CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Redshirt freshman Will McElvain threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Weston, and Trevor Allen and Tyler Hoosman ran for scores, as Northern Iowa held off Youngstown State 21-14 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference opener between two ranked teams on Saturday. McElvain staked the Panthers (3-2), ranked 13th in the FCS Coaches poll, to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with his TD toss to Weston. McElvain directed an eight-play, 79-yard drive — ended by Allen’s 10-yard TD run — to push Northern Iowa’s lead to 14-0 with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing possession for the 17th-ranked Penguins (4-1), Nathan Mays needed just one play — a 75-yard scoring strike to Jermiah Braswell — to halve the lead at 14-7. But the Panthers took the kickoff and marched 75 yards, with Hoosman running it in from the 15-yard line for a 21-7 halftime lead. The only scoring in the second half came on Youngstown State’s opening drive of the third quarter. Mays completed all four of his passes in an eight-play, 75-yard drive, accounting for 56 yards with the last 14 coming on a scoring toss to Kendric Mallory that pulled the Penguins within 21-14.

McElvain finished 10-of-20 passing for 235 yards and a TD for the winners. Allen had a game-high 74 yards rushing on 16 carries. Weston had three receptions for 108 yards. Mays completed 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards and two scores for Youngstown State. The Penguins were held to 55 yards on the ground on 36 carries.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ian Corwin threw two touchdowns passes and Drake held Valparaiso to just 131 yards of offense in a 35-6 victory on Saturday. After a scoreless first quarter, Corwin directed a 15-play, 64-yard drive that took 6:20 off the clock with Drew Lauer running it in from the 2-yard line for a 7-0 lead at the 13:34 mark of the second period. On the next possession for Drake (2-3, 2-0 Pioneer Football League), Corwin connected with Caden Meis for an 11-yard TD and a 14-0 lead. Meis, a freshman, finished with a career-best 12 rushes for 90 yards and a score. His TD catch was his first career reception.

Dimitrios Latsonas got the Crusaders (0-5, 0-1) on the scoreboard with a 46-yard field goal to cut their deficit to 14-3. Lauer followed with his second TD run, a 15-yarder that capped a six-play, 47-yard drive for a 21-3 Bulldogs’ lead. Latsonas kicked a 41-yard field goal on the final play of the quarter to leave Valparaiso trailing 21-6 at halftime.

Drake put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Meis raced for a 53-yard TD on the Bulldogs’ second play of the quarter and Corwin capped the scoring with a 4-yard TD toss to Devin Cates at the 8:10 mark.
Corwin completed 13 of 20 passes for 154 yards for Drake. Lauer rushed for 77 yards and two scores on 17 carries.

Jimmy Seewald hit just 10 of 24 passes for 66 yards and two interceptions. Elias Earley had 10 carries for 52 of the Crusaders’ 65 yards on the ground.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s offensive strategy this season has been to let quarterback Brock Purdy try to make as many plays as possible. Purdy showed yet again on Saturday how effective such an approach can be, running and throwing his way past an overwhelmed TCU defense.

Purdy threw for 247 yards and a pair of TDs and Iowa State walloped the Horned Frogs 49-24 for its first Big 12 win of the season. Purdy also ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1), who beat the Horned Frogs for just the third time in 11 tries.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa State: This was the breakout game the Cyclones were searching for. Iowa State’s offensive line played its best game in recent memory and its defense largely took away Anderson, forcing the Horned Frogs to become one dimensional. “I thought we played in a really good rhythm,” Campbell said. “We were aggressive on both sides of the game early. When things got a little awkward there late in the game and we needed to make a play, we made a play.”
TCU: After a rough start, Duggan settled in and brought the Horned Frogs back into the game — albeit briefly — in his return to his home state. The upcoming bye week should only help Duggan’s progress moving forward.
LANG’S TIME
While Purdy continues to be Iowa State’s best threat running the ball, Johnnie Lang might be inching closer to becoming the Cyclones’ starting running back. Lang had 72 yards on a team-high 16 carries. “I really thought Johnnie Lang played a great game, his best game to date. That’s really exciting. He’s practicing great and he showed it on the football field,” Campbell said.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Zach Charbonnet ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give No. 19 Michigan an early double-digit lead and its defense did the rest against No. 14 Iowa, forcing four turnovers and tallying eight sacks in a 10-3 win Saturday.

The Wolverines (4-1, 2-1 Big Ten) were held scoreless over the final three quarters because they could not run or pass effectively, scoring just three points off the Hawkeyes’ turnovers. Iowa (4-1, 1-1) failed to take advantage of favorable field position on its final two drives with a chance to extend the game or possibly win it with a touchdown and 2-point conversion. The Hawkeyes turned the ball over on downs at the Michigan 44 with 37 seconds left after a penalty- and sack-filled drive forced them to punt with a fourth-and-36 at midfield on the previous possession.

Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent fumbled on his team’s first snap, giving up the ball at the Hawkeyes 18. Michigan, though, had to settle for a field goal after gaining just 6 yards. The Wolverines took a 10-0 lead on their next drive, which started with a 51-yard pass to Nico Collins and finished with Charbonnet’s 2-yard run. Iowa avoided a shutout with Keith Duncan’s 22-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

Michigan’s Shea Patterson was 14 of 26 for 147 yards with an interception. Iowa’s Nate Stanley was 23 of 42 for 260 yards with three interceptions, ending a 139-pass streak without getting picked off.

THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa: Ball security will become a priority after giving away chances to win at the Big House. The Hawkeyes threw three interceptions and lost a fumble. They entered the game with only one turnover this season, tying Oregon State for the fewest in major college football.
Michigan: Coach Jim Harbaugh hired Josh Gattis to be his offensive coordinator, giving the former Alabama assistant his first shot to call plays and run an offense. So far, it is not going well. The Wolverines failed to move the ball much after scoring 10 points in that opening quarter.

ATLANTA (AP) — Mike Foltynewicz threw seven dominating innings before pinch-hitter Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer that carried the Atlanta Braves to a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Foltynewicz, who spent a good chunk of his summer in Triple-A after a miserable start, has been a different pitcher since returning from the minors. The best-of-five series is now tied at one game apiece as it shifts to St. Louis for the next two games.

ATLANTA (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals rookie Ryan Helsley was insulted by his first exposure to the Tomahawk Chop chant by Atlanta Braves fans. Helsley, a member of the Cherokee nation, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the chant is a “misrepresentation of the Cherokee people or Native Americans in general.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will again try to bounce back from a humiliating loss. The Cornhuskers will enter their game against Northwestern off a 41-point beat-down at home by Ohio State. Second-year coach Scott Frost says the Nebraska job is not harder than he thought it would be and good things are coming. Northwestern enters the game with one of the nation’s worst offenses and will be without its leading receiver.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Each year Kansas’ basketball season kick-off, dubbed Late Night in the Phog, promises a festive night filled with musical performances, skits and scrimmages, building excitement to match the lofty expectations for the upcoming season. However, this year anticipation eagerly surrounded not only an appearance by Snoop Dogg, but also whether Kansas’ recent notice of allegations from the NCAA would dampen the mood.

CHICAGO (AP) — DePaul says former Kansas guard Charlie Moore will be eligible to play immediately after the NCAA granted a waiver. The Chicago product transferred in April, making DePaul his third school. He began his career at California and played one season at Kansas. Moore averaged 2.9 points in 35 games as a sophomore after sitting out the Jayhawks’ 2017-18 Final Four season. He scored 12.2 points per game as a freshman at California in 2016-17.

The Atlantic Trojans got off to a quick start but couldn’t sustain any momentum in a 28-7 loss at OA-BCIG Friday night.

The Trojans opened up the game getting the ball in Falcon territory when OA-BCIG fumbled the opening kickoff. The Trojans were able to take advantage and scored on an 11-yard Tyler Moen touchdown run.

The Trojans held that lead for a few possessions before Falcons quarterback Cooper DeJean got OA-BCIG on the board with a touchdown run with 3 minutes left in the half. They then use their timeouts to save clock and forced an Atlantic punt with a little over a minute left in the half. DeJean then scored on a wild back and forth run from 51-yards out with just :25 left in the half.

The momentum from that big play carried over into the second half. The Falcons went on drives of 84 and 89 yards on their first two possessions of the half. The first ended in a touchdown pass from DeJean to Jake Nieman, the second with DeJean’s third touchdown run of the game. That pushed the Falcon lead to 28-7 and would prove to be the final margin.

DeJean finished the game 20-28 passing for 259 yards and 1 score. He ran for 164 yards and three touchdowns. The Falcons outgained the Trojans 437-293. The Falcons move to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in 2A District 9. The Falcons travel to Shenandoah next week.

Atlantic was led by Tyler Moen with 186 yard and 1 touchdown. The Trojans fall to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in the district. Next up for the Trojans is a homecoming meeting with Greene County.
