Services held for western Iowa train crash victim

News

January 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A Harrison County teen who was critically injured last October when the vehicle he was driving was hit by a train, died from his injuries, and was buried last Friday. According to the Council Bluffs NonPareil, services were held Friday for 16-year old Jason Hoffman, of Dunlap.

The Iowa State Patrol said Hoffman was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 southeast on Remsen Street the morning of October 4th, when he failed to yield to a westbound train at the Canadian Northern railroad track, in the Dunlap City limits. The collision forced the pickup into the southwest ditch. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Lincoln, NE., on December 30th.

Hoffman was a sophomore at Boyer Valley High School. He was active in football, basketball and track.

Cyclones prepare for next level

Several Iowa State football players saw their college season come to an end in the New Year’s Eve bowl game loss to Tulsa, but several are likely to continue their football careers at the next level. Defensive lineman, Jake McDonough of Urbandale overcame injuries to play at I-S-U, and now is looking forward to the next step.  “I will be training from here on out, and then I’ll have an internship to finish out my college career. I’ll graduate in May, and then hopefully I can pursue my career in the N-F-L,” McDonough says.

Jake Knott had to watch the last part of his senior season from the sidelines after an injury, but is happy the way it turned out overall. “First of all I’ve just been luck to be surrounded by the people I have been, the coaching and all that. In this day and age in college football to have the same coach and head coach for four years straight is awesome and says a lot about where the program is headed,” Knott says. While Knott will now try to make it into the N-F-L, his brother is preparing to try and fill his spot on the Cyclone defense.

Knott says his brother has been playing the linebacker position since mid-season and has impressed him with what he has done. He says it will be interesting to see how his brother or anyone else who steps into the position does next season. It will be a big hole in the defense to fill, as Knott’s runningmate at linebacker, A-J Klein, is also graduating expected to be an N-F-L prospect.
