Nebraska-Iowa bridge ownership going to states

DECATUR, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska and Iowa will take over ownership of the Decatur toll bridge over the Missouri River following approval by a Nebraska commission. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Nebraska State Highway Commission on Friday approved the transfer. Officials have been discussing an ownership transfer agreement since the mid-1960s. The bridge carries Nebraska Highway 51 traffic east and Iowa Highway 175 west over the Missouri River. It’s situated at Decatur, Neb., about eight miles west of Onawa, Iowa. During peak summer months, about 2,000 vehicles a day use the bridge.

The Burt County Bridge Commission owns the span, but county officials have said maintenance and repairs are too costly for the county to keep it. The transfer of ownership is expected by the end of the year.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has hired former Arkansas assistant Chris Klenakis as its new offensive line coach and assigned associate head coach Bill Bleil to work with the tight ends. Klenakis, who spent the past three seasons with the Razorbacks, was previously the offensive coordinator at Nevada. He coached San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick from 2007-09 and is well-versed in the “Pistol” style of offense, which features quarterbacks operating out of the shotgun but closer to the line of scrimmage.

Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads says Klenakis will help the Cyclones diversify and expand their offense. Klenakis has coached in Division I for 23 years, including a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Southern Mississippi.

Harkin won’t seek 6th Senate term

News

January 26th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin says he will not seek re-election in 2014. The 73-year-old Harkin tells The Associated Press in an interview, “It’s just time to step aside,” because by the time he would finish a sixth term, he would be 81. Harkin said it would also allow a new generation of Democrats to seek higher office. The announcement comes as a surprise, considering he had $2.7 million in his campaign war chest and was planning a fundraiser next month.

Harkin played a lead role in urging the Senate’s more liberal members to back the 2010 health care bill. No Iowa Republicans have taken formal steps toward seeking the seat. Harkin’s decision eases the burden on the GOP, who have to gain six seats to win the majority.
