes of transmission.

Quinlisk says health professionals in the Cedar County area are being asked to take more specimens for testing from people who might have the flu. Quinlisk says three Iowa children had the same strain in November 2011. All recovered.

(Updated): KC Chief Football Player kills himself at Arrowhead Stadium

(Updated 10:22-a.m.) KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Police say a 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs player was involved in two shootings Saturday, one of which occurred in the parking lot near Arrowhead Stadium.  Kansas City police Supervisor Andrea Khan could not release the name of the player involved. The condition of the two parties was not immediately known.

Khan said the first shooting happened in a Kansas City, Mo., neighborhood and the second happened at Arrowhead Stadium, about five miles away, at about 8 a.m. Saturday. The Chiefs issued a statement saying, “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
